Hush Now

I just stand there. Unsure how to react or move in a way that won't immediately lead to death. The room is still. No one is moving. Slade's eyes are going back and forth from Katey to me. I can feel my heart hitting against my chest. I can hear my blood rushing in my ears. I can't stop looking at the katana, knowing too well that he won't hesitate to put that through us.

"Katey," he growls, "come here." I look at her. She doesn't move, not an inch. I can see her swallow. She shakes her head slightly.

"No," she murmurs.

"What did you just tell me," her father demands. I can see her take a deep breath.

"I said no. I won't obey you," she says, determination stronger than the fear.

"Then you will beg to end like your brother," he states, beginning to walk towards her. I expect her to do something, to prepare to fight or to run but she just stands there, waiting for him. She lets him get within three feet of her and then she backflips farther away from him. He continues to march towards her and she repeats this pause and then flip pattern. She's leading him away from me, I realize, giving me a chance to continue deactivating bots. I wince when I hear a clang. Slade must have hit a bot when trying to hit his daughter. Oh God, that means he got close enough to try and hit her. I hear a grunt and turn around. Katey had been thrown to the ground but is quick enough to flip back up to her feet and there's the horrible sound of the blade meeting the ground where she just was.

I almost scream when I hand grabs me from behind, a gloved hand covers my mouth. I throw an elbow back and hear a pained grunt.

"Easy little bird, it's me," a voice whispers, a very familiar voice. I feel like crying. Damian! The hand is removed and I turn to him. I open my mouth to speak but I can't get any words out. I don't know what to say to him first. I don't figure it out before I hear the clicks and beeps that mean the bots are coming to life. My eyes widen.

"There's still too many for us", I rush. "There's only three of us and so many of them left."

"You really thought I would come alone," Damian smirks. That's when I hear it. The sound of batarangs hitting metal. A rush of relief fills me. The room is filled with noise and I briefly see Batman. The flip of his cape as he moves. Damian is trying to move me, backward, towards the door.

"No!" I shout. "I can't leave her. She's going to need help!"

"Who," Damian asks confused. I search frantically. I see arrows embedded in walls and know that Green Arrow and Speedy must also be here. I finally see her, through the smoke that's begun to fill the room from bots being set ablaze or blow to pieces. She's against the wall, Slade closing in. She uses the wall to spring at Slade and lands a kick to his head. My fear spikes as I see him move like it was nothing and grab her leg before she can land, using it to throw her against the wall. "Phoenix," I hear Damian say into his com. "There's a girl at the east side of the room fighting Slade, she's gonna need help."

I move to head in their direction but bots begin closing in on Damian and me; we are forced to focus on fighting our way through them. They seem unusually easy to fight, the biggest challenge being the number of them and the fact that you have to hit certain spots to take them down. I only see glimpses of Slade and Katey, Phoenix, my brother Tim, has joined them. He fights alongside her without question and they seem to fight well together despite never setting eyes on one another before.

Tim gets knocked to the ground. A bot grabs at Katey. Slade sends his blade down towards Tim. Katey slips the grip of the bot. She sends herself at Slade's legs, using her body as a projectile. She successfully knocks him off balance and the blade misses Tim's head. Sparks erupt from the blade clashing with the ground. A bot blocks my view and nearly takes my head off in my distraction. The next I see of Katey makes my heart stop.

Slade stands above her. She's crashed to the ground on her knees. I don't understand why but then I see it. A bloody katana sticks out of her. It went through the right side of her chest, the blade now sticking out near her shoulder blade. No. No no no. Not like this. Slade twists the katana and then yanks it out of his daughter. Blood quickly begins to darken her clothing. He kicks her the rest of the way to the ground. Phoneix is there quickly but Slade has disappeared into the shadows. I don't remember moving but the next I know is that I am kneeling over Katey. Blood pools around her and her breathe rattles. A gurgling sound escapes her. I don't move, my hands hovering above her. Someone says something. A voice that sounds like it's underwater.

"Robin!", Phoenix shakes me. "Try and stop the bleeding. Flash will be here any minute, just try and stop the bleeding and keep her still. Do you understand?" I nod my head and press my hands to the wound in her chest. Phoenix defends us from the bots near us, unable to stay with me. Katey's mouth moves and I can tell she's struggling.

"Katey, don't try and talk ok? It's going to be alright," my voice cracks.

"I tried," she tells me. It comes out broken and almost silent.

"Hush," I tell her gently, "I know. You did so well. You're going to be ok. We're going to take care of you now."

A hand grabs my shoulder gently. I follow the arm up to see Flash.

"I've got to take her now," he says gently. I nod my head. He gently scoops her into his arm and is gone before I can blink. I can't move. I can hardly breathe. What if she dies? What if she never gets the chance to know anything good?

"Robin," a voice says quietly. I blink. The room has gone quiet. Batman kneels in front of me. I feel his hands on my shoulders. "It's going to be alright. The bots are taken care of. The girl is being taken to Seattle Grace, they won't leak any of this." I find myself unable to speak so I just give a quick nod. Batman, Bruce, my dad, someone I thought I would never see again, takes me into his arms, lifting me up. He carries me out of the room. I can't take my eyes off the puddle of blood until we round the doorframe. I'm carried through the maze that kept me trapped in here. I can feel tears on my cheek as I see the night sky, a breeze bringing the fact that I am crying to my attention. I'm put down in the batmobile. Bruce gives me a while to gather myself as he drives, I'm guessing to Seattle Grace.

"Who is she," he probes gently. I swallow.

"You can't judge her. You have to promise not to. She saved my life. You have to," I'm cut off.

"Dickie, we aren't going to hurt her or anything. She just fought Slade and kept Tim from getting his head impaled," Jason tells me, his voice unusually gentle. I turn and look in the back seat. All three of my brothers are squished together back there. I hadn't realized any of them were in the car.

"Her name is Katey," I say, my voice tight and quiet. "She's Slade's daughter." There's silence except for the sound of my blood rushing in my skull.

"Slade has a child," Damian breathes.

"Fuck," Jason exclaims. I feel my head nodding before I actively try to move it.

"He had a son too. When I first got there. His name was Dylan," I say, throat tightening and more tears threatening to come.

"What happened to Dylan," Tim asks. I close my eyes.

"He tried to save us, Katey and me, he tried to get us out. He betrayed Slade. And Slade killed him, just like that. Like he wasn't flesh and blood. He can't be human," I begin to ramble. Jason puts his hand on top of my head.

"Little bird you need to calm down," he whispers. I nod and he keeps his hand there until we get to the hospital. Thirty minutes. A thirty-minute drive to the heart of Seattle. That's how close to civilization we were. I'm guided, still unable to really focus, by my brothers to an observation area. The door is still closed when we get there. Flash stands in front of it, preventing our entry.

"She's in surgery," he informs us. "The doctors rushed her to the OR. Her lung collapsed and she's lost a lot of blood. They don't know if she's going to make it." He looks at me, "I don't know if it's a good idea to watch the surgery".

"He can see, he needs to," Jason speaks up before I can. Flash opens the door and I move to the glass that looks over the operation. Katey is on the table, wires, and tubes connected to her. Doctors and nurses surround her, blood on their gloves. There's so much blood. I look at the heart monitor. Watching the line go up and down.

"Pressures dropping," I hear someone say.

"She needs more blood," another says.

"We're losing her," the first says again. My eyes dart to monitor. The line goes flat.
