Chapter Nineteen
I close the front door behind me and lean against it. My eyes are slightly wide and I'm shaking a little, but a huge smile is plastered on my face.
"Azari, Honey?" Jasmin calls as she gets up from the couch. "Are you alright?"
I flick my eyes towards her and nod slowly. "He kissed me!"
She squeals and rushes over to hug me. "Oh, I'm so happy for you guys! You're such a cute couple, and I bet the date was fantastic!" My smile drops shyly and she leads me over to the couch. "Tell me everything!"
I giggle at her enthusiasm. "Well it was a cute little picnic in the woods." She sighs in content, making me laugh again. "He brought a blanket and an assortment of food. It was really nice!"
She beams, "what'd you guys talk about? Wait, never mind, that's probably personal; I don't need to know."
I decide to just continue and not answer the question yet. I'm not sure if she knows about Bryce being my mate. "Well it was going great until an arrow landed on the basket." Her smile drops instantly, her expression becoming intrigued and fearful.
"Someone shot at you?" I nod and she gasps, grabbing my hand. "Who was it? We're they Wolves?"
I nod again. "It was a man and two wolves. They were definitely Weres. And then. . . they just attacked us."
Jasmin's eyes were very wide. "What did you do? Why didn't you run back here?"
I look down and fiddle with my hands, knowing I'm going to have to tell her everything or I'll be pestered for days on end. "I came clean."
She stills, thinking this through. Before she can say anything else, little footsteps run down the stairs and suddenly Jupiter is on my lap. "Hey, Buddy!"
He grins at me. "Ry, you're back!"
I giggle. "I am! I'm telling Jasmin all about my day." I kiss the top of his head, "I think it's time to tell her."
Jasmin sucks in a breath, and Cole speaks up — who I didn't even know was standing in the doorway with Mason next to him. "Are you sure?" He says, "you shouldn't feel pressured into this."
I shake my head. "I'm not. I showed Bryce today, not really by choice, but it was long overdue anyway. You have become our new family — you took us in out of pure kindness. You deserve to finally know everything."
I nudge Jupiter off my lap, "wanna show them?"
"Shift? Or powers?" He whispers, but everyone can hear him.
"Up to you, Bud." He beams and ushers Mason across the room. Mason looks at his father nervously, but shuffles across the room.
"It won't hurt," Jupiter tells him. He grabs the older boy's hand and his own begin to glow very subtly. After a few seconds, Mason sinks to the floor, his eyes droopy.
"What was that?" He slurs tiredly. "I feel half dead!"
Jupiter giggles and crouches down to grab the boy's hand again. Soon enough Mason's eyes brighten and he seems to float around the room.
"What was that?!" He squeals, making us all laugh.
"Energy." Jupiter answers simply. He spreads his palm flat and actual sparks ignite across his skin — some turn to little bolts of lightning as he extends his arm across the room. He's careful not to touch anyone or anything with them, and I'm impressed with how much control he has over his abilities at this age. "I can also move the earth." He says calmly. "But I won't, because the house might collapse."
Jasmin and Cole are staring at him in shock and Mason just looks plain amazed. I giggle and open my palm, releasing a small ball of red fire. I pass it from hand to hand, probably scaring Jasmin half to death!
"I know you've seen my powers before, and a little bit of Jupiter's. We've only been hiding what we are to stay safe."
Jasmin finally comes around and nods. "We understand. And we've actually had our suspicions and theories about what you are," she glances at her husband. "We just couldn't decide if we believed those Weres existed."
I look down again. "Go ahead and shift, Jupiter." I say, "keep yourself small."
He blinks at me, a little bit of fear in his eyes. "I don't know, Ry. I've never tried keeping myself little."
Mason holds up his hand. "Wait! You can control your size? Dude, that's awesome!"
I smile and place Jupiter on the couch. "Alright, I'll shift."
Cole and Mason walk over and sit on the couch between Jupiter and Jasmin. I take a deep breath and close my eyes, calling deep inside myself to Kenna. Soon, I feel the transition start. My arms form wings, my spine forms spikes, and my head becomes reptile-like. My skin becomes scaly and red, the accents across it turn black, and right before I'm fully changed, I stuff the growth to the back, keeping myself small. About the size of an overgrown lizard.
"I knew it." Jasmin whispers and I flick my snake-like tongue out, spinning in a circle for them to see. I flap my wings and Mason hops off the couch to come see me up close.
"Woah!" He says quietly. "You're an actual dragon!"
I flick my tongue out again and flap my wings a little, hovering a few inches for a second. When I land back on the carpet, I shift back to my human form, stumbling from the motion a little.
I look at Mason kindly, "yes. I'm an actual dragon."
"Wow!" Jasmin breathes while Cole asks, "so how come he can do the energy thing, but you can do fire?"
I fold my legs under me and sit down on the living room floor. "Where we come from, our powers aren't necessarily genetic. If that were the case, everyone would be bigeneri. Or hybrids."
"So there are different categories or something?" Jasmin asks.
I nod, "something like that. Everyone has a base element they are born with: Fire, Water, Earth, Air. However the qualities of those elements don't develop until the kid is a certain age; and it's not a set age, it's random. It's also usually when they shift for the first time."
"So you're Fire, right?" Mason's eyes are wide with admiration. "But then what is Jupiter?"
"Earth." My brother pipes up.
Cole looks as if he's trying to wrap this all around his mind. "But your powers. . ." He glances at Jupiter.
I smile and answer for him, "like I said, we all have a base element. Some elements have sub-divisions. Fire and Air do not. Water has one: Ice. Earth has three: Energy, Agriculture, Darkness."
"So if someone is Earth, they have all three?"
"Not necessarily," I explain. "Some can, yes, but many have only one; some have none. But if you are one of the subs, you also have the main element's powers. For Earth, that's quakes and terrain."
"That's what we felt when we first found you, wasn't it?" Jasmin lights up as she puts the pieces together.
Jupiter nods shyly. "I was showing Ry my control over my powers. I made the earth shake and then you guys appeared."
"What about your parents?" Jasmin asks, "I know why you left 'the Caves,' but what kind were they that led you two to become so different?"
I smile sadly as I picture my mother's bright red hair. "What I meant by it's not genetic, is that we don't get a mix of our parents. We take completely after one or completely after the other. Mother was Fire, like me."
"Your father was Earth then, right?" Cole asks, looking proud of himself for actually figuring something out with all the information I was throwing at them.
I shake my head and his pride falls, making me chuckle. "He was Water." Suddenly a series of memories with Father and Aislee flash through my mind. When they're gone, I remember how I saw her at school last week. I glance around the room, looking at all the windows. Is she here now? If she is, why doesn't she come see us?
"You alright?" Jasmin asks, climbing off the couch and across the floor to wrap me in a hug. I nod against her shoulder, unsure of what to tell her. "That was a lot for one day." She whispers, "you don't need to tell us anything else right now, maybe it's time to get some rest."
I don't really feel like I need sleep, but I don't argue. My mind is spinning as I hug everyone goodnight and stumble to my room. My heart pounds and Kenna enters my mind to warn me of something too late. I swing open my door and nearly jump out of my skin. Standing at the edge of my bed is my sister.
