River: Spirit - Stallion of the Cimarron Fanfic
Third Persons POV
Esperanza is heavily pregnant with two foals and is currently in labor. Her mate Strider is dead and her herd is nearby as she starts to push. Soon her son is born and is soon followed by his little sister. The herd whinny happily and come to greet the new foals. River looks around disorientated with her brother Spirit.
Until they lock eyes with their mother. Who neighs happily and they neigh back in greeting. Esperanza licks them both and Spirit pulls at a strand of her mane. River chuckles as her mother nibbles her brother's hair. Spirit smirks and nibbles her hair. She pushes him away with her head annoyed. "Not the hair" she nickers at him.
Esperanza smiles fondly at her two foals. Strider would be very proud. She smiles up at her herd. She encourages her foals to get up and gets up herself walking away to graze. Spirit jumps up, but loses balance and rolls along the grass.
River laughs at her brother. She stands up slowly and gets her balance. Then walks on wobbly legs over to Esperanza. Not wanting to be out done by his baby sister. Spirit gets up and canters over. He and River share their first drink of milk together. Esperanza gasps not used to the sensation and looks at them.
Spirit pulls away first and belches. River pulls away and licks the milk off her lips happily. Spirit and River prance around getting used to walking. As Esperanza goes back to grazing to replenish her strength from giving birth.
River spots and other foal and canters over. She neighs and tries to get her to play. But she just eyes her warily. She'd never seen another foal. It's just been her for the last week and now two new foals have joined the herd. Who happen to be the leaders foals. Her mother encourages her to go play with River and Spirit. So she does so. The two other expectant mares watch the foals fondly, wishing theirs would arrive soon.
Two other foals join the herd, one boy and one girl. The herd then sets out in search of water. River staying close to her brother. They run through the snow laughing. Racing their herd. They slide down the snow hill pass the herd. Drenching them in snow. Their mother smiles apologetically at her herd. They shake the snow off and head for the trees.
They drink from dripping icicles. River decides to have a drink from her mother. Spirit tried to lick and icicle and becomes stuck. When River hears a crack. She pulls away from her mother and sees her brother carrying an icicle and laughs.
The heard continue on in search for food. They find warm water by gazers. They graze as the five foals play in the water nickering happily. Splashing each other. They all stop and enjoy a drink of the warm water. Soon the ground rumbles under their feet. Three of the foals run to their mothers scared.
River and Spirit look at them confused. What had scared their friends? They hear a snort behind them and turn to see a herd of buffalo. One bellows at Spirit, who neighs back as his sister hides behind him. The buffalo chuckles and Spirit puts his hooves on him smiling.
Esperanza calls to her foals, saying it was time to move on. River and Spirit whinny goodbye to the buffaloes and gallop over to their mother. Who checks them over for injuries before setting off to lead the herd. River and Spirit look back at the buffalo herd. The leader bellows at them.
Both foals giggles. They rear up on their hind leg neighing. Before galloping after the herd.
River's POV
"And so I grew from colts to a fine stallion and mare. As wild and reckless as thunder over the land. Racing with the eagle, soaring with the wind. Flying?" I chuckle. "There are times me brother believe he could" I state. "Like our father before us. Spirit became leader of the Cimarron herd. And with that honor, came responsibility" I explain.
