Exotic
"The waters not as cold as I thought it was," Katara wiped her wet hair out of her face and rung out the soaked ends.
"Says you, the oceans always cold," Zuko rolled his eyes and ran his hand throw his hair to push it off his forehead.
"I wonder if those guys are still bothering ty Lee?" She looked around trying to find the girls, she saw Azula laying on her stomach reading a book in front of Mai who looked bored under the umbrella.
"Don't worry, she can easily take care of herself," he assured her and Katara saw some girls whispering and giggling pointing at Zuko.
"Hey I got a question," Zuko blushed a little rubbing the back of his neck. "W-what- I.. uh.. what are we?"
Katara blinked dumbfounded.
"What?" She gulped putting her hands behind her back.
"Just uh- uh what are we calling ourselves here? Just friends or.." he covered his mouth looking down embarrassed as Katara tilted her head to the side.
"I mean we are technically engaged," Zuko pursed his lips.
"Hmm I guess I never thought of that, I still find it hard to believe we have to marry each other in like three months," Katara hummed thinking about it for a minute.
"Okay, how about we stay as friends here but if there's trouble like those girls giggling behind you or those guys before get to touchy, we use each other as backup to get them to fuck off, yea?" Katara smirked up at him crossing her arms.
"Sure sounds like a plan," Zuko smiled agreeing.
"Besides, trying this whole friend thing isn't the worst thing, I'm actually choosing to spend time with you rather than sitting in the sand miserable," Katara giggled as they walked back to the others and Zuko glanced over seeing Mai. Who sat in the sand. Miserable.
"It could be worst," he chuckled agreeing.
"Hey beach bums, we're playing ball next," Azula stood up as she was staring at the volley ball game ahead of them as the two dried off.
"How do you play?" Katara used the towel to dry her long hair off.
"It's not hard, make sure the ball doesn't hit the ground and get it over the net, inside the lines, it's easier to hit the ball like this," Zuko put his hands together as ty Lee jogged over excitedly.
"You'll catch on," he nodded as ty Lee grunted trying to drag Mai along.
"Come on Mai! We need all of us!" She whined and fell on the ground as Mai stood.
"Huddle up!" Azula barked as they got to the court of sand.
"See that girl with the stupid pigtails? When she runs towards the ball there's the slightest hesitation in her left foot, I'm willing to bet a childhood injury has weakened her," Azula motioned over to the other team.
"Keep serving the ball to her left and we'll destroy her and the rest of her team," she smiled cruelly.
"Dismissed,"
"Kind of intense for a little game?" Katara whispered to Zuko as they got in position.
"Just bump the ball towards ty Lee or Azula, they'll attack the strongest," Zuko nodded softly.
"Or don't play if your going to make us lose," Mai rolled her eyes standing in front of them.
"We're not going to lose," Katara frowned and concentrated.
Azula was the first to serve as she back kicked the ball and it dug deep into the sand in the center of the court.
The second round the other team served and Zuko ran towards the ball and used his foot to save them and Katara jumped a little to send the ball towards Azula. The Princess spiked the ball in the sand as the pigtail girl missed the save.
"Nice one Azula!" Katara gasped amazed.
They played again as ty Lee rebounded the ball with her foot and landed on top of the net easily, she bounced back and flipped to the sand. The ball came back and Mai ran to knee the ball back with easy.
"Kat it's coming your way!" Zuko called as he missed the ball and came at her, she nodded running and hit the ball back to make the winning point.
"Yay!" Ty Lee squealed as the couple high fived walking passed each other.
"Yes we defeated You, now you will never rise from the ashes of your shame and humiliation!" Azula clenched her fists with victory.
"Well that was fun," she sighed smiling as ty Lee wrapped her arms around Kataras shoulders as they all looked at the Princess.
"Hey I'm having a party tonight, you should come by," two boys their age walked over to Katara and ty Lee.
"Yea, you look exotic," the taller boy winked at Katara as she touched ty Lee's arm.
"You from the colonies?" He hummed getting closer.
"No I'm adopted," Katara said flatly as she was obviously sarcastic.
"This is my sister," ty Lee played along with a grin as they giggled.
"Sisters, I dig that," the other boy purred.
"But you two should definitely come by," he brought up again.
"Sure! We love parties," ty Lee beamed brightly at them.
"Your friend can come too," the boy motioned to Mai.
"What about my brother and I?" Azula frowned confused. " aren't you going to invite us?"
They looked at each other debating about it.
"You don't know who we are do you?" She hummed innocently.
"Don't you know who we are? We're Chan and ruon jian," Chan raised a brow at them.
"So is that a no?" Katara batted her eyes at them with a small pout.
"Fine, they're invited too," Chan chuckled smirking at her.
"Can't wait," she scrunched up her nose to fake a smile letting go of ty Lee.
"Just so you know, some of the most important teenagers in the fire nation are going to be there," Chan explained to them seriously. "So try to act normal,"
"Wait until he finds out your the next fire lady," Zuko whispered in Kataras ear and she covered her mouth laughing.
"Oh yea the next fire lord being there is no biggie either," she teased as Mai stuck out her tongue in disgust.
—
"So how come you didn't tell those guys who you were?" Mai asked curiously at dinner as they sat on the balcony together at the table.
"It sounded intriguing, I'm so use to people worshiping us," Azula sighed a little flipping her hair out of her face.
"They should," ty Lee ate some shrimp with her chop sticks.
"I know, I love it," Azula grinned.
"I think it's kinda nice taking the attention off us for a while, act our age and all," Katara ate some rice and reached over Zuko to steal a roll of sushi.
"Exactly, I wanted to see how people would treat us if they didn't know who we were," Azula agreed.
"Unlike someone sticking out," she smirked at Katara who sipped some water.
"Yea they called me exotic, like a bird, I'm not exactly thrilled," Katara rolled her eyes at the compliment she got earlier.
"It's not like everyone here has tan skin and blue eyes, it's not normal," Mai shrugged a little on the side as Katara raised a brow at her.
"Yea I know, I get that shit enough at the palace I just don't want to hear it everywhere I go for once," Katara inhaled sharply and looked down at her bowl.
"I'm just saying your different in the fire nation, your going to stick out more," mai said simply sipping her tea.
"Yea and you'd be left in the snow cause you blend in so much," Katara snapped standing up and left the table.
"What's her deal?" Azula made a face.
Zuko got up to make sure she was okay as he left them without another word.
"Hey kat, what was that all about?" Zuko knocked on the bedroom door and peaked in seeing her laying on the couch.
"Sorry, I don't like Mai," Katara covered her face with the pillow.
"Yea I understand," Zuko smiled a little as he sat on the floor next to her.
"Is something else bothering you?" He asked gently.
"I know I stick out... You all are pale," Katara was muffled by the pillow.
"You know the first thing I got when I arrived at the fire nation what shit for how I looked, I was told my blue eyes were ugly, my hairs messy, my skin wasn't normal and my body wasn't up to standards, I never cared about that kind of stuff before, I like my eyes and my hair and my body," she sighed putting the pillow on her chest as she stared at the ceiling.
"But it just keeps getting thrown in my face," she looked at him a little upset. "I like myself, I just don't like sticking out and being told it's not okay,"
"Kat youre beautiful," Zuko smiled at her as they looked at each other.
"I swear you're the most beautiful person on this island, your fun and passionate, you're just gorgeous," he told her confidently as Katara blinked surprised a little.
"And flip anyone off who tells you otherwise, because they must be blind," he looked at her softly.
"Is it stupid that your the first person that's not family to tell me I'm beautiful?" Katara gulped a little.
"Well don't be so surprised kat, your pretty," he touched her hand gently as Katara smiled at him a little.
"If your lying to me I'm going to kick your ass," she pursed her lips.
"Have you looked at me?" He motioned to his face. "I have no reason to lie,"
"Your pretty too Zuko," she giggled sitting up.
"Come on, we have a party to go too," Katara grabbed his hand to pull him up.
