. . . . . .

Peering out of her the ceiling-to-floor length window of her condo unit, Naomi took a careful sip of her piping hot cup of Lady Grey tea, its citrus flavour bursting in her mouth before she drew in a harsh breath.

She watched as the snow drizzled its way down from the skies, blessing her with an exquisite view of the city she currently resided in. The houses that were just a distance from her had its roofs blanketed by the falling snowflakes, painting them and their yards a bright yet gorgeous white.

She moved to draw the curtains away a little and instantly found her eyes fixated on the familiar building that stood just fifteen minutes away from where she was.

She wondered if he was up. She wondered what he was doing right now, if he was still in bed, if he was making himself a cup of coffee. . . if he was missing her as much as she was missing him.

Sure, they were only fifteen minutes away from each other but the distance between their hearts had inevitably grew and come between them since she'd muttered those five little words under her breath three nights ago.

She knew she hurt him but she knew it was for the best because it was better to hurt him now than to hurt him even more in the future. A solemn chuckle slipped past her lips before she could even stop it, and Naomi suddenly found herself drowning in whatever lies she was feeding herself, slowly sinking further and further towards the seabed.

She felt like she was sinking right into it, the dampen sand that was slowly closing in on her felt like the calm before the storm; the plushness of it serving as a sort of solace, telling her that what she was doing was right, before snatching that right out of her hands and dragging her beneath the seabed, right into a never-ending dismal chasm.

Her heart was telling her that it's the right thing to do, that shutting Chris out like this was for the best---for both of them. But her gut was telling her otherwise; that she'd done the wrong thing, that she was being unreasonable and that she wasn't even considering what Chris had to say about this.

Driving those thoughts out of her mind, Naomi took another sip of her tea before feeling a slight jab in her lower abdomen. She sucked in a deep breath, feeling the pain swirl around as her grip around her cup tightened.

Maybe her body already knew that she wasn't fit to leave the house today.

. . . . . .

"Where's Naomi?"

At the sound of his brother's question, Chris' head shot up, averting his attention from Dodger to his brother, Scott. He peered at Scott with a look of uncertainty pooling in the blue of his eyes as he tried to rack his brain for a good enough excuse to tell his family. His parents were in the kitchen but they could hear their kids loud and clear.

"She's, uh, she's not feeling too well," Chris stuttered, the slight waver in his voice making it obvious to his siblings that what he was telling them was a lie.

His sister, Carly, sighed and shook her head while Shanna threw her brother a knowing look. "Tell us the truth, Chris."

Chris blew out a long sigh while he continued to ruffle Dodger's head absentmindedly, knowing full well that he won't be able to weasel his way out of this.

His brother and sisters loved Naomi to death and often asked him to bring her to Boston again but of course, he never did. Especially, since a lot has happened over these past few months.

"Naomi wants to spend Christmas alone this year," he lied again, his eyes never meeting his siblings' as Dodger moved to rest his head on Chris' lap. "Best not to bother her or anything."

Carly peered up at Shanna who was perched on the arm of the couch while Scott had a very confused look plastered on his face. Temporary silence draped over the Evans siblings but not long after Carly decided to speak up and confront her brother about what was actually going on between him and Naomi.

"Did you two have a falling out or something?"

Chris pursed his lips, casting his eyes downwards. "Can we just enjoy the day together? It---it's Christmas, Carly---"

"Exactly," Scott chimed in, throwing his brother a knowing look. "It's Christmas. So, whatever it is that's going on between you and Naomi should be put aside---"

An exasperated sigh slipped past Chris' lips as soon as he stood up from the couch and walked over to the fireplace. "You think we don't want to put this aside?" Chris raised his voice, turning around to meet his brother's eyes as an incredulous look washed over his face.

Did they really think that the both of them wanted this to happen? Sure, he may not know exactly what's going through Naomi's head right now but if there's one thing that he's sure about, it's that neither of them wanted for any of this to happen. Deep down, he knew. He just knew.

Shanna was about to say something but decided against it, knowing full well that her brother definitely did not want any of this to happen while Carly's head hung low, as did Scott's.

Chris' back was turned to them as he watched the flames dance around in the fireplace. They didn't mean to get their brother worked up about this but at least they knew now where he stood with his feelings, considering this outburst.

Carly pushed herself off the couch and inched a little closer to her brother before placing a careful hand on his shoulder. "When you're ready," she paused, squeezing Chris' shoulder to get him to turn around and face her, "you can choose to tell us about this or not. But for now, set both your differences and troubles aside and find her, Chris."

Scott nodded from behind them before adding, "She's right, Chris. Go get your jacket and find her. Because if you don't, well. . . we think you might regret it."
