Spare change
I slammed the car door behind me, oblivious of the damage it would make
"Margarita Eaker. I-I'm here for Margarita Eaker." Keys still in hand. My face looked feverish and felt hot. I didn't care. I had to see Peggy.
"Room 247. There wasn't much we could do-" I didn't get to hear the rest of it.
Why the hell did I wear slides? I asked myself as I struggled up the stairs. I slammed against the door marked 247 as I felt tears prick my eyes.
"Who's there?" I heard a sleepy voice answer. I recognized Peggy right away
"It's me, It's Isabel open the door please-" the door slowly opened revealing a doctor and Peggy. The doctor was at the door. I could tell he wanted to tell me something, a warning maybe but I didn't have time for that.
"Peggy, you idiot, what did you do?!" I was sobbing now.
"Calm down Im fine." She said with a slight slur. Oh god this was my fault. I let her go. Oh shit I should have told her to stay and study with me.
Peggy smiled. It was a warm one. One that you give a lost dog on the streets. "You look worse then me." It's true. The little bit of mascara I use daily was down my cheeks and my eyes might have been twice the size the were before and all red too. I was ugly crying.
The doctor interrupted."Isabel, right-" I nodded unable to form words," Isabel, your friend had a night out 'clubbing'. All we know is that she drank a lot and we found her and 3 other young men in a car on the side of the road. It had crashed. Margarita will be fine." He added at the sight of my fearful face.
I turned back to Peggy. "Oh what did you do, what did you do." I repeated under my breath.
I was so caught up in making sure she was ok that I didn't notice the constant buzzing in my pocket. I looked at Peggy and she nodded, allowing me to go answer the pile of text messages.
As soon as I got out of the room, I whipped out my phone and saw about a million texts from my mom. I'll spare you the details. She saw on this phone tracker app that I was at a hospital and was worried sick.
"Shit" I mumbled under my breath. I had forgotten to tell my mom where I was going. I felt a wave of guilt rush over me. She wanted to come to see if I was ok but couldn't because my baby brother was asleep. I immediately texted her I was ok and that Peggy has been hurt. I said I would probably stay overnight and regretfully couldn't go to school tomorrow. She agreed and said goodnight.
With that I closed my phone. I quickly realized that I had to pee so I went to the nearest girls bathroom but it was full. A line swirled out the door. I didn't want to wait in that so I hurried back to Peggy's room.
I sat next to her for a long time. The room was dark when I woke up. I realized I fell asleep next to pegs so I got up and went to the seats next to the bed.
I realized I still had to pee and ran to the girls room. Checking my phone I raced in. 2:47. God it's late.
I decided I wanted water so I went to the vending machines. Soon I realized that I had left my purse at home.
"Crap", I mumbled under my breath as I searched my pockets for spare change. Nothing.
I tore away from my thoughts when I saw someone out of the corner of my eye. Sweet Jesus I thought.
We made eye contact and I realized who this was.
Noah. Fricking. Evans.
I had to get out of there...
