Flight
Sometime before chapter 6. Anna (Pre-relationship)
"No. Absolutely not."
"But, Chrom!!!! I'm perfectly capable of flying!"
"I don't care! I'm not going to allow you to go up in the air on one those things!"
"Grr! That's not fair!" I dug my foot into the ground and faced away from him. A few moments ago, I told Chrom about my desire to try flying on a Pegasus. Naturally, I expected him to be supportive of my wish (he is the greatest best friend in the world, after all) but he was totally against it!
"Pout all you want, Anna! I'm not letting you ride a Pegasus!" Chrom firmly said.
I clenched my fists into tight balls and looked down to hide my tears. "Why are you being like this?!" I shouted. "You're always so supportive with every one of my decisions! Why don't you believe in me to do this?!"
He let out a deep sigh and leaned on the table. "It's not that I don't believe in you... It's just...hard to explain..."
"UGGHH!!!"
I turned sharply and stomped out of his tent. "Anna, wait!" he called after me.
I ignored him and kept walking. That jerk! That stupid jerk! Why is he acting this way?! Is he hiding something from me?! I growled in frustration and kept walking.
"I can't believe him! I just want to try something new! Is that too bad?! I swear he's gonna-AH" I collided headfirst into something and fell to the ground.
"Ah! I'm so sorry!" Sumia frantically apologized, helping me to my feet. "I didn't see you coming! I'm sorry!"
I dismissed her with a wave of my hand. "No, no! It's my fault! I wasn't looking where I was going!" I laughed nervously. "I should be the one apologizing! I'm so sorry, Sumia!"
Sumia smiled at me. "T-thank you, Anna!" she exclaimed. "...Hey, you look pretty mad. Is something wrong?"
I groaned and crossed my arms. "Ugh! It's Chrom! We just fought, and I'm still really salty about it!"
Sumia's eyes widened with shock. "Really?!" she squeaked. "But you two never fight! What happened?"
I sighed and shook my head. "I want to learn how to fly on a Pegasus, but Chrom won't let me! And he won't tell me why!" I complained, beginning to feel a bit better having ranted.
"Oh, that's all?" she asked. "Well... What's stopping you from learning anyway?"
I looked up at her. "Huh?"
"Well, Chrom may be our commander, but he can't tell us what we can and can't do in our spare time!" she smiled. "I can say that I'm going out for a fly and I'm taking you with me! It's as simple as that!"
"R-really?!" I blurted in shock. "You'd do that?!"
"Of course!" Sumia clapped her hands in excitement. "It'll be fun! I promise!"
I grinned widely at her. "Thank you so much, Sumia! You're such a good friend!"
A bit of blush crept up on her cheeks. "Oh, it's really nothing!" she said shyly. "L-let's go! Lovebird is waiting!"
"Alright!"
...
"Ok! So, do you have the basics down?" Sumia asked me as she adjusted me to the saddle.
I gripped the reins and nodded. "Yeah! It's just like riding a horse, but faster and I need to hold on tighter!" I stated.
Sumia smiled and pet the mare's mane. "Good! And don't forget to always be looking where you're going!" she said. "Now, just promise to be careful, and don't go too far or high! Just one or two circles around camp should be enough!"
I nodded once more and let out a breath. "Ok, then... Here I go!" I clicked my tongue and kicked the mare's sides, making her take off.
The sudden momentum change surprised me as she took to the sky. I closed my eyes tightly in fear and gripped the reins until my hands hurt. After a few moments, I opened my eyes and inhaled a sharp breath as I realized what was happening. I'm flying... I'm actually flying!!! I smiled and marveled at my new perspective of the world. Everything looked so small...so far away... It was incredible. I continued to be in a daze for what seems like hours...until a voice broke my trance.
"Anna!!! Watch where you're going!!!" Sumia cried.
I shook my head and looked down again. I was too high.
I began to panic, and I made the Pegasus descend, losing control, and holding on for dear life.
Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods...! My fear only made things worse. Lovebird began jerking from side to side, making me lose balance. Once my feet fell out of the stirrups, I knew I was screwed.
I fell of the Pegasus with a scream, and everything seemed to go in slow motion. ...This is it. I should have listened to Chrom... I'm such an idiot.
Just as I was about to hit the ground, something caught me and broke my fall. We tumbled to the ground and laid there for a few moments; the only thing that could be heard was our heavy breathing.
"Are you alright?" Chrom's voice spoke.
My breathing hitched. "Y-yes..." I slowly nodded.
Chrom sat up with a sigh and helped me to my feet, keeping his hand on my wrist and holding it tightly. "You and I need to talk. Right now," he growled, anger and worry burning in his gaze.
I looked down and closed my eyes. "Yes, sir..."
"Oh, my gods! I'm so so so so so sorry!!!" Sumia exclaimed, running up to us. "I'm so sorry, captain! I shouldn't have let her up in the air! I'll take any punishment you give me!"
Chrom brought his free hand to his forehead. "Just... Not right now, Sumia..." he sighed. "You're not going to be punished; Anna is the one who has to deal with consequences." I blushed in shame and tried to hide my tears. "Just never let this happen again, Sumia."
Sumia bowed her head and turned away. "Y-yes, captain..."
"Let's go." Chrom pulled on my arm and dragged me into his tent. He looks furious... This can't be good... He let go of my wrist and took a deep breath, preparing his words. What he did next shocked me.
I expected him to yell at me and tell me how stupid I was, but instead, he wrapped his arms around me and began silently sobbing. "Are you sure you're alright?" he whispered.
"Yes... I am, th-thanks to you..." I said, confused.
"Nothing's broken?"
"Not to my knowledge..."
"You're not in pain?"
"I'm still a little sore...and it's kinda hard to breathe when you're hugging me so tightly...!"
He still wouldn't let go. "I'm glad..." He held onto me for a few more minutes. Eventually, he decided to let me go. "I-I'm sorry, Anna... I just... I was just so worried about you..."
"...Chrom? Why didn't you want me to fly?"
He looked like he didn't want to answer. That he just wanted to keep me away from the skies and never speak of it again. He pursed his lips into a thin line and let out a breath. "...When I was younger – well, I was 9 and Lissa was 5 – Lissa wanted to ride a Pegasus, like how you did. I told her that it was dangerous and that she was too young to fly. She didn't listen, and she did it anyway. She was only 2 or 3 feet off the ground when she fell off! Although she wasn't that high...She managed to break her arm! She was in so much pain...It hurt me so much to see..."
"...So that's why..."
"That's why I didn't want you to fly," Chrom said firmly, taking both of my hands. "I didn't want to see you in pain. You're inexperienced, and you can't control a Pegasus your first go. I knew that you would fall... If the situation were different... If we were back in Ylisstol or there were more experienced fliers around...I would have let you go... But right now..."
I shook my head. "I get it. I totally get it," I said. "I'm so sorry for worrying you. I really am. I'll never do it again, I promise."
"No! I-I don't want you to give up your desire to fly! That's the last thing I want!" he blurted suddenly. "I just want you to do it when you've had proper training."
I smiled at him. "I think I can live with that."
Chrom sighed in relief and embraced me once more. "Good. I think nearly falling to your death is punishment enough, so I'll let you off the hook this one time," he sighed. "But if I ever see you doing it again, I won't be as easy on you!"
I laughed and leaned onto him. "Ok! Ok! I get it! I won't fly without training again! Gods, you're such an overprotective dork!"
"Whatever!"
