Chapter One: The Grandfather
Years before the birth of Draupadi....
King Prihasta sat in his throne room. He attended to court matters as well as his personal affairs. He was already stressed as Panchal had become a huge kingdom admired by many. However along with the good came the bad. Many enemies sought their foot on Panchal. They wanted to conquer it and make King Prihasta their slave.
Now the king was getting old, I mean how much can a man take? He had to deal with matters of the kingdom as well as the fact that his queen was now almost 8 and a half months expecting. He had to be there for her as well as his people. After all, A king is like a father to the citizens of the kingdom. That was the first rule when sitting on the throne. Little did King Prihasta know that years from now, this rule would be forgotten by one of the most powerful kings in India. This king would fall under the spell of his sons, causing his own Granddaughter great pain.
As the king thought about all of the duties of a warrior and why he should continue to motivate himself to take on this stress and rule, a maid came in running. The look on her face made the king sit up abruptly.
"Your highness, I apologize for me running in like this without permission but the Queen is in labour!"
A smile brought itself up to King Prihasta's face. He had always dreamed of having an heir to teach all the rules of kingship too. Nowadays all of the kings wanted sons to adorn their castle and take over after them, but the Panchal King was known for his fairness between a daughter and a son. In his head, the king was hoping that his lovely queen would bear a daughter.
He quickly brought himself up from the throne room and ran to his queen's room. He paced and waited for the cry of his child. Finally, after what felt like forever, a maid came running out with a huge smile on her face.
King Prihasta knew right away that this had meant that his queen had bore him a son. He had tried his best to change the mentality of his people and get them to celebrate whether it be a boy or a girl. But what had been passed on from generations could not be easily removed. A frown would be where a girl was and a smile would be where a boy was. He shook his head and said, "My child is a boy I presume".
The maid replied, "Yes oh king! Your queen has proved her existence. She has bore you a son whose face is prettier then the moon itself!"
King Prihasta found himself mad. He replied, "How dare you assume the worth of my queen from whether she bares a son or a daughter? A women does not prove her existence by bearing a son, but rather she proves it by being a great mother to a son or a daughter. I am ashamed that my people still have this awful mentality. He dismissed the maid with a prized necklace from around his neck, as this was the tradition of warriors. He didn't want to listen to her apologies at that moment. He wanted to go see his queen and his new son.
He walked into the room and saw his Queen in tears. his heart broke at the sight. The queen spoke through sobs, "listen I know you wanted a daughter, so that you could improve the mentality between sons and daughters. I know you wanted a female queen to take place after you but I can't bear anymore children, my head nurse said their were some complications and therefore our son will be your only heir. I'm so sorry, I-"
He cut in abruptly, "Dear, why are you crying on such a great occasion. Yes I did want a daughter to improve society but that does not mean that I won't accept you or my son. I will love our son just as much as I would've to a daughter. My son will bring me pride. But do you know dear? I promise you that our son will have daughters of his own, and those daughters will bring him more pride then he could ever imagine."
The queen had stopped crying now as she looked at her husband with pride of her own.
He continued, "Our son will be a great king, undefeated by many. He will bring me so much pride. But my granddaughters will bring me even more pride then that. They will change history, I promise you. You and I will be proud grandparents! This son I name, Drupad"!
The entire kingdom fell into a blissful silence as they celebrated the birth of their new ruler.
