Chapter One: Orientation

I honestly love how this chapter turned out. So I'm going to have a pattern where Kuro will interact with canonical events (in this case orientation) and the next chapter will have special Kuro-only events.

There will be special exceptions to this, but that's the pattern you guys can generally expect.

Anyway here we go!

Usually, I would plan to spend my time finding my father and getting justice for my mother.

However, Yumie had been...more than a little encouraging lately to get me to "have a normal life." So, after weeks of her nonsense, I applied to UA.

"Oh my gosh! I can't believe it! You're all grown up now!" She exclaimed on the other end of the call. "You tell me all about your first day when you get back, you hear?"

"Yeah, yeah," I smirked. "You're lucky I decided to take your advice, otherwise I would still be at home."

"See, your big sis is looking out for ya! Let me know if there are any cute boys in your class!"

"Ew! Gross, you're way too old for them!"

"You're saying I'm old?" Yumie gasped. "I thought you loved me!"

I rolled my eyes and ended the call as I finally turned to walk onto the campus of UA. I really shouldn't have had to walk, but I didn't want to risk missing the train or needing a ride.

The bustling student body of UA reminded me of a beehive whose bees had yet to swarm. Loud, yes. Annoying? Certainly. But so far, harmless.

Most of the buzzing was in the main hallways, and the more I turned away from them, the quieter and more deserted the hallways became until I at last got to my class. Inside was a single male student with blue hair and glasses. As soon as he saw me, he got up to greet me.

"Greetings, fellow classmate! My name is Tenya Iida! I look forward to studying alongside you!" He exclaimed.

"I'm Kuro Shiro," I replied, taking a step back. "Where's everyone else?"

"I got here as soon as the doors opened. I believe our classmates are lingering in the halls. Come! Let us retrieve them together!"

Before I could even protest, he was out the door, leaving me to peer out wondering where he went. Hopefully, he didn't expect me to go find him. Right?

I didn't dwell on those thoughts and instead found myself a seat next to a window. As I waited for the others to arrive (or in Iida's case, return), I rested my head on my arm for a little bit.

"Pardon me, but are you alright? Did you get enough rest?"

Slowly, I opened my eyes to see a girl with a black hair ponytail looking at me, a concerned look on her face.

"Oh, yeah, don't worry," I said sheepishly, sitting up and rubbing the back of my neck. "I was just dozing while I was waiting for our other classmates to arrive."

"I see!" She replied. "Would you like to go back to sleep?"

"No, but thanks. What's your name?"

She took the seat behind mine as she spoke. "My name is Momo Yaoyorozu, nice to meet you!"

I returned her smile and greeting, although I was quick to notice the rest of the class was buzzing with the other students. Yaoyorozu turned to greet another student who took the seat next to her.

"Hey! You're that cutie I saw in the entrance exam!"

"..Sorry? You probably have the wrong person."

The boy who had spoken so suddenly had blonde hair with what looked like a sideways lightning bolt. He leaned on my desk, a wide grin on his face.

"Say, would you go out with me sometime?"

I shook my head. "Sorry, I'm not interested. You remind me of some of my friends, though."

"Oh, my bad! Sorry about that. Wait, are they good connections or bad connections?"

"That depends," I laughed. "Anyways, my name is Kuro Shiro. Nice to meet you."

"That's a cool name! My name is Denki Kaminari! We should hang out sometime!"

I nodded and we exchanged numbers as the rest of the class chatted around us, but he was soon pulled away by a guy with red hair to his seat.

Tuning out the rather loud chatter of my classmates, I once again laid my head down on my desk, hoping the teacher would come in soon so things could start happening.

"It took fifteen minutes for you guys to settle down. That won't cut it for this class."

Huh. Guess the teacher's here now.

"Anyways, change into your gym clothes and meet me on the field."

"But, Mr. Aizawa, what about orientation?" I didn't recognize the girl who spoke up, but she looked cute.

"Pro-heroes don't waste time on things like orientation. Now meet me on the field in five minutes if you don't want to be expelled."

We were able to meet him on the field in two. Nobody wanted to risk expulsion, not on the first day.

"Hey, Shiro!" Kaminari called, waving me over.

I grinned at him as I stood next to him. "Wanna explain why you left me without explanation, boy?"

The red-haired boy who'd dragged him away earlier rubbed the back of his head sheepishly. "Yeah, sorry, that was my bad."

Kaminari laughed as Mr. Aizawa cleared his throat to get our attention. I hadn't even realized he'd already called out one of my classmates-an ash blonde who looked really angry at something.

Eh, he probably didn't sleep well. Whatever.

Honestly I hadn't really been paying attention to anything being said, mostly wondering what my family was doing while I was gone.

"Whoa! 705.2 kilometers? That's so cool!" Kaminari cheered, after a large explosion commanded the attention of the class.

"That looked like so much fun!" A girl cheered, and a chorus of shouts agreeing with her rose up.

"You think this is all fun and games?" Our teacher said, "If you're going to treat this class like a game, then we'll have a game. At the end of the day, whoever has the lowest ranking will be expelled."

"Then we'd better work as hard as we can!" The redhead exclaimed. "Good luck to you two!"

Several hours later, I was relieved to be able to get a drink before my last test. My quirk had been more useful in these tests than I'd first thought, and I was glad.

"Your quirk is so cool! I love the colors, it's almost like fireworks!"

I glanced at Kaminari as I finished a small water break. "Thank you! You've got an interesting one yourself! Electricity, is it?"

"Yeah, but I can't use too much or I'll fry my brain," he said embarrassed. "After that I become a blubbering idiot for a couple minutes."

"Hey, that's alright. We're here to improve our quirks, right?" I smiled. "So I'm sure you'll find some way to overcome that!"

He took a large gulp of water and nodded. Before he could say anything we were dragged into our last tests.

"Shiro, that last blast you made was super manly!" The redhead cheered.

"Oh, uh, thanks," I smiled. "Your throw wasn't bad either."

"Really? I didn't think it was anything special. But hey, thanks!"

At this moment we were now waiting on a final classmate, Midoriya, to finish the ball throw. To be honest I wasn't paying too much attention to it, but from what I heard it sounded almost intense. Poor kid.

When he had thrown his ball, our teacher showed a list of how we had ranked. Kaminari and I shared a grin as we saw ourselves in a comfortable middle position.

Midoriya, however, had placed last.

"That's all for today. You guys are dismissed," Mr. Aizawa said, turning away from us.

"Pardon me, Mr. Aizawa, but what about the expulsion condition?" Iida exclaimed stiffly, making Midoriya flinch.

"That was a test."

If he wanted an uproar...he certainly got an uproar. But hey, it was better than Midoriya-or anyone for that matter- getting expelled on the first day.

So, all things considered, I decided that my time at UA would not be as dull or as boring as I had feared.
