RHAELLA TARGARYEN KEPT HER HEAD HIGH, walking through the red keep, her sworn guard protector following close behind her.
Rhaella was a young girl, but she was smart, incredibly smart for a girl so young. She wanted to go to the library—pick out a new book.
But the silver haired girl came to a holt, her eyes landing on her sister in law, cradling her now child in her arms.
Rhaella didn't think for a second as she made her way towards Rheanyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon.
"Sister, why on gods green earth are you not resting." Rhaella's worried tone hit the pair's ears, Rhaenyra softly smiling at her innocent sister. "You must be resting, sister."
"Your mother requested I bring Joffrey to her, dear sister." Rhaenyra softly explained to the young child, watching as the child's eyes remained on the baby in her arms. "Do not worry for me."
"Nonsense." Rhaella tutted, shaking her head as she moved to stand on the other side of Rhaenyra, holding onto her dress. "I must aid you, if that is what you wish, of course." Rhaella smiled up at her, Rhaenyra sharing a soft look with her husband as she nodded her head.
Rhaella grinned as she kept a gentle hand on Rheanyra's dress, leading her to her mother's chambers.
The trip wasn't long, and as Rhaella saw the doors to her mother's chamber, she quickly opened it, letting Rhaenyra walk in first, then following behind her and Leanor.
Leanor kept a hand on his wife's back, leading her towards Alicent. When Alicent heard their footsteps, she turned and looked over at Rhaenyra, noticing her eldest daughter sticking to her side.
"Rhaenyra." Alicent's tone was soft as she looked at the rough state Rhaenyra was in. "You should be resting after your labours."
"I have no doubt that you would prefer that, Your Grace." Rhaenyra smiled weakly, rocking her child in her arms.
Rhaella looked around, smiling at the maids as they moved around. "You just sit." Alicent insisted, nodding her head. "Talya, fetch a cushion for the Princess." Alicent ordered one of her maids.
"There's no need." Rhaenyra shook her head, persistent that she didn't need to sit down. Rhaella looked up at her sister, then to her mother.
"Nonsense." Alicent breathed out, walking towards the three as a maid grabbed a cushion for Rhaenyra. Alicent stared at Rhaenyra's child, watching as Laenor and Rhaella helped Rhaenyra sit down.
"What happy news this morning." Rhaella smiled at her father's voice, turning around as she saw him walk in.
"Indeed, Your Grace." Laenor smiled, nodding his head as Viserys walked in with a limp. Rhaella kept her smile, watching her father as he stood beside her, smiling down at her before turning to Leanor.
"Where is he?" Viserys asked, making Rhaenyra pass her child to Leanor, who carefully passed it to Viserys. "There. There he is." He softly said, Rhaella's smile never dropping as she watched the interaction, holding her hands in front of her. "A fine prince." Viserys said as he looked down at his grandchild. "You will make a fearsome knight."
"Does the babe have a name yet?" Alicent asked as she turned her head back to Rhaenyra. Rhaella looked up at her father and the babe in his arms, and her father caught her gaze, letting her look at the child.
Rhaella smiled, waving at the babe as it reached out to her, its small hand grasping onto her finger. Rhaella let out a quiet giggle as she looked up at her father.
"Joffrey." Leanor was quick to answer, nodding his head at Alicent as Rhaenyra softly smiled at her sister's interaction with her child.
Rhaella had always been soft with her children. And Rhaella had looked after her siblings multiple times.
"That's an unusual name for a Valaryon." Alicent remarked, raising a brow. Rhaella didn't understand the meaning of her mother's words, keeping her eyes trained on the babe, Joffrey.
"I do believe he has his father's nose." Viserys said, tearing his gaze away from his daughter and towards his eldest. "Don't you?" He spoke down to the babe.
"Dear, Rhaella." Alicent spoke up, making Rhaella look up at her mother with a smile, nodding her head. "Mustn't you be with your brothers at the dragon pit?"
"Oh, yes, mother." Rhaella nodded her head, smiling back down at Joffrey before letting go and bowing. "Congratulations, dear sister, My Lord." Rhaella smiled at Rhaenyra and Leanor before smiling at her parents and leaving the chambers.
Rhaella stood beside her younger brothers, hands clasped in front of her. She couldn't wait to see her dragon, Meraxes. Her dragon had hatched the day she was born, and she made sure to see her dragon every day.
She had already formed a bond with her dragon, since she was a child.
Rhaella softly smiled as they brought out Jace's dragon. The dragon looked around, its eyes landing on Jace, who grinned at his dragon.
Aegon yawned from beside Rhaella, making her nudge his arm, shaking her head. "Where are your manners, brother." She uttered in a soft tone, making Aegon roll his eyes.
Jacaerys stepped forwards, inching towards his dragon, as his dragon did the same. "Call Vermax to heel, Prince Jacaerys." One of the dragon keeper told the Velaryon boy. And he did as told, speaking to his dragon in High valyrian.
And Vermax listened. Rhaella smiled softly as Jacaerys' excited expression. Rhaella had blocked out the rest of the conversation, excitement bitting away at her. Her dragon was next.
Then, Jace turned to his dragon, grin on his face. "Dracarys, Vermax!" And on signal, Vermax breathed out fire, melting the goat they had brought in for Vermax.
Rhaella watched with a wide grin, watching as Jace turned to the four behind him, grin on his face.
"Princess." Rhaella turned as the Dragon keeper spoke to her, making her swap places with Jacaerys.
Vermax was soon taken away, and Rhaella excitedly held her hands together, seeing the familiar black and red scales of Meraxes.
Meraxes made a sound as she could feel Rhaella's presence. Rhaella chuckled as she recognised her dragons feelings. Meraxes was just as excited to see her, as Rhaella was excited to see Meraxes.
Rhaella stepped forwards, moving towards her dragon with a raised hand, grin on her face as Meraxes inched closer towards her, pressing her head in Rhaella's palm.
"Hey, issa hāedar." ( my girl ). Rhaella softly spoke, petting her dragon as Meraxes leaned into her touch. "Nyke've missed ao." ( I've missed you. )
After Rhaella and her moment with her dragon, she turned when she heard Aegon speak to Aemond. "Aemond, we have a surprise for you."
Rhaella frowned as she turned around and walked towards the group of boys, a frown on her face.
"What is it?" Aemond asked, hands behind his back as he stared at his older brother.
"Yes, dear brother, what is it?" Rhaella asked, sensing that her brother was up to something.
"It's something very special." Lucerys innocently said, looking up at Rhaella, then Aemond before jogging in the opposite direction.
"You're the only one of us without a dragon." Aegon explained to his brother, Rhaella watching carefully.
"Indeed." Aemond nodded his head, following Aegon.
"And we felt barely about it, so we found one for you." Aegon revealed as Rhaella raised a brow. Since when?
"A dragon? How?" Aemond also didn't believe his brother's words, looking up at his sister for guidance, but rhaella sent him a soft look, shrugging her shoulders.
"The gods provide." Aegon shrugged his shoulders as they stopped walking, looking down.
Rhaella shook her head as she watched Lucerys run up, a pig at his side with fake wings. She turned to Aegon, sending him a sharp look. She did not want Aemond to feel like a fool.
"Behold—"
"The Pink Dread!" The three boys said in unison before chucking.
Rhaella stared at Aemond with sad eyes, before turning to Aegon with sharp eyes. "This isn't a funny jest, brother." Rhaella hissed at Aegon, moving to stand beside Aemond. "How would mother react?"
"You wouldn't." Aegon shook his head at his older sister, Rhaella narrowing her eyes.
"You tend to forget, brother, I am her favourite, as well as Heleana." Rhaella hit his arm, making him hiss and hold his arm. "Need I remind you, you screamed like a girl once you first saw your dragon."
Aegon looked away, embarrassed as the Velaryon boys chuckled at her words. Rhaella sent a sad look towards her youngest brother. "Do not fret, you will claim a dragon, dear brother." She persisted as Aemond looked down at her, slowly nodding her head. Rhaella softly smiled at Aemond, squeezing his arm before turning to the rest. "Now, you boys mustn't act like babes." She looked at the remaining three. "Not everyone claims a dragon right away."
And with that, she left the boys to think about her words. Rhaella smiled at her sworn guard protector, letting him follow her out of the dragons pit and towards Heleana's chambers.
Rhaella softly watched her younger sister play with her bugs. Helaena had always had her strange fascinations, but Rhaella never judged. "Does this one have a name?" Rhaella asked, pointing to the spider in the jar.
"No." Helaena shook her head, holding a caterpillar in her hands. "I do not name them." she softly said as Rhaella slowly nodded her head.
"Can I name it?" Rhaella grinned, looking at her younger sister. "Please?" She put on a pout, tilting her head to the side as Helaena turned to her.
"If you wish, Ella." Helaena nodded her head as Rhaella quietly clapped her hands, turning to the spider with fascination.
"Meraxes, after my dragon." She grinned as Helaena softly smiled. "It's so cool-"
Both girls turned when the door opened, seeing their mother. "There you are, dear girl." Alicent sighed as she moved towards Rhaella. "Aemond told me what happened."
"Is he alright?" Rhaella frowned, looking up at her mother as Alicent nodded her head, stroking her daughters cheek. "I did tell Aegon off." She added as Alicent smiled, pressing a kiss against her temple.
"I know, Aemond was glad you did such." Alicent nodded her head as Rhaella grinned, looking up at Alicent.
"I will go make sure he is well." Rhaella stood, reaching out to squeeze her mother's arm. "He's just upset his dragon hasn't hatched yet."
"Not everyone is as lucky as you to have your dragon hatch the day you were born." Alicent softly said as Rhaella nodded her head.
"I'm glad Rhaenyra picked that egg out for me." Rhaella grinned, looking up at her mother as Alicent's face faulted, but smiled nevertheless. "I should go. Bye, Helaena!" Rhaella smiled at her younger sister, waving her hand as Helaena smiled back at her.
