Chapter Fifteen: Doubles?

Present Day : The War

As Arjun walked over the body of the commander in chief of Panchal's body. His five brothers soon followed. He was really surprised at the amount of bravery she had displayed and it was weird because she reminded him of his own mother. His own mother had been widowed at such a young age and had been left to raise the five of them. His father's second wife, another mother to him had left the world as a sati. The degrading practice of a women burning alive on her husband's pyre fire.

Even though, he knew it was more of the guilt that had convinced Madri his step mom to give her life, it still wasn't right to see his youngest brothers Nakul and Sahdev grow up without their biological mom. Though his mom Kunti, had made sure that his youngest brothers were loved and never felt like they didn't have a mom, he knew that the death of his two parents is where all of there troubles started.

If his father had been alive, he would have more emotional support.

If his father had been alive, his mother would've been treated like the queen she deserved to be treated as and not as a widow.

If his father had been alive, the former King of Hastinapur Pandu was alive, his so called 100 cousin brother would know they had no right  over the throne and perhaps they would not be mental enemies.

He knew that that his eldest brother Yudhisther was the best next King but those 100 fools wouldn't accept it. All he hoped is that they would wake up soon and rule together because the last thing he wanted is a war to break out in his own family.

As he shook his head out of those thoughts, he turned his head back and turned to his brothers, "Brahta (Brother)". His elder two brothers Yudhisther and Bhima looked at him. He continued, "you handle these soldiers here, and I will go break the chakra war formation. My best guess is that King Dhrupad is in the middle of it. These soldiers won't take effort to defeat as their commander in unconscious."

Bhima gave him assurance, "Oh yea you go. I'll have all of them dead in two mins flat." Arjun chuckled at his brother's eagerness. Although he couldn't blame him. Having the strength of 10,000 elephants in your arms did often give you urges to break things. He looked for the approval of his eldest brother.

Yudhister sighed, "Don't you worry. We'll be fine. Go on, you are the only one out of us that can break the chakra formation. I will go free our other 98 brothers from the captivity of the soldiers."

Now Arjun sighed. He wished his elder brother had not been the son of Yama, the god of dharma. Then perhaps, he would disregard the fact that he was their cousin brother and leave those 98 morons to fend for themselves. After all it was them who taunted him and his brothers before leaving for war and warned  them not to participate in the war until they actually needed help. The 100 brothers were hoping that they would be able to gain an easy win and therefore win the throne. After all, their teacher Drona has promised that whoever brought Dhrupad to his knees would get the Hastinapur throne. He wanted Yudhisther to get it. He was the most worthy. He would make sure of it.

Arjun took out his bow and arrow and shot left and right, seating himself on a horse in the process. He quickly shot all of the soldiers in the first row of the chakra formation with ease. Now came the hard part. The part that even the best of archers could not figure out. He had to find an opening in the second row or the chakra would re-close trapping him in. He quickly circled the row finally finding an opening where the soldiers had slacked due to fatigue. Relieved he began making his way through the other rows and finally got to the middle.

He got of the horse, expecting to see the King of Panchal in the middle. But what he saw next, he was not prepared for.

The colour drained from his face when he saw that there was not one, not two, not three, but five Dhrupad's standing in front of him. How would he know who was the right Dhrupad? He could fight all five of them but if they attacked together he had no chance. Dhrupad was one of the most skilled fighters known in the entire world during that time and fighting five of him was no joke. Besides from all five of their stances he knew they all fought very well.

He didn't know what to do as the Dhrupads mocked him.

"I heard that the 100 brothers of yours got caught just by my daughter." said the first Dhrupad.

"And you think you will stand a chance against me, alone!" Laughed another.

"Fight oh third son of Pandu, son of Indra king of the gods." One taunted him.

"What happened you were the best archer-"

"STOP!" Screamed Arjun he needed to think clearly and their taunting wouldn't give him space to think. Out of anger he punched one of the Dhrupads making him fall to the ground, while the side of his pocket ripped open. Out of them five stones fell out. He suddenly reminded himself of  Krishna, his cousin, the King of Dwarka, the one man whom he respected more than anything. He had a flashback.

Arjun and his brothers were in the camp on the outskirts of Panchal, a day before they were to attack. It was nighttime in the moment. All of his brothers including the other four had fallen asleep and it was just him sharpening his arrows before war. He didn't like sleeping before a war, it always left him paranoid especially when so close to the enemy.

He sighed as the lack of sleep still gave him a headache. He wish he took some of his mother's magical pills of headaches before he left for war.

"Fighting a headache, Parth?" He snapped up, but quickly relaxed when seeing that it was just his favorite cousin Krishna who had addressed him by his favourite name.

"Madhav". Arjun smiled, using one of Krishna's nicknames. Arjun then got confused, "What are you doing here in the middle of the night?" He asked.

Krishna looking knowingly. "I thought you might need these five. He handed Arjun five stones. Arjun got even more confused, "Stones? Madhav we are fighting a war, not playing hopscotch!"

Krishna sighed. "Will you let me finish. These five stones are a lesson. They resemble the five of you brothers. Each one of you has a predominate quality. Yudhisther, the greatest follower of dharma, Bhim the strongest of you five. You, the best archer. Nakul, the handsomest. Sahadev, the smartest. Just like you five excel in those qualities everyone has a known dominant quality. You must look hard to find it because after you will be able to find their weakness.

Arjun then asked a question, "What's your dominant quality Keshav?" He looked down at the stone before hearing Krishna laugh. When he looked up, there was no one with him but his arrows. He quickly put the stones in his pocket as the sun had began to rise."

*End Flashback*

Arjun's eyes widened as he understood the lesson Krishna had been trying to teach him. Although there were five Dhrupads here, only the real Dhrupad would carry his dominante quality: his love for true justice. Like his brother, Dhrupad could not stand people giving out the wrong justice and as the stories said about him, this was the quality that had allowed him to acquire the throne from his father.

He quickly thew his weapons away. But kept his sword right in front of him. "Attack me now, he said to the five." He knew that the real Dhrupad would flinch because it was very unjust to attack a warrior without their weapons.

He saw that the fifth Dhrupad had done just that, from the corner of his eyes. As they all turned to attack him. He picked up his bow and arrow and shot four arrows pinning the fake Dhrupads to the ground.

He turned to the real Dhrupad. "Now let's fight", he smirked. Dhrupad raised his sword but with a flick of Arjun's arrow he was soon disarmed. Arjun quickly shot a special spell from his bow and arrows that turned into a rope and tied up Dhrupad. He took the counch from his belt and blew it signalling the end of the war as the King of Panchal had been captured.
