Finnian actually was with John when he died. Finnian had been a soldier in Alexander's battalion during the battle of Yorktown but left for South Carolina halfway through the battle, only to arrive right on time to see John get shot. He quickly made his way to his beloved, and begged him to stay, for once in his life letting his collected facade dissipate as he watched the life drain out of his lover's body. He was so heartbroken afterwards that there had been many a night in which he would hold a gun in his hand, debating ending himself. He never did, but rather died of pneumonia many years after the war had been won.
