Homecoming Game

Chrom

I've never been the type to watch football.

I just don't see the appeal to it. Dad loves it and he likes to watch it with me, but all I do is sit there and pretend to know what's going on. I always found ways to get out of going to school football games by saying I have school work or some other event going on, but this week, I couldn't get out of it.

Surprise surprise: I was elected to be the male freshman representative on the homecoming court.

So now here I was: sitting in the chilly October weather at a football game. I was uncomfortable and freezing. Mom forced me to wear a fancy tuxedo for the event and it is not made of a very warm material. The rest of the homecoming royalty looked like they were having a blast; I don't know what they could possibly find fun about this.

I fidgeted with my sash and sighed. How long do these things last? I want to go home! Gods...this is humiliating! Being homecoming royalty doesn't really help this whole "Prince of the School" thing...

As I was moping in self-pity, the female freshman rep slid next to me. "You having fun?" she asked.

I turned to her. "No, not really."

The girl laughed and tossed her reddish-brown hair over her shoulder. "Wow! Someone's honest!" She held her hand out to me. "I don't think we've ever been able to properly introduce ourselves. I'm Katie."

I smiled and shook her hand. "I'm Chrom, nice to meet you." Wait a second... I brought my hand to my chin and thought for a moment. "You're in my Student Leadership class, aren't you?"

Katie winked at me. "Took ya long enough!" She laughed. "I sit right behind you!"

I laughed as well and facepalmed. "I'm so sorry! My mind has just been in shambles for the past few days so I've been distracted," I said. "Once again, I'm sorry."

Katie dismissed me with her hand. "It's alright." We stayed silent for a few minutes. "AHEM! So, did you know that we're the only two freshmen in our class?"

"Hmm, no. No, I didn't. Interesting..."

Katie waited for me to say something else, but I remained silent. "W-well, at least you can take comfort in knowing that we're in the same boat!"

"Uh huh."

I didn't want to come off as rude, but I honestly wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone right now.

All of a sudden, a loud buzzer went off; signaling the end of the second quarter.

"Thank the gods... It's almost over!" I went to stand up, but Katie stopped me.

"Hey, Chrom. I need to ask you something."

I sat back down. "Sure, what is it?"

Katie opened her mouth to speak, but the tapping of a drum stole my attention. I looked back to the field and saw that the marching band was heading out. I smiled at focused completely on them.

"Ooh! Can it wait?" I requested. "I've always liked watching the marching band perform. My older sister was in it when she was in high school, so I like seeing what they can do!"

Katie groaned and leaned back. "Sure, whatever..."

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen!" The announcer's voice boomed over the loudspeaker. "Please welcome Ylisse High School's marching band!" The crowd in cheered. "This evening, our band will be playing a tribute to video games; starting off with the Main Theme of The Legend of Zelda!"

The band began to play and move, and I was immediately hypnotized by the performance.

"Chrom, are you listening to me?" Katie impatiently tapped my shoulder.

I turned back to her. "Huh? What's up?"

Katie glared and crossed her arms. "Well, as I was saying: I think that you and I should-" She was interrupted by the roaring cheers of the crowd.

I snapped my head back to the field. "Aww! I must have missed some cool move! Damn!" I sighed. "Can you please wait until the halftime show is over, Katie? I really want to watch it!"

"But-grr... Fine."

"Our second selection is Dragonborn from the game Skyrim!"

As I watched the band perform, someone caught my eye... One of the girls in the Color Guard looked oddly familiar... Who is that...? I SWEAR I've seen her before!  She had light-brown hair that was tied into a high ponytail with a blue bow and was wearing simple show makeup. I squinted to try and get a better look at her. It looked like she had blue eyes, but I couldn't tell from where I was.

"Our third selection is the Main Theme from the Kirby series!"

Who is that girl... My attention was completely on her, now, and I think many others as well.

She was smiling the biggest smile of anyone else on that field. I looked around at the other flag twirlers and noted that some of their smiles looked forced: not hers, though. She was genuinely happy. She moved with so much grace and purpose. Even though the song was upbeat and playful, she managed to turn it into the most elegant performance I've ever seen.

Why...why am I so drawn to her... She's doing the exact same thing as the others! I tried to watch the other flag twirlers, but my attention kept directing itself back to her.

"Our last selection is the Main Theme from Pokémon series!"

As I was watching the girl, a sudden realization hit me. Wait...is...is that Anna?! Brown hair...blue eyes... No. No, it can't be her. The Anna I know would NEVER wear makeup or smile that much! And she's constantly tripping and twisting her ankles, there's no way she could do all of that.

The song ended, and I was on my feet cheering and applauding. The drumline began to play the cadence, and the band marched off the field. "Man! That was awesome!"

"AHEM! Can we talk, now?" Katie asked as she impatiently tapped her foot.

I sat back down and smiled. "Sure, what's up?"

"Are you going to homecoming?"

"Yes, why?"

She flipped her hair and smirked. "Well, as the freshmen royalty, it's only fitting that we go together; don't you think?" she asked.

A bit of blush crept upon my cheeks. "Um, well..." I straightened my tie. "I-I'm going with my friends, sorry."

Katie rolled her eyes. "Whatever. You can meet me there and be my date, got it?" The look she gave me told me that she wasn't going to take no for an answer.

Gods...why is this so awkward?! "Katie, I'm flattered, but I barely know you," I said. "You're more than welcome to join my group, but-"

"For the love of Naga, Chrom!" she groaned. "Stop being so awkward and accept! C'mon! It'll be fun!"

I stared down at my feet. "I-I still don't know..." I mumbled.

"Look, we don't have to be all romantic about it," she said. "You don't even have to get me a flower or anything. I just think that it would be cute if we went together." She gave me puppy eyes. "And I really want to go with someone! I want someone to make me feel special!"

I sighed and gave in. "Alright, fine. We can go together," I said.

Katie beamed at me and flipped her hair, again. She does that a lot... Well, so does Anna. But the way Anna does it is sassier and cuter... Wait, what? "Yay! I'm so glad!" she exclaimed. "I'll meet you at the dance, then!" And with that, she scooted away from me and began to talk to one of her friends.

"That was...odd..." I shook my head and got up. "I need something to eat..." I pushed my way out of the stands and made my way to the concession stands. I saw some of the marching band members on my way and I congratulated them as I passed. I scanned the crowd for that girl. Who the heck is she? Why can't I stop thinking about her? She looked so familiar! I ran a hand through my hair. I need to stop thinking about her... I also need to stop thinking about Anna. There's no way that that was her! Well, maybe I should ask her... ...Actually, that's a bad idea. She'll probably bite my head off if I think that she does something like that.

"Oh, well... Whoever that was: you were amazing. I just wish I knew who you were..."
