Chapter 21 - The Potter Residence
SCORPIUS'S POV-
"So you're saying that-"Al prompted. "I'm saying that Lucius was able to pinpoint our location because we were writing letters to you." I said. He groaned. "This is all of our fault." He said. "No it's not!" Rose defended. "It's ours. We should've known better than to send letters like that. It was stupid." I finished for her. "We figured out Lucius was using the letters to find us so we stopped sending them." I said. "So, that's why you haven't been answering any of the other letters?" Asked Alice. "Other letters?" Asked Rose. "Yeah. The ones where we say what happened to Al. And the ones from your parents. They've been really worried." She replied. "We'll talk about my parents in a minute. Back to the letters. If we're not getting them then Lucius is. You need to tell everyone to stop sending them because it's only feeding him more information." Rose said.
"Why can't you talk to them yourselves? You can just stay the night here and tomorrow we'll get the family together. You can explain everything!" Al said. Rose and I exchanged a look and I knew she felt the same way as me. But there are things that need to be done. "We can't." I said. "Why not? You're making everyone freak out!" He said angrily. "That's not my fault! We're trying to protect everyone." I said. "Yeah, well it's not working." He said gesturing to his face and leg. I got to my feet in rage. "It's nobody's fault that you tried to single handedly fight Lucius. It was stupid and look where it landed you." I spit. "Are you serious? At least I tried to do something! All you two seem to do is sit around all day and wait for Lucius to find you!" He said. Alice looked at him with pleading eyes and Rose used her arm to brace me. "Stop." She whispered. Ignoring her I kept going. "You think what we're doing is easy? We started with no ideas. None. We had to start unraveling this long and twisted mystery that you don't even know the half of by ourselves. And thank god you weren't there because you'd of gotten the rest of our legs blown off!" I yelled.
The second I said the words I knew I'd gone to far. "Get out." He said through gritted teeth. "Al, please. Let us finish telling you what's happened." Rose begged. "I want him out of my house." He screamed. His rage had caused the blanket to lower down by his knee. And that's when I saw it. His leg, or lack of. I wanted to be sick. "He doesn't deserve this." I thought angrily. Al must of caught me staring because his anger only grew. "Think this is funny don't you, Malfoy? "Oi, look at Potter. Went and got his leg blown off didn't he?" Don't you think I've heard enough of it? I'm going to be reminded of my mistakes every day. I was the idiot who thought he could battle Lucius. I get it. I get it so you don't have to rub it in." He spit. It was silent and I didn't know what to say. Al was glaring at me with such a look of anger it made me regret saying anything at all. And then there was Rose. She looked pretty pissed as well. But she also looked scared. Scared that something would get too out of hand.
Not knowing how to apologize I continued with the story. I told them all about Pheronixon and how nobody seemed to remember it. I told them of the time turner and how Andi Meriplous had just been a pawn in Lucius's game. I told them of the explosions outside of the tent and how we received the letter with a picture of a dead looking Al in it. I told them everything and damn did it feel good. The listened patiently and when I finished it was silent. "You've told me everything. Now get the hell out of my house." Al spit. My heart sank but I nodded obediently. I know I'd screwed up so without even a single goodbye I climbed out the window waiting for Rose. I heard her shuffling around and knew she was hugging them both. "Please tell everyone that we're ok but not to owl us. Say we don't know when we'll be back but we love them all. And hug my parents and Hugo for me." She said shakily. I could tell she was trying not to cry. They gave murmurs of agreement and she climbed out the window next to me . Lifting the muffliato charm she clasped my hand and we disapparated to the motel.
We landed with a 'thud' and Rose turned to me. "How could you of said any of that stuff to him?" She thundered. "How can you agree with him? He was saying we haven't been doing anything!" I yelled back. "It doesn't matter. He lost his leg Scorpius." She said with a shudder. "And? I know that it's awful but we shouldn't have to act like he's made of glass. The things he said weren't ok either and he needs to acknowledge it." I said harshly. "I could care less if Al acknowledges his mistakes. That's up to him. But you on the other hand I care about and that's only because I'm married to you. The things you said to him were unacceptable. You're going to find a way to apologize." She demanded. "I can't! Neither of us want to risk Lucius seeing us." I said. "Tell that to Al's permanently disfigured face." She muttered. "What was that?" I asked even though I knew full well what she had said. "Nothing. I'm going to bed." She said. Climbing into bed completely clothed she pulled the blankets up to her chin and turned away from me.
"Come on, Rose. Don't be like that. Can we talk?" I asked. Silence. With a sigh I turned out the light and climbed into bed facing away from her. A few minutes passed and then I heard her get up. She flicked the lights on and sat down next to me. "My mum always told me that when I got married I could never go to bed angry. Takes a major toll on the relationship." She said quietly. "We've been going to bed angry for weeks." I said. "Exactly my point." She said and I understood what she was getting at. Ever since we'd started to look for Lucius we'd started fighting. More fighting led to less talking and that wasn't good.
"I miss you." She said softly. I pulled her into me and buried my face in her hair. "I miss you too. And I will find a way to apologize to Al. I shouldn't of said a any of those things." I admitted. She was quite. "Can we stop fighting?" She asked. "Yes, please." I replied as I kissed her hair. In one fluent movement she flipped around so she was flat against me. "Kiss me." She murmured. So I did just that.
My hands snaked around her waist and hers flew to entangle themselves in my hair. Our lips met and it was a blissful oblivion. It reminded me why we'd fallen in love and all at stake seemed to fade away. No more Lucius, no more pain, just Rose. The thing that mattered most
We pulled apart breathing heavily. "I love you." She said. "As I you." I replied. I waited until she was asleep to leave. There was something I'd been meaning to do and now felt like the perfect time. I left a small note that said I'd be back soon but I knew she'd still be mad. She'd want to go with me but she couldn't. I needed to do this for myselves. Apparating to the Potter residence I stood next to the window. It was simple. I'd go in and confront her, make sure she's still on our side.
Lately I've been having dreams about Lily working for Lucius again. I have a bird's eye view of a room where they meet and discuss things. I can't hear anything they're saying but I know it's not good. There's a very real possibility that it is just a dream. But there's also the possibility that it's not and I'd rather be safe than sorry. I haven't told Rose any of this because it'd just worry her even more.
Perched outside Lily's window I thought about what I was going to say to her. It's around 3:00 A.M so I knew she'd be asleep. Knocking on her window I waited. A few minutes later it flew opened and she squealed. "Scorpius!" She flung her arms around my neck and I hugged her awkwardly. Rose might of forgiven her but I hadn't. "What are you doing here?" She whispered. "I'll explain in a minute. Can I come in?" I asked. She nodded and moved out of the way. "Muffliato." I whispered. I moved and sat on the end of the bed. "Where've you been? Everyone's worried sick." She said. "I can't say but trust me, we're ok." I replied."Where's Rose?" She asked. "Sleeping. I didn't tell her I was coming here." I said.
"Why?" She asked. "Well, I guess I'll start from the beginning. I've been having these dreams. I haven't told Rose about them yet. In them you're working with Lucius. I just wanted to clarify that they're not real. Just to be safe." I added. She looked at me strangely. "Do you really think I'd work with him again? My relationship with everyone in this family is practically torn to shreds because of what I did!" She cried. I could tell I'd upset her. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply anything. Of course I don't think you'd go back to work with him! I just thought I'd feel better if I heard the words of confirmation coming from you." I said. She sighed. "No, I get it. What I did was unforgivable. I'd be nervous if I had dreams like that too so I don't blame you for coming to ask me. But I'm glad you asked instead of jumping to conclusions." She said.
I didn't know what to say. We sat in an awkward silence for a few more minutes. "I should probably go. But before I leave. Do you have a piece of parchment and a quill? I need to write a note." I said. She nodded and gave me the supplies I needed. Quickly I jotted a note to Al apologizing for what I'd said. I folded it and handed it to Lily. "Would you mind giving this to Al?" I asked. "Of course! What's it for?" She asked. "I umm said some things I shouldn't of and I needed to apologize. When you give it to him be discreet. I think I should go. Thanks, Lily." I said. I lifted the muffliato charm and climbed out of the window. "Bye, Scorpius! Tell Rose I said hello." She said. I nodded and apparated with a 'pop'.
When I landed Rose was sitting on the bed with her knees to her chest. When she saw me she threw her arms around me. "Are you ok? What happened?" I asked quickly. "I'm fine but where the bloody hell were you?" She asked worriedly. "I had to run an errand. Didn't you see the note?" I said. "Yes, but do you know how easy it'd be for Lucius to force you to write a letter and then take you?" She asked with tears in her eyes. "I didn't think of that." I said guiltily. "Exactly. Where did you go?" She asked. "I went to see Lily." I said "Why?" She questioned. Figuring I'd tell her everything I took a deep breath. "I've been having dreams of her working with Lucius. I just wanted to confirm that they weren't real." I said.
She hit my arm. Inhaled sharply. "What was that for?" I asked incredulously. "It was for your stupidity! I just can't believe you didn't tell me." She said. "I didn't want to stress you out!" I cried defensively. "Stress me out?" She scoffed. "What's so stupid about that?" I asked. "We're in this together, Scorpius. You have to tell me everything. Is there anything else you've been keeping from me?" She asked angrily. I thought about how I'd been forgetting things. I looked at her and she knew. "There's something else isn't there." She accused. "Well, yes. But I-" She cut me off. "But what? You didn't want to "stress me out?" She mocked lividly. She knew she was right. I hadn't wanted to make her any more anxious than she already was.
"What is it, Scorpius? What have you been keeping from me?" She yelled. "I've just been forgetting things. But it's not a big deal, I swear." I said desperately. She looked up at me with big, angry eyes. "I'm sure you've noticed. But it's just little things. I always remember a few seconds later." I added hopelessly. "I've been nothing but honest with you. I trusted you. But here I come to find you've been keeping secrets. You don't do that when you're married. I just thought our relationship meant more to you than that." She said as her voice cracked. I winced because she was right. I hadn't been honest. But I had to prove to her that I'd been trying to do the right thing.
"Rose, you have to understand. I was just trying to help you." I said. "So you say. But if you really cared than you would tell me things. And you wouldn't just leave me with a note. I'm leaving." She said as she turned around. She was stuffing things into one of our bags and I could hear her muffled sobs. "No! You can't leave." I said, tears gathering in my own eyes. She turned to look at me, her bag now stuffed and slung over her shoulder. "I won't be able to find you!" I . "Maybe it's for the best." She said. "What happened to us not fighting anymore? We were supposed to do this together." I said. "I thought so too." She said quietly. "I love you. Don't leave me." I begged. She shook her head and then she was gone.
