Worried
Katana gasped bolting from her bed with both hands reaching out with sweat running down her face to her neck. She breathed heavily trying to catch her breath wide eyes.
"what happened?" Zuko looked over his shoulder.
Katara didn't answer right away as she looked around seeing she wasn't dreaming anymore.
"Fuck," she whispered covering her face.
That got Zuko to sit up rubbing his eyes, he yawned looking at her confused.
"Bad dream?" He asked quietly pushing her hair off her shoulders seeing the sweat.
"I think," Katara sighed.
He gently pulled her back to lay on the pillows, she stared at the ceiling comprehending that she was awake.
"Tell me what happened?" Zuko laid on his side watching her.
"I was falling, I don't remember much before that but I was falling from the clouds, I know I was facing the sky and my back was to the earth so I don't know how close to the ground I was," Katara covered her eyes with one of her hands.
"I couldn't breathe, but I wasn't crying,"
"Must've hit the ground when I woke up," she smiled turning her head to Zuko but stayed laying on her back.
"Your okay now at least right? On the ground and not splattered," Zuko teased.
"It was weird though, it was like another dream I had... before our wedding, deja vu," Kataras smile dropped a little.
She tried remembering anything else from her dream, but it felt calm, she was sitting above the clouds until she didn't feel anything under her and she was falling.
"We'll just keep you off the sides of appa, make sure you don't fall off the sides," he offered a smile.
"Appa... aangs pet," she remembered.
"Flying bison..." he breathed.
Both of them were silent, there would be no other way for her to fall from the clouds except from a flying bison. Katara gulped a little turning on her side to face him.
"It's just a dream, I've been on appa plenty of times and no one has ever fallen off on accident," Zuko reassured her and she snorted a little.
"So there was times it was on purpose?" She asked.
"Aang liked to jump off into the clouds a lot, and I got pushed once," he closed his eyes nodding.
"What did it feel like?" Katara asked again wide eyed.
"I mean I didn't realize what was happening at first, when I fell I thought I'd land right away like if you tripped, but I just kept falling for a while," Zuko explained calmly as Katara was memorized.
"I honestly never felt so at peace though, it was quiet, I wasn't touching anything, almost like when your underwater, I knew I'd be fine so I wasn't afraid," he opened his gold eyes again and smiled at her.
"It's addicting,"
Katara felt breathless looking at him, his eyes held so much life, his scars told so many stories. He was something else. But she wasn't scared to be close to him. It felt natural.
"I can't wait to feel that," she smiled softly.
Zukos heart fluttered at her voice, her smile, her. She was just as addicting. Unable to take his eyes from her.
Unaware of each other's feelings. Dancing around the other scared of rejection, scared they couldn't do this again one day. To be each other's comfort, each other's warmth.
"Are You okay now?" Zuko asked in a low raspy voice.
"I'm much better, thank you," Katara whispered.
He moved the blanket more to offer a closer spot for her, Katara scooted closer to rest against him. Zuko closed his arms around her and they buried each other under the blanket. It felt nice to hold someone close instead of being alone. Katara sighed relaxed when Zuko played with the back of her hair unable to go back to sleep so fast.
"Good night kat," Zuko breathed pressing a soft kiss on the top of her head and resting his head on top of hers.
"Good night Zuko," she pulled him closer by the shirt as their legs tangled together, he didn't want her to be cold.
He watched out the window keeping his arms tight around her, he couldn't help but feel as if something was wrong, or something wrong was going to happen. He remembered Katara waking from a nightmare before their wedding... and then he was attacked. He didn't know if she had some way of knowing but it didn't make sense. And now her falling? Was it a coincidence?
No. It couldn't have been.
Not when he was dreaming of his own home burning with a red sky and screams that were so loud it felt like hell. A Damn-nation.
He pressed his nose to her hair trying to rid of his own dream.
It couldn't have been a coincidence.
The day of black sun was only three weeks away.
He had to be ready.
—
"Hey so how was the commander guy the other day?" Katara noticed Zuko was in his study more today since he and Azula came back from the troops.
"Zhao? Irritating as usual," Zuko frowned but kept his eyes on his papers.
Katara hummed looking over his shoulder seeing what he was doing, she moved a book off of some papers and raised a brow.
"Dear master," Katara picked up the letter and read outloud to get zukos attention.
"Hey stop it, I'm working," Zuko sighed turning to grab the paper.
"As we, OTWL, are aware of events that will be arriving soon, I am hoping to spend this up coming weekend-" Katara stopped and looked at Zuko flatly.
"Your leaving for the weekend?" She raised a brow unamused.
"Training," he snatched the paper back.
"For what? Is he another fire bender part of the Order?" Katara asked.
"No he's my swords master, he's been training me since I was ten," Zuko explained organizing his papers and rolled the letter up to send it off.
"It's the way he trains, he is very isolated and disciplining, makes a man stronger," he made a mocking hand gesture to the master he respects.
"When I came back from my banishment after Aang was captured, I spent six months with him," he nodded getting back to work.
"Can I come?" She asked a little hopeful.
Zuko thought about it for a moment not knowing what his master would actually say.
"Sure, but you'll have to train, and he won't be easy, he made me bruise more than pakku ever did," Zuko smiled back at her.
"We'll say we're going to ember island for a couple get away," he teased, making Katara laugh a little. Zuko yawned and rubbed his face tiredly.
"Did you sleep last night?" He looked up at her worried.
"I slept fine, I fell right back into sleep," she patted the top of his head and sat on the desk.
"You didn't sleep last night?" Katara questioned.
"I slept," he snorted shaking his head.
"Your a bad liar, what's bothering you?" She touched the top of his head to make him look up.
"I'm just worried about you kat," Zuko gave a small grin.
"Zuko I'm fine, I told you, why are You so worried?" Her hand fell down to touch his cheek gently, she felt horrible if he can't sleep because of her.
"You've been off, stressed over the Jet situation that was never ending, thought you cause the cold, and with the plans," Zuko blushed looking down.
"I was, but it's taken care of, your healed, maybe you shouldn't go to your master this weekend, maybe another time?" Katara offered gently rubbing his scarred cheek.
"Y-yea okay," he gulped, folding for her as his chest tightened.
"Is that all that's bothering you?" She asked still concerned.
"I just have a meeting tonight with zhao, other generals, and my father, not worried just not looking forward to it," Zuko tsked pulling away before he does anything Katara says with the way she touched him and talked to him.
"Sounds fun," she stuck out her tongue.
"Dreadingly fun," he returned the face of sarcasm.
They both blushed looking away as Zuko stared at the papers and Katara looked out the window.
"I'll let you finish your work, I'll be out in the garden," Katara smiled gently back at him.
She got up to leave the study but a warm hand grabbed hers and held her tightly.
"Can you stay?" Zuko mumbled embarrassed as he gripped her hand.
She gulped with her ears burning more but nodded hopeful and grabbed a chair to join him.
