Chapter 16: A Bond Forged in Fire
Huney and Meredith grow closer as they prepare for what lies ahead.
As the days pass, Huney spends more time with Meredith. They train together, and Meredith teaches him about the simpler, human side of life—one without gods, flames, or prophecies. Despite the looming danger, there are moments of quiet, where they both find solace in each other's presence.
One evening, as they sit by the remnants of the village's bonfire, Meredith finally asks the question that's been on her mind.
Meredith: (gently) "Huney... do you ever wish you were just like the rest of us? Human, I mean."
Huney, staring into the glowing embers, is quiet for a moment. His fire has always set him apart, made him different. But now, after everything, he finds himself longing for the connection that humans share.
Huney: "Sometimes. I was born in flames, raised by Ignivor, and my purpose has always been clear. But now, being here, with all of you... I wonder what it would be like to just be Huney. Not the child of fire, not a weapon, just... me."
Meredith smiles, nudging him playfully.
Meredith: "You're still just Huney to me. No matter what the gods say."
The two share a brief but meaningful look. It's the first time Huney feels like he belongs somewhere, not just as a protector but as a person. His feelings for Meredith begin to grow stronger, though he knows the challenges ahead may never allow them a chance at peace.
