Chapter 7: Instruments And Shrines

FLASHBACK, ONE YEAR AGO

"You got into another fight?!" Harley exclaimed when Hunter came to lunch with bandaged hands, yes both hands.

"No," Hunter answered.

"So, your knuckles are just bleeding for no reason?" She asked sarcastically.

"I fell down," He simply said.

"On your knuckles?" She asked, trying to hold back a laugh.

"Well look at your knee," He said, gesturing to her bruised knee. "You must have been in a fight."

"I tripped over and landed on my knees and not on my knuckles like you did," She answered, and grabbed his wrist. "Let's go to the infirmary, and stop acting like a weird bad boy."

"Don't girls like a rebellious guy?" He smirked.

"Oh gosh, you've been reading too many Wattpad stories!" She muttered. "I like a good guy, maybe a guy that can play an instrument and is smart."

"Hmph," Hunter grumbled.

***

Psh, I'm just doing it because I'm curious.

Hunter slowly held the violin his father had lent him. His father used to play the violin a few years ago but now he has abandoned it. Hunter figured it could start using it.

He then grabbed the bow and started playing a few discordant notes.

"What are you doing?" His mother asked as she walked in the room, blinking at the sight of Hunter.

"Mom!" Hunter said and put down the violin.

"When did you start liking instruments-?" His mother said, in a state of surprise and incredulous.

"I'm just curious," He shrugged. "Could I do some violin lessons?"

"Who are you? You can't be my son." His mother asked. "You are too rough to be playing such an elegant instrument."

"Please?" Hunter asked.

"I'll look into it," His mother said, clearly disturbed.

Yes!

"Anyway, I just wanted to tell you Harley's here," His mother said.

On cue, Harley busted into the room, wearing a brown sweater and a white skirt.

"Good after-" She then blinked at Hunter and the violin. "What."

"Harley, so-" Hunter was about to say when Harley grabbed the violin, as if the violin would instantly break from his hands.

"Why are you playing a violin?" Harley asked.

"I just like it," Hunter answered.

"But you never liked instruments," Harley blinked.

"Well, I changed!"

"What are you up to?" She asked, uncertain.

"I'm serious!" He shouted.

"Are you doing this because I said I liked someone that plays an instrument...?" She asked, and Hunter turned pink.

"What nonsense is that?!?" He asked, trying to sound offended, but the pink on his cheeks remained.

She laughed. "AHAHAH IT IS!"

"NO ITS NOT!" He argued.

"Gee, Hunter," She said, placing the violin down and touching his shoulders with both hands. "No matter what, you shouldn't change yourself for someone. Think about it, if they truly liked you, you wouldn't have to change."

She scrunched her eyebrows. "Whoever does that to you will have to deal with me!"

"You are too kind to stand up for someone," He pointed out.

"No!" She exclaimed, offended. "If it concerns my best friend then I will. Remember, it's us against the world!"

"Ew, don't go around saying such corny things," Hunter muttered.

"Nah, I'll stick with it," She laughed.

***

Harley dreamt she was in a beautiful garden full of roses and sakura leaves were dancing around her.

I'm so excited to see you again. A voice said.

"Who are you?"Harley asked, looking around.

Time will tell, darling.

***

Harley then woke up, back in her bedroom. She looked around frantically and took a few deep breaths.

What was that?!

"That doesn't seem like a coincidence anymore..." Harley said.

She sighed and looked at her clock. It was 5 am. She then stumbled out of bed and grabbed a white chiffon dress from a closet and clipped a white rose pin on her head. She quickly rushed out of the house and walked to the one place she hoped to get answers.

I dressed up for the utmost respect for you, Goddess Vaella.

She stood at the shrine and bowed.

"Goddess Vaella... you are the one that created these signs. Why don't I have a soulmate? Am I just unlucky?" She asked.

Suddenly, she heard a pair of footsteps walk into the shrine. She turned around and saw a girl with blonde hair ringlets and perfect makeup, her cheek had the symbol of the moon like Hunter. It was Arya.

"Oh!" Arya cried. "Sorry to disturb you, I didn't know someone would be here at this time."

Harley turned pale, unsure how to process the sign on her face.

"You didn't disturb me, don't worry," Harley finally replied with a smile.

Wow, she's really gorgeous, she's like an angel! Arya thought.

"Yeah... I've got something to think about," Arya mumbled.

"And what is that?" Harley asked.

"Uh..."

"Pardon me!" Harley quickly apologized. "I didn't mean to act nosy, you do whatever you want."

Talking to a stranger who I'll probably never meet again might be nice. Arya thought.

"I've had some trouble with my soulmate," Arya admitted, looking down, brushing away her blonde hair.

Harley sighed. "This world can be really complicated."

"It is," She answered. "My soulmate is hung up on someone else."

"That must be horrible," Harley replied."But does he or she know you guys are meant to be? No matter what?"

"He does but he keeps denying it, the girl he likes must be amazing,"

"But you are his soulmate!" Harley exclaimed.

"And he hates that," Arya answered.

"Well, maybe you guys can't love each other now, but maybe in the future," Harley said, trying to comfort her. "The idea of soulmates is that they stand by you through everything, understanding and connecting to you. Maybe now isn't the right time."

"I can't do that while he likes someone else, I just feel like I'm forcing him," Arya mumbled.

"Give him some time," Harley said with a smile. "You guys are meant to be together, either today or 5 years from now, you and he will always be connected."

"Time shouldn't matter," Arya said.

"Fate is a mysterious thing. Don't worry, you should just look at your sign, that's a bond."

I should give him some time... I can't rush this. Arya thought.

"Why are you here?" Arya asked and Harley's eyes darkened.

"My destiny is a mystery," Harley explained, looking away. "A mystery that won't ever be solved until my last breath."

"You haven't met your soulmate yet?" Arya asked.

"T-there's quite a lot of people in this world..." Harley answered, her tone faltering.

"Well, he or she is a lucky person!" Arya exclaimed.

"Aww, Nah," Harley replied, blushing a little. "What would you do if you didn't have a soulmate?"

"I would be lonely, I guess,'" Arya answered, thinking about it. "Honestly, a soulmate doesn't have to be a partner the way I think it is. It can be a friend too. Without this person, I would just feel I'm missing something."

"Ha... yeah," Harley mumbled. "Your trouble with your soulmate seems large."

"They could be better but I don't mind," Arya said. "I'm kind of jealous of the girl that can make him go crazy like that."

Arya sighed. "I hate being a second choice. Since I knew about the sign, I was so happy being someone's first choice. Ever since elementary school, I've walked on the grass next to the sidewalk. I've always been the odd one out on a ride and I've been left out in conversations."

"I...I thought soulmates would be a beautiful experience..."Arya softly said. "Could someone really be willing to die for me? I can barely convince anyone to hang out with me. I... just want to be seen and heard, but it isn't realistic for someone like me."

"If it's tomorrow or many years later, one day you will meet someone that will make you realize nothing was ever wrong with you," Harley answered, breathing a sigh. "And when you do, you will realize your worth. You might not even need someone to realize this."

Harley smiled. "You should work on your self-worth because the only person that will be with you until your last breath is... you. And I know you can do it."

"T-Thank you..." Arya murmured. "It's getting late. I should get going."

"Goodbye," Harley replied, waving.

"I owe you," Arya finally said and walked away.

Arya kept walking until the wooden bridge that was there before you came to the shrine. Arya turned around.

She disappeared. Arya thought and then smiled. Maybe she was an angel.
