A New Friend

Chrom

"Emm? When's this girl supposed to be here?" I asked my sister as we waited in the Great Hall.

"Yeah! I'm getting bored!" Sully huffed.

Emm laughed. "Soon, little ones! Be patient!"

Sully and I groaned and waited some more. Then, the doors opened. A man with light brown hair strolled in, a warm smile on his face. Following him was a little girl in a pink dress. She had the same brown hair as him and brown eyes. She was hiding behind her father and trembling.

"Lady Emmeryn! It is an honor to see you!" The man said with a bow.

Emm smiled at him. "Likewise, Lord Campsley," she replied. "I see you brought your daughter with you."

Lord Campsley looked down to see his daughter hiding. With a laugh, he stepped aside. "This is Sumia, my pride and joy. Forgive her, she's a bit shy."

Sumia waved nervously. "H-hello..." Her voice was quiet.

"We're delighted to see that you both have arrived safely. If you would like, my little brother and Lady Sully can show Sumia around the castle?"

Lord Campsley bowed. "That would be wonderful." He bent down to the girl. "You go with Prince Chrom, alright? Be good."

Sumia nodded. "Y-yes Father..." She nervously walked up to us and didn't say anything.

"Hey! I'm Sully!" Sully exclaimed, putting an arm around Sumia's shoulder once we were away from everyone else.

That made her flinch. "H-hi..."

"Er, Sully, we don't want to make her uncomfortable," I said. Sumia looked up at me, wonder in her eyes.

"Y-you-, um, you're Prince Chrom..." She fidgeted with her hands.

I smiled. "Yep! But you can call me Chrom. I don't like titles."

"Yeah! Besides, the only title this weirdo gets is chump! He sucks at sword fighting!" Sully barked as she punched my side.

"Hey! Give me some time to practice and you'll be eating those words!" I retorted.

Sumia laughed. It was quiet, but it was a laugh. "A-are you two always like this?"

Sully rested her elbow on my head. "Yeah, when the adults aren't around."

I shook her off and glared. "For now, yeah. I have to go to school in a few months," I sighed. "These are my last few months of freedom."

Sumia played with a strand of her hair. "O-oh, I see..."

"Why don't we go to the gardens? That's my favorite place in the castle!" I suggested.

Sumia's eyes lit up. "Sure!"

...

I was supposed to marry her? She's so shy! Did Father even get a chance to meet her? I don't know how this works. I watched as Sumia showed Sully how to...pluck petals off a flower? I'm not really into that girly stuff. I'll just watch. Still...she's really nice. I don't think I'll ever fall in love with her, but I can see her being a good friend!

"Gah! These dumb flower fortunes are out to get me!" Sully threw the stem of a flower on the ground. "None of them have been good things!"

Sumia laughed. "I guess Lady Luck isn't on your side!" She turned to me. "Would you like to try?"

I shook my head. "Er, no thanks!"

"I'M GOING TO PLUCK THESE FLOWERS UNTIL SOMETHING GOOD HAPPENS!!!" Sully yelled, plucking a fistfull of flowers from the beds.

Sumia giggled and stood us, dusting off her dress. "I think she'll be at that for a while." She smiled. "What do you like to do for fun?"

I looked up at the sky and sighed. "I like to play with my baby sister and read to her," I said. "I also like sparing with Sully and walking around the gardens."

"I see. That's cool!" It was silent, save for Sully's groans. "Um, Father told me that we are supposed to get married..."

My heart lurched. "Um, yeah..." I cleared my throat. "W-well, we're not! We don't have to! Emm said that I don't have to get married if I don't want to, and I don't want to!"

Sumia looked hurt. "O-oh..." She clenched her fists. "Well, ok! I don't want to get married if you're not happy!"

I nodded. "Ok! Let's just be friends!"

"Yeah! Friends!"

*****

The mystery girl is revealed. I wanted to add little Sumia in here cuz why not? Forgive me for my absence, I've had so much going on. School is driving me nuts, theatre is taking up a lot of my time, keeping up on my writing schedule, and I'm also learning how to drive so that's stressful. I promise that I will do my best to write everything in time. Thank you so much for reading and look forward to reading more!
