Chapter 28 - Falling
ROSE'S POV-
As if in slow motion Lily's body flew backwards. Her scream echoed through the forest. But thing thing was, I couldn't tell where hers ended and mine began. I'd sunk to my knees with Scorpius right next to me. A malicious laugh was to be heard right before a pop that signified Lucius's exit. Barely aware of my actions I stood up and bolted out of the tent straight to the corpse of my cousin. Her eyes were wide and her eyebrows raised. The look someone gives right before they scream. Throwing myself across her body I sobbed.
She was still warm under mine. She felt like she could be alive. But there was no breath. No sound. Just death. If we had been just a little bit quicker. If we hadn't of argued. If we hadn't. If we hadn't. If we hadn't. It echoed through my brain again and again and again. Her life was in our hands and we let it slip right through our fingertips. Barley even seventeen. So full of life. I'd killed it. I'd killed her.
I couldn't stop crying. Every time I was close to stopping I remembered that she hadn't really betrayed us. She hadn't sold us out and wasn't planning on it. And the family. How would we ever tell them? There was no way to do say it nicely. "I'm sorry, Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny. Your daughter is dead and it's my fault." No, I couldn't say that. I can't say anything for that matter. Because Lily Luna Potter is dead and it's because of me. I must have layed on top of Lily, crying and crying and crying, for hours. Because when I finally sat up the sunrise was bright enough to blind me. And I had no idea where Scorpius was. I needed to find him. But I couldn't leave Lily. Not thinking straight I picked her up bridal style and took her with me. Setting her outside of the tent I walked in to see Scorpius in the same crouched position as I'd left him in. His shoulder were shaking and I knelt down next to him.
He sat up and wrapped his arms around me. His touch was enough to bring my tears to bay and once again, I too was sobbing. What felt like hours later I sat up and Scorpius did too. My lip was trembling but I was able to manage 5 words. "I want to go home." He nodded. "Me too." He said. Wordlessly we packed our things and stood outside next to Lily. She was no longer warm, but hard and cold. Reaching down I slid my hand over her face to close her eyes.
"Are we just going to apparate home with her?" I asked. "I can't think of anything else to do." He said. "Me neither." I said in bitter agreement. "It's going to be hard. They're all going to hate us." I whispered feeling the tears threatening to leak from the corners of my eyes. "No they won't. But yes, it will be hard." He said. "Potter Manor?" I asked. He nodded. Reaching down he picked up Lily with ease and I grabbed onto him. We apparated and with a 'pop' landed in the living room. It was only Alice who was sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket sipping a cup of steaming tea. When we landed she screamed.
Knowing what was about to happen I started to sob again. I pulled my knees to my chest not wanting to see what was about to happen. I felt like a small child, shielding my eyes from the bad parts of the movie. Peeking through my fingers Alice had ran out of the room leaving Scorpius standing up with a dead Lily in his arms and a blank look on his face. In rushed Ginny and my mum and they both let out blood curdling screams. More screams followed and my tears came faster and faster. Seconds later my mum and dad's arms were around me tightly and they were both crying. "Rosie." My mom cried into my hair.
Meanwhile Ginny lay over Lily the same way I had been earlier. Draped over her torso sobbing uncontrollably. By this point most of the family was squished into the room. Harry was next to Ginny sobbing right along her. James stood white faced and frozen while Vic had her arms around Teddy as he cried into her shoulder. As if in slow motion I watched a crippled Al reach up to punch Scorpius. Accepting the blow to his face he staggered backwards but didn't defend himself. Al threw another punch and Scorpius doubled over in pain. Shrugging my parents off I rushed to his side. "Stop it!" I screamed. The whole room seemed to freeze. "It wasn't his fault. It was mine." I said suppressing a sob. "No it wasn't. Don't listen to her. She's not thinking straight." Scorpius warned as he wiped the blood from underneath his nose.
"No, it's my fault. I should've been quicker. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Lily." I said as I sunk to my knees. Nobody moved to touch me. "I'm so sorry." I cried over and over again. Eventually my body began to give out. It couldn't handle all of the different emotions anymore. I begun to see dark spots. And the spots grew larger and larger until the darkness overcame me.
*****************************************
When I woke up I felt warmer and more comfortable then I had in months. I didn't exactly know where I was but I knew as soon as I opened my eyes everyone would ask questions and I just wasn't prepared for that. I wanted this moment of peace to last. Letting the warmth envelop me I let out a sigh. I was home again. Barely opening my eyes I took in my surroundings. I was in my dad's old room at the burrow. Someone must of pushed two beds together because Scorpius was asleep right next to me. I looked down to see his hand entwined with mine. Looking to my left I saw my mum and dad's heads bent together in conversation. Astoria was sitting next to them but she was slumped against the wall sleeping.
Nobody had noticed that I was awake yet so I shut my eyes and tried to fall back asleep. Feeling Scorpius stir next to me I sleepily turned to face him. I opened my eyes just in time to see his fluttering open. We didn't even have to say anything. I knew exactly what he was thinking. "It was my fault." He whispered. I shook my head. "No, it wasn't." I said desperately. He sat up abruptly and I could feel our parent's gazes on us.
"I told you no, we couldn't go out to save her. If I hadn't stopped you from running outside then she'd be alive. It's my fault. Can't you see that?" He yelled as tears poured down his cheeks. "Lucius changed his mind on the time. There wasn't anything we could of done!" I yelled back tears streaming down my own face. "I let her die, Rose. My best mate's sister. And she hadn't even betrayed us again. I never forgave her." He stuttered. I reached up and pulled him down to my level then wrapped my arms around him.
"It's ok. We're going to be ok." I repeated softly. We stayed like that for a while. I hardly even remembered that our parents were in the room watching our every move. Once I did remember I let my tight hold on Scorpius fade away and we both face our parents. "We need to talk to everyone." I said as I reached for Scorpius's hand. Silence followed my command.
"Don't you think it would be easier to talk to just us? It would be more private." My mum suggested carefully. I shook my head. "No. We're only explaining things once and everyone deserves to hear it. More than you can imagine has happened in the last 6 months. You all need to hear everything." I said. "What do you mean? We all just thought that you were all in hiding." Astoria said, speaking for the first time. Scorpius looked at eachother and laughed out loud.
"Ministry break in." I said. "That was you?" My dad asked with a look of complete and utter shock. I nodded. "The ministry complaint about files from the restricted section of the library missing." Scorpius said. By now all three of their jaws were dropped. "Is that it?" My mum asked meekly. I shook my head. "No, not even the half of it."
They all looked petrified on what was to come but kept their mouths shut. My mum and Scorpius's left and it was just us and my dad. He looked nervous. "Shouldn't you be rounding up the rest of the family?" I asked. "Well, yes. But I need to ask you two something." He said as he looked down. "Ask away?" Prompted Scorpius. My dad took a deep breath. "Did either of you kill anyone? Because if you did, I'd want to know. You wouldn't get arrested or anything because it was out of defense. But Rose, I'm your dad, and Scorpius, you're kind of like another son." He said as his ears went red. "Anyways, I just want to know because I care. And I know what it feels like and I could maybe help. Because I've been where you were before." He said. His whole neck was red and he was looking at the ground.
My dad is the best father anyone could ever ask for. He's always there when I need him and he loves me no matter what. But he's never been an emotional guy and I knew that him saying Scorpius was 'like a son' took a lot out of him. Without warning I threw my arms around his neck and squeezed him tightly. He squeezed back and I sat back down. "What was that for?" He asked. "I just really missed you. And to answer your question, no, we didn't kill anyone." I said. "At least, not intentionally." Scorpius added. My heart dropped. I'd forgot all about Lily.
My heart just couldn't take it. Tears welled up in my eyes I wiped them away furiously. My dad must of sensed something coming because he got up and left. Scorpius put his arms around me and sighed. "I shouldn't of said that." He said. "But you're right. It's my fault. I shouldn't of believed that she'd really betrayed us. I should of seen that she'd really changed." I said tears rolling down my face. Just then the door was opened by a teary eyed Vic. She had Claire on her hip and she looked exhausted. I'm sure Teddy wasn't doing well either. "Everyone's in the other room waiting for you two. Just come when you're ready." She said before she walked out.
I wiped away my tears and stood up with my hand in Scorpius's. If I was going to relive the last six months I was glad I'd have him by my side.
Hey guys! So I really, really liked this chapter and I hoped you all did too. I guess my writers block kind of went away because it was fairly easy to write this all of this which is great. Please keep commenting, voting, and reading. I love you all so much! XOXO
