The song I have chosen here is O RE PIYA from the movie AAJA NACHLE

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

Laksh exclaimed the moment he found his childhood best friend standing at his doorstep beaming at him like a Cheshire cat. He immediately got up from the couch hurtling towards him and tackling him in a bear hug.

“Dr. Laksh Mathur, you do realize that it’s your job to save the people and not kill them with such torturous hugs?”, the chortles of his best friend made Laksh frown deeply.

“And you do realize that we are meeting after eight months… Eight long months, Sanskaar”, Laksh glared at his best friend, “And I’m pretty sure, hadn’t it been my engagement you wouldn’t have shown your stupid face right now also.”

Laksh finished his rant with a humph and Sanskaar chuckled shaking his head. Laksh and Sanskaar had been best friends ever since they could remember. Laksh was the brother Sanskaar never had. Be it their first crush or first time they fought with someone, they had shared each and everything. They were practically inseparable and when Sanskaar came to know about Laksh’s engagement with the girl he had been in love with for last five years, he couldn’t help but come back home much before he had planned, no matter even if he was back just for a week.

“See! See! You’re not even denying that”, Laksh whined complaining and Sanskaar let out a small laugh, “Geez, Laksh! How do your patients tolerate you?”

“Shut up! My patients love me.”

“But you’re still a child”, Sanskaar said knowing exactly what to say to irk Laksh beyond measures. Well, he had to compensate for all those past eight months they weren’t together.

“You’re the worst best friend ever. You know that? And I’m not child. FYI, it’s me… me who’s getting married”, Laksh huffed angrily but even he couldn’t help a small smile creep up to his lips as he found Sanskaar almost rolling down on the couch laughing.

“Alright. Alright. By the way, where’s your would be fiancée? Wait… wait… let me guess… Still at the rehabilitation centre, right?”, Sanskaar smiled folding his arms across his chest and wiggling his eyebrows.

Laksh rolled his eyes, “Yes! So what? She’s also a doctor.”

“So, why aren’t you there?”

“I was about to go. Her shift is almost over and my night shift is about to begin”, Laksh replied shrugging his shoulder and Sanskaar raised an eyebrow at him, “So, both of you work in different shifts? Why?”

“The Rehab has only two doctors, so, we are taking alternate shifts. Besides…”

Laksh’s mobile phone rang cutting him in between and a huge grin made its way to his face. Sanskaar chuckled knowing who it could be making his best friend behave like a maniac. His fiancée, obviously.

“Hello, Ragini”, Laksh chimed excitedly but instantly his excitement got overshadowed and a frown made its way to his face as he sighed deeply. “Alright, I’m coming. This ‘girl’ will surely drive me insane”, Laksh complained loudly and Sanskaar narrowed his eyes seeing his best friend’s mood taking a 360 degree turn.

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s an emergency. I’ll have to go to Rehab immediately”, Laksh replied hurriedly making his way towards his room.

“But what happened?”, Sanskaar asked impatiently as the curiosity got the best of him and he entered Laksh’s room too.

Laksh took a deep breath before speaking, “A month ago, police caught a gang engaged in human trafficking. Several girls were rescued and all of them were eventually sent to their families but there is this girl who’s getting on my nerves. She doesn’t speak even when she’s not dumb. She won’t let anyone come near her and bloody hell she keeps running away from the rehab every chance she gets.”

“Maybe she’s scared”, Sanskaar mumbled and Laksh scrunched his eyebrows as his best friend’s eyes gleamed the next moment, “Can I also come?”

Captain Sanskaar Shekhawat, you’re a soldier not a doctor. What will you do there? You’re already 24 years old, Sanskaar. Live a little. Go and hang out. Besides, that girl is crazy. I can bet on that”, Laksh chided rolling his eyes but even Sanskaar wasn’t ready to budge.

“I am a soldier whose duty is to save the citizens of the country and this girl clearly needs saving. So, I’m coming with you. End of the discussion. Get ready, I’ll be waiting for you outside”, Sanskaar cajoled giving Laksh his best smile before sauntering out of his room.

Aashirwaad Rehabilitation Centre’ was owned by an NGO and was opened for anyone and everyone who needed help and Sanskaar had always been proud of Laksh when he decided to join this place. They were so different yet so alike. Both of them willing to help people selflessly.

The moment he stepped into the premises, a smile graced Sanskaar’s features. He didn’t know himself why but this place felt serene. But instantly that smile got replaced by shock and confusion as several people ran up to him and he involuntarily flinched back.

Fan following?! When did he become so famous?

And the next instant he felt two little hands fisting the shirt to his sides and a head pushed against his back.

O re piya haaye
O re piya
O re piya haaye
O re piya

Sanskaar palms instantly went and covered those hands as he felt them trembling against his sides and tried freeing his shirt from the grip but the grip only tightened even more. Feeling the delicate features of the hand it wasn’t hard for him to guess that it was a girl… a very young girl.

Was she the same girl Laksh had been talking about?

Loosening the grip finger by finger patiently, Sanskaar finally got his shirt free from her grasp and turned around with her hand still in his. But the vision his eyes beheld next was something he had never expected. The delicate features of the two little hands did no justice to what stood in front of him.

Two fervid, frightened yet captivating doe-orbs that hesitantly glanced all around as people chasing after her started piling up. Her skin had turned pale due to exhaustion yet somehow her full lips had managed to retain a light pink shade. Her petite stature trembled and her lips quivered as she realized she was captured again.

She wiggled to get herself free from Sanskaar’s grip but even she knew that with a man of such a built who stood almost a foot taller to her, she stood no chance. Her eyes started welling up and she lifted her head up letting her timid stare meet Sanskaar’s eyes for the first time and the way he was staring at her made her squirm. He just couldn’t take his eyes off of her. A foreign feeling tugging at the strings of his heart as her eyes silently pleaded him to let her go.

How young was she? Fifteen? Sixteen?!

“Thank God, Sanskaar! You caught her”, Ragini breathed with relief holding the sides of her waist, catching her breath, worn out as if she had run a marathon. The little girl squeaked and her tussle to free herself intensified.

“Hey! Hey! Hey! Relax. I’m not going to hurt you”, Sanskaar spoke slowly to her as if making a child understand. Her scuffle slowed down yet she kept fidgeting for she knew what was coming next. They would pierce that painful thing into her skin, everything would turn out dark and later she would find herself locked in the same room.

A sob escaped her lips as her eyes landed on a nurse approaching her with the injection in her hand. Sanskaar followed her line of vision and instantly shielded her behind his back before looking at his best friend, “Laksh, is the injection necessary?”

“Yes, Sanskaar! Or else she won’t quiet down.”

“But she’s scared. Can’t we just skip it?”, Sanskaar tried to reason and every pair of shocked eyes scrutinized him trying to comprehend what he was trying to do.

“What are you saying Sanskaar?”, Laksh narrowed his eyes reasoning his own self if it was a good idea to bring Sanskaar here.

“Just…”, Sanskaar took a deep breath before asking , “Where’s her room?”

“Last room in the right wing”, Ragini answered being still confused. Sanskaar smiled looking at the girl and whispered to her, “They are not going to give you injection.”

Her eyes immediately widened and she looked around. And for the first time in a while she believed. She finally believed someone. There was something enticing about that voice of his that pacified her scorching soul. He took her hand in his and led her towards her room and everyone was dumbfounded for it was the first time she was not only letting someone near her but was also listening to him.

O re piya haaye
O re piya

= 💫 = 💫 =

Entering the small room, Sanskaar made her sit on the single bed lying in one corner and pulled a chair before sitting in front of her.

“So, what’s your name? My name is Sanskaar”, he spoke slowly and tenderly for he didn’t want to scare her away.

No reply!

“Where are you from?”

No reply!

“Do you know anyone to whom we can send you?”

Yet again no reply!

She simply kept fidgeting with her fingers on her lap looking anywhere but him. Sanskaar slowly took her hand in his and whispered, “You can trust me!”

And her eyes immediately met his as he gave her the warmest of the warm smiles. Her own lips itched to twitch upwards but she held the urge back for the hard walls around her heart weren’t that easy to break. On getting no reply from her again, Sanskaar sighed before saying, “I think you should rest. Okay? I’ll come back tomorrow.”

Taking a deep breath, he got up from the chair but was instantly held back with a light grip on his wrist and then he heard a small whisper, “Swara!”

Udne laga kyun mann baawla re
Aaya kahan se yeh hausla re
O re piya
O re piya haaye

“Huh?!”, he looked at her astounded. And when finally her gaze met his, she said her first sentence ever at the rehab, “My name is Swara.”

She said and Sanskaar gave her his most dazzling smile before sitting back on the chair. “Swara…”, he whispered slowly as if testing the name on his tongue and his lips and he couldn’t miss the twinkle her eyes as he took her name affectionately.

“So, Swara. How old are you?”

“E-Eighteen”, she whispered back and held Sanskaar flabbergasted. She didn’t look like an eighteen years old girl.

“Do you have a family or do you know someone where we can send you?”

And that had her sobbing hysterically, “Please… Please… Don’t send me anywhere… They’ll sell me again. Please.”

“Hey! Relax… Relax. We won’t send you. Just stop crying”, Sanskaar immediately held her face in his palms and the warmth of his hands seeping inside her skin calmed her down slowly.

“They… They sold you?”

Swara nodded and Sanskaar stiffened. What the hell?! How could someone do this? Not only to her but to anyone!

“So, you don’t have anyone?”

She shook her head in denial and once again she blubbered with tears. Sanskaar wiped off her tears tenderly and smiled, the same smile she had started liking, “Are you hungry?”

She nodded again and he shuffled through his pockets looking for something. She narrowed her eyes intently but the moment his hand emerged out of his pocket, her eyes gleamed. Sanskaar chuckled looking at her dazed expression as her eyes remained adorably focused on the huge bar of Dairy Milk Silk in his hand.

He forwarded it towards her and she immediately grabbed it, tore off the wrapping and started nibbling at the chocolate without a word. But hardly moments later her eyes caught hold of something outside her window. Something she had never seen. She jumped out of her bed and ran to the window holding the iron shielding with both her hands as shiny little things rose up high, lighting the entire night sky like thousands of shimmering stars.

“What’s that?”, she asked still bewitched by the beauty floating in front of her eyes.

“They’re sky lanterns, Swara. People of this town light these lanterns twice every year to celebrate the advent of the spring and the autumn season”, Sanskaar replied smiling and standing next to her near the window. It was spring then. Their town was a small one on the foothills of the Himalayas and people loved celebrating each and every little thing.

“It’s so… beautiful”, Swara whispered still amazed by the lanterns. She still wasn’t able to believe that something so beautiful actually existed in the world. Her own world was dark and scarred and she dreaded going back in there.

“If you really liked it, then I’ll take you to see it next time”, Sanskaar, too, whispered next to her and her eyes immediately went out to his, glimmering with childish anticipation.

“You will?”, she exclaimed and Sanskaar nodded before saying, “Only if you’ll behave like a good girl. You’ll listen to everyone and won’t run away.”

Swara furrowed her eyebrows contemplating his words. Could she put her trust on someone again? But one look at his face and those sincere eyes, she found herself nodding even before she could realize and Sanskaar smiled for umpteenth time once again.

= 💫 = 💫 =

“Laksh, you can’t send her away. She has nowhere to go”, Sanskaar cajoled as he entered the rehabilitation center with Laksh the next day.

“Then what do you want me to do Sanskaar?”

“Just let her be here. She’s in a shock because of whatever happened to her. Just give her sometime and then you can give her some small job in here only. I mean, if nothing else then she can be at least one of the caretakers. Please, Laksh. Please. Bhai ke liye itna nahi karega?”, Sanskaar gave him his best puppy dog face and Laksh rolled his eyes.

“Don’t play the ‘Bhai Card’ with me Sanskaar!”, Laksh huffed but even he knew he couldn’t deny that face, “Okay. Fine. I’ll talk to the authorities.”

“Yeah!! Thank you so much”, Sanskaar almost jumped with excitement and Laksh narrowed his eyes at him as he said, “And by the way… why are you so concerned about her? Don’t tell me it’s the love at first sight thing.”

And this time Sanskaar rolled his eyes, “Shut up, Laksh. She’s just a kid. Besides, I don’t do relationships.”

Laksh shook his head in despair on his hopelessly unromantic best friend and opened his mouth to say something but was immediately cut off by an uproar. Laksh and Sanskaar both ran towards the direction of chaos and found several people cornering Swara at the end of the hall.

“Was she trying to run again?”, Laksh mumbled and a pang of pain tugged at Sanskaar’s heart. She said she wouldn’t runaway!

Without him realizing, Sanskaar’s feet took him to her and he took in her scared features. Her eyes glanced at everyone surrounding her helplessly then she finally found Sanskaar staring at her. A faint smile made its way to her lips but the smile instantly faded away as she noticed his grave expressions.

What was wrong with him?

“Were you trying to run away again, Swara?”, Sanskaar asked and she shook her head vigorously in denial. She wasn’t.

“Then?”, he asked tilting his head sideways as she fidgeted with something behind her back and she kept herself pressed against the wall.

“Swara, what are you hiding?”

She shook her head looking around and Sanskaar smiled understanding her, “Laksh, can you take your staff and leave?”

“Excuse me?”

“Leave Laksh”, Sanskaar chuckled and Laksh pouted like a child whose candy had just been snatched away. His best friend shooed him away just because of a girl he had met yesterday. But he went away anyway.

“So, what is it?”, Sanskaar asked Swara stepping closer to her folding his arms across his chest. Swara bit her lower lips nervously as she brought forward her hand from behind her and caught him off guard.

Tanabana tanabana bunti hawa haaye bunti hawa
Boondein bhi toh aaye nahi baaz yahan
Saazish mein shaamil saara jahan hai
Har zarre zarre ki yeh iltizah hai

“Is… Is that for me?”

Sanskaar was still not able to believe and Swara smiled… actually smiled shyly holding a bouquet of all the flowers she could find over there… including the wild flowers and she had somehow tied the whole thing using several sleek grass strands. And that gave her bouquet an intricate yet unique look.

Sanskaar couldn’t keep the goofy smile off his face on her sweet gesture and she kept smiling her eyes totally concentrated on the floor.

“Why?”, Sanskaar asked and Swara mumbled something.

“What did you say, Swara? I couldn’t hear anything.”

“T-Thank you!”

“Why?”

“For helping me and… you said you’ll take me to see the lan… lanterns”, she looked at him with anticipation and he smiled taking the bouquet in his hands.

“Yes, Swara. I will.”

= 💫 = 💫 =

Six months had passed and Sanskaar was once again back in town for Laksh’s and Ragini’s marriage. But more than that he had been excited to see ‘her’. He didn’t know why but he just couldn’t keep his mind away from Swara. It was as if just in a week, leaving her was like leaving a part of his own over there with her. He had no feelings as such for her but she was the first girl ever to have such an effect on him.

The moment he stepped inside the premises of Aashirwaad, his eyes started searching for no one but her. He just wanted to have a glimpse of her. Laksh, knowing the exact state of his best friend, whispered in his ear, “She’s in the backyard. Growing new flowers for your special bouquet.”

Sanskaar glared at him, “Shut up!”

“What?!” Laksh chuckled, “We all know you’re searching for her. By the way, you were right about her. She’s a really good care taker. She’s our very own personal bouquet designer.”

Sanskaar raised an eyebrow at his best friend and Laksh shrugged nonchalantly, “If you don’t believe me, then you can see for yourself. You know, she wants to study but she has refused to take any help from any of us. Maybe you can help her in that matter.”

“Really?! What does she want to study?”, Sanskaar was pretty surprised and Laksh smirked because he had expected the same reaction from him.

“She wants to do graduation. She had completed her twelfth before she was… umm… sold”, Laksh finished and Sanskaar simply nodded his head. On the lack of reaction, Laksh looked in the direction Sanskaar had his gaze fixed and found him, not so discreetly, staring at Swara.

One look of her and Sanskaar’s heart skipped a beat. She was watering the plants in the backyard with a small smile. The once pale skin of hers was shining like porcelain under the sunlight. Her eyes twinkled and her even fuller lips stretched into a breathtaking smile as their eyes met. And before Sanskaar could realize, his heart had already went out to reach her.

He was losing himself. She was winning him!

O re piya
Nazrein bole duniya bole
Dil ki zaban haaye dil ki zaban
Ishq maange ishq chahe koi toofan haaye

= 💫 = 💫 =

The time passed by quickly. Laksh and Ragini were married but one thing that Sanskaar had noticed was how happy Swara was whenever she was dealing with plants and flowers. She had gifted the newly wedded couple a huge bouquet with Swara’s special touch and both of them just couldn’t take their eyes off of the real piece of art in front of their eyes.

And finally the day arrived Swara had been waiting for. Today they would light the night sky with the lanterns again for celebrating autumn. She just couldn’t contain her excitement when Sanskaar asked her if she was free at night. He hadn’t forgotten it after all this while.

As they sat on a low raised cliff away from everyone else, first lantern rose up high and Swara exclaimed holding Sanskaar’s hand, “Sanskaar… Look!”

But all he saw were her twinkling eyes as she kept squealing with delight every time a new lantern rose up. With a small smile and bated breath Sanskaar held her hand tightly in his. This little girl even without realizing had started doing all sort of things that messed up his heart and when he just couldn’t suppress the urge, he leaned towards her and kissed her cheek catching her off guard.

Swara froze instantly and as she stiffened Sanskaar cursed himself, all set to embrace himself for a slap. For heavens sake she was six years younger to him!

He closed his eyes but they jolt opened instantly as he felt her hesitant lips on his own cheek. She kissed him too before turning to look at the lanterns again with a shy smile and even in the dark Sanskaar was pretty sure of the light blush covering her cheeks right now.

“Swara, will you do something for me?”, Sanskaar asked after a while and Swara nodded. He forwarded a key towards her and Swara scrunched her brows in confusion. The key was definitely not hers.

“What’s this?”

“I heard you wanted to study…”

“So, you’re giving me the whole college!!”, she cut his sentence midway in disbelief and Sanskaar chuckled seeing how her brain ran… in a wrong direction, obviously.

“I’m not a billionaire, Swara. So, no… it’s not the key to any college. This is the key to a shop.”

“What shop?”

“Your very own flower shop, where you can make your special bouquets and sell them. You can make some money with your own talent and then you can continue your studies.”

“What?!! No. No, Sanskaar... I can’t… take this. You have done… so much for me… I… ”, she stuttered. Yes, she wanted to study but not like this. She didn’t want to burden anyone with herself and this man right in front of her eyes had already done more than enough for her.

“Shh!”, not even a complete word from Sanskaar and Swara had already shut her mouth up. “Kitna bolti ho tum, Swara. Just listen to me first. Okay?”

She nodded like an obedient child and Sanskaar smiled, “This shop is rented. I’ll pay the rent for a while and when your business picks up you can return it to me with interest. Will that be fine?”

“But Sanskaar…”

“You said you’ll do it for me”, Sanskaar played the emotional card and Swara took a deep breath before nodding her head and taking the keys in her hand. The keys jingled and her face instantly lit up with the most genuine smile.

Chalna aahiste ishq naya hai
Pehla yeh vada humne kiya hai
O re piya haaye
O re piya hayee
O re piya

= 💫 = 💫 =

It took a year and Swara was the most famous florist of the town. Her incredible talent and unique designs reached to far off places, even outside the town, and after a year she had enough to join for college. She decided she wanted to study plants because that’s where her interest lied. Years passed and after every six months Sanskaar came home and took her to see the lanterns.

It was like their special thing!

And though none of them accepted but each of them had made a special place in the heart of other.

Piyaaa
Yehh piya

= 💫 = 💫 =

It was the final year of Swara’s graduation and she had never been so excited for Sanskaar’s return. He would be coming back today and she was all ready to give back all the money he had spent on her, or rather say her business. And more than that… she wanted to express her feelings for him. Deep down in her heart, she knew even he felt the same for her.

But that day when Sanskaar entered the rehabilitation centre, he had a very beautiful girl by his side. Swara’s heart sank as they together made their way to Laksh’s office. But Laksh was not there. He had gone to take a round around the rehabilitation center.

“Kavita, you wait here. I’ll go and look for Laksh.”

She nodded her head and Sanskaar left. Moments later, Swara gathered up some courage, took the envelope where she had kept the money and headed towards Laksh’s office.

“Where’s Sanskaar?”, she asked as she found no one else but Kavita sitting over there.

“Oh! He has gone to find Laksh”, Kavita said without giving her a single glance but just then something struck her and she lifted her head up, “Wait! Are you Swara?”

The way she took her name, disgust quite evident, made Swara flinch back. She nodded her head meekly without a word and Kavita scoffed, “So, you’re the charity case.”

“Char… Charity case?”

“Well, yeah! The one whom Sanskaar has been helping. Never mind, I’m Kavita. Sanskaar’s fiancée”, she stretched her hands towards Swara for a handshake but Swara stepped back. Her chest tightened with the pain and her grip on the envelope tightened even more. Her throat held something between a sob and a scream and without any single word she just turned around and ran… ran as far as her feet could take her.

She had lost him even without a fight as if he was never hers in the first place!

Nange pairo pe angaro
Chalti rahi haaye chalti rahi
Lagta hai ke gairo mein main
Palti rahi haaye

Le chal wahan jo
Mulk tera hai
Jahil zamana
Dushman mera hai…

= 💫 = 💫 =

“What. Did. You. Do, Kavita?”, Sanskaar was almost ready to pounce upon Kavita knowing that she definitely had something to do with Swara not present anywhere in the rehab. She shrugged nonchalantly and Laksh had to hold Sanskaar back for it wasn’t dignified of an army man to hit a woman. But when it came to Swara, Sanskaar had lost all his cool.

“Sanskaar… Relax. Why did you even bring her here?”, Laksh said holding his hand and Sanskaar swatted his arm away groaning in frustration, “She’s nowhere, Laksh. Nowhere.”

He held his head in both his hands and sat down on a chair with a thump. Seconds became minutes and then as if a miracle it struck him. Wait a minute!! He bolted up from his chair and ran towards the window.

“I know where she is”, he said and before anyone could ask anything he ran out of the rehabilitation center and into the darkness of the night.

= 💫 = 💫 =

Sanskaar sighed with relief as he found Swara sitting on their hill top gazing up at the lanterns. It was just… the twinkling of her eyes was missing this time and silent tears rolled down her cheeks. Without a word, he sat down next to her and Swara wiped off her tears hurriedly, “What are you doing here, Sanskaar?”

“Am I not supposed to be here?”

Swara chuckled humorlessly, “You should be with your fiancée right now. Not with me.”

“What fiancée?”, Sanskaar scowled and Swara raised an eyebrow at him.

“Your fiancée. The one whom you’re engaged to”, Swara said with certainty and Sanskaar’s scowl deepened, “I’m not engaged.”

“Wait a second… then that girl…”

“She lied to you Swara. Trust me she is the worst clingy type of person I have ever met. I would rather jump off this cliff than to get engaged to her”, Sanskaar shivered with disdain and Swara chuckled seeing his expressions. And that instantly lit up his face as well.

“What’s that?”, Sanskaar asked looking at the envelope and Swara forwarded it towards him, “It’s for you. The entire money you had spent on my business. But Sanskaar…”

“What?”

“You never said what would be the interest”, Swara frowned and Sanskaar smirked leaning closer to her, “You really want to know?”

Swara just nodded her head, not trusting her own voice because of the intimacy and Sanskaar smiled caressing her cheek and wiping off the remaining traces of tears away from her face. With yet another smile he leaned closer and Swara gasped as his cheeks brushed against hers.

And when he finally whispered in her ears, her entire world stopped, “Marry me!”

O re piya haaye
O re piya haaye
O re piya haaye
O re piya

“W-What?”

“I love you, Swara. Marry me. That would be my interest”, he whispered and her heart thumped crazily inside her rib cage threatening to fall out any next moment. And without any word she nodded her head as if it had a brain of its own.

Sanskaar pulled back with a goofy smile on his lips, “What was that? Is that a yes?”

“Yes, Sanskaar! I… I will marry you”, Swara replied breathlessly and Sanskaar leaned in once again, his warm breath fanning her face as he took in her serene features before smiling. With his lips hovering right above hers, he said, “A change of plan, Swara. I might want a little bit of interest right now.”

With that being said he seized the smallest amount of distance in between them caressing her lips with his own. But Swara pulled back in a moment and Sanskaar opened his eyes, “What? Is it too soon?”

Swara shook her head before smiling and she said what she had been planning to say for a while now, “I love you too, Sanskaar.”

With yet another smile, she wrapped her arms around his neck pulling him for another kiss and the thousands of lanterns rose up in the sky again marking yet another of their beautiful moments.
