Venus' POV
It's my first winter without my mother. I've decided to visit my older sister. She had her first fawn last spring. The Great Prince is his father. I don't get what my sister sees in him. He is so serious all the time. I mean, it's a good thing. He is the forest main protector. But I personally would want someone who knows how to have fun every once and a while.
I'm raining late meeting my sister. As there were hunters in the area and I had to hide. I heard the gunshots and prayed no one I knew was hurt. Anyway, the hunters are gone and I am now heading for the thicket where my sister made her den.
When I arrive, I see no one there. They must be out looking for food. But as I sniff the den, I notice their scent isn't fresh and frown. I paw the ground. Why would their scent be old? Did they move somewhere else? Are they in the prince's den?
"Hello" a familiar voice says and I look up to see friend owl.
"Oh hello friend owl, do you know where my sister is?" I ask him curious. He looks confused. "This was her den" I state.
"Oh, I am so sorry to be the one to tell you dear. But she passed away a few days ago, it was the hunters" he tells me.
"No, that can't be true!" I exclaim. "What about her son? Is Bambi ok? Please tell me he is ok" I plead fighting back tears.
"He is fine, the great prince is looking after him until spring. Then I must find a doe to raise him" he states.
"I'll raise him" I tell him.
"I do not think the prince would agree to that" he tells me.
"Why not? I'm his aunt, the only family he has aside from the prince" I snap.
"I'm sure the prince would rather a doe who has raised a fawn before, raise Bambi" he states.
"Just because I've never given birth to a fawn and raised it. Doesn't mean I can't raise one, I'd do better then that prince" I tell him. "Bambi needs love, affection and above all someone who knows how to have fun raise him. Not some serious stag who has never once smiled" I snap.
"As the boy's father, his word is final" he tells me.
"We'll see about that" I sneer and turn my back to him. I set off to look for my nephew and his father. I soon find them by a ravine and freeze behind a tree.
"Hello" I hear Bambi say sheepishly.
"I told you to stay near the den" he great prince says in a solemn tone. Still as serious as ever. "When I give you an order, I expect you to..." he stops talking looking at the ravine. "How did you... Did you jump?" he asks Bambi curious.
"Uh, yes sir" Bambi answers. I look at the distance. Most fawn don't make a jump like that until they lose their spots. And in male cases, get their antlers.
"I didn't make a jump like that until I had antlers" the prince states. I notice Bambi smiling up at him brightly. I notice the prince fight back a small smile. I can't believe he nearly smiled, he never smiles. At least, I've never seen him smile before. My sister claimed she had seen him do it on multiple occasions. But I never believed her.
"Yes. Well... We should be going home" the prince tells Bambi. He sets off for the den and for the first time I notice a rabbit on Bambi's back. Must be a friend of his.
"He's never said anything nice like that before" Bambi states happily.
"I guess he saw how brave you were. Gosh, what a jump. It was like flying" the rabbit states. As they left I see another fawn, with antlers try to make the jump and fail. He fell into the mud. But I could tell he wasn't seriously hurt, just a bruised ego and left.
I followed the prince and Bambi discreetly. Though I am sure the prince sensed me. I watched Bambi say good bye to his friend Thumper (aka the rabbit). Then he settle under the fallen tree that was the prince's den and fall asleep. "I know you are here Venus" the prince states lowly. So as not to wake Bambi.
"You should of informed me of my sisters death" I state as I exit the tree line.
"It would not change anything" he states.
"Yes, it would have, I would of taken Bambi in. Not you" I state.
"You know nothing about raising a fawn" he states.
"Nor do you" I snap lightly. "But I can't deny, Bambi seems happy here" I state looking at him.
"I have friend owl looking for a new mother for him now" he tells me. "With winter coming to an end, he should have little trouble finding a new home for Bambi" he states.
"If you don't want him, I will raise him. He is my nephew and he deserves to be raised by family" I tell him.
"No, he deserves someone who knows what she is doing when it comes to raising a fawn" he states. "I only want him safe and happy" he tells me.
"So do I" I snap.
"What if you meet the potential doe? We both can make the decision together" he tells me.
"What about Bambi? Shouldn't he have a say?" I ask him. "It is his life" I state.
"He is to young to make such a decision" he states.
"He should still know" I tell him.
"I will tell him" he states avoiding my eyes.
"I will be watching you both" I tell him. "Guard him with your life prince, or it's me you should fear. Not the hunters" I state and left. I decide to claim my sister's den for the time being. It was safe and provides good shelter from the elements.
When I fall asleep, I wake up in a dream meadow. I look around hearing a familiar voice call my name. I finally spot the source of the voice. "Sister" I say and run to her. I nuzzle her happily. "Why did you have to leave? I didn't even get to say goodbye" I cry.
"Everything in the forest has its season. Where one thing falls, another grows. Maybe not what was there before, but something new and wonderful, all the same" she tells me.
"You sound like mum" I tell her and she smiles.
"Watch over him for me Venus" she tells me.
"Of course, I'll look over Bambi" I tell her.
"I'm not talking about Bambi" she tells me. And the dream fades away. The rest of the night, I slept soundly with no further dreams. Confused about who my sister was talking about.
