Chapter Ten "Mr Mechanic"

We walked for about an hour. My legs were still sore from walking so long yesterday, but it was easier to manage on a full stomach.

At this rate, I'll have my summer body by the end of the week.

By the time we arrived at the mechanic's it was already four in the evening. We were cutting daylight close.

The shop looked like it was in better shape than Jeff's Auto Shop, which I was enthusiastic about. I hoped we'd have better luck here than there. The building was smaller than Jeff's, but newer looking. There was a black truck sitting in front of the garage, the tires dirty with sand. There was a sign that said AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP in big red letters above the doors.

The four of us walked inside, the door hitting a small bell hanging from the ceiling. The room looked bigger on the inside than it did on the outside. There were different cars around the place, some hanging from a contraption that lifted them off the ground, but all of them seemed to have a problem. One looked like it was crushed by a steamroller. There was a desk on the far wall ahead of us and there was someone sitting behind it.

"Excuse me?" Abby tapped the bell sitting on the desk.

The guy behind it was leaning back on a chair, his feet sitting on the desk. He had a Playboy magazine in his hands as he chewed on a toothpick. He was wearing a navy blue jumpsuit with a name tag that read Greyson on it. He couldn't be much older than me, probably between twenty and twenty-two.

He looked up, his eyes falling on me immediately. They roamed me up and down, taking in my characteristics; I shifted my weight to my left leg.

"What can I do you for, sweetheart?" He smirked, putting his magazine on the desk and dropping his feet on the floor.

"Our car broke down and we need someone to fix it." Abby told him, his eyes moving to her at the sound of her voice.

"What happened to it?"

Abby scoffed. "If we knew, we wouldn't be here, now would we?"

He rolled his eyes at her.

"What kind of car is it?"

"1960's pickup truck?" Nick answered him and his eyebrows shot up.

"Whoa, seriously? Where'd you get one of those?" Greyson's eyes fell back on me for a reason I don't know.

"We're renting it from a guy in Reno. Can you just fix it?" Owen spoke up and Greyson rolled his eyes.

"Fine, but it's going to cost you." He told us.

I dug into my back pocket and pulled out the wad of cash. "How's one-fifty?"

His eyes fell on me and he smirked. "That'll do." He stood up as I counted out the money.

I handed it to him and stuck the fifty dollars back into my pocket for safe keeping. He counted it out, licking his finger before flipping through the bills.

"All right, where's the car?"

I look at Abby and she looked down at the ground.

"It broke down a few miles back."

Greyson sighed and sat back down in his chair, lifting his feet back on the desk as he grabbed the magazine.

"Can't help you."

"What? We just have you over a hundred bucks, why can't you fix it?" Abby cried.

"If it's not here, how can I fix it?" He shrugged.

"Don't you have a tow truck you can go pick it up with?" I asked him and he looked up from his magazine.

"Yeah, I could." He said with a smirk, looking back at his magazine. "But it'll cost extra."

I sigh and pull out the remainder of the money Mrs McNeil gave us.

"All I have is fifty bucks." He stood up and took the money from my hands, putting his magazine back on the desk.

"That'll do." I rolled my eyes at his arrogant attitude and crossed my arms over my chest. "But someone needs to come along to show me where it is."

"I'll do it." Nick volunteered but Greyson shook his head.

"No, I want her to come with me." He nodded his head towards me with a wicked smirk.

"No way." Nick started to shake his head.

Greyson shrugged. "Then no deal, have a nice day." He says as he sits back down.

"Okay, fine." I said quickly before he could sit down and he smirks.

"Dylan-" Nick starts, placing his hand on my shoulder, his eyebrows furrowed towards each other.

I smiled. "I'll be fine, Nick. I can protect myself."

"All right, sweetheart, let's go." Greyson looked at with me a smirk as he grabbed a set of keys off the desk.

"We'll be back soon, just wait here." I tell the others and they nod but I can tell that Nick was still worried.

I followed Greyson out the back door where a tow truck was parked. I got into the passenger seat as he got into the driver's.

"So, why me?" I asked him as he pulled the truck into the road.

He smirked and glanced at me. "Why you what?"

I roll my eyes and cross my arms over my chest. "Why did I have to come along with you?"

He leaned back against his seat, his arm sitting on the steering wheel lazily. He always had that stupid smirk on his face. It was cocky and arrogant, like he had me in the palm of his hand. I already knew he had girls trailing behind him wherever he went and it just inflates his ego.

"What, you don't want to be alone with me?" He glanced at me again and I scoffed, my heart stopped for a second. "You look familiar, have we met before?"

"Is that one of your lines?" I raise my eyebrow at him and he laughs,

"No, I'm being serious. Are you a stripper?"

My eyes almost bulged out of my head, my jaw falling open.

"Oh my God, are you serious?" My cheeks filled with heat and I hid my face in my hands.

He glances at me again, but his smirk was gone and replaced with a raised eyebrow.

"What? Are you not?"

"Jesus, no. That's incredibly rude."

"That's a compliment sweetheart."

I took a deep breath in to suppress the anger rising in my chest.

"You're disgusting, I can't believe you. And don't call me that." I lean back against the seat and turn my head to look out the window.

"I know you from somewhere but I can't figure out where." I heard him say and I roll my eyes as we speed through the desert.

"I promise, we've never met before."

"I don't know," He said with uncertainty. "You live around here?"

"No, I'm from Ohio." I told him as we passed a rock I remembered walking by. "Turn left here."

He did as I told him and turned left down a dirt road we followed to get to the mechanic's.

"Oh," He strung the word out knowingly. "So you guys are here for summer break?"

"Something like that," I said, turning to look at his stupid smirking face. "Not that it's any of your business."

"No no, of course not." He shook his head but the smirk still sat on his face. "First time around here?"

I turned my head back to look out the window, watching the diner speed past us.

"Yeah."

"Enjoying it so far?"

"No, I find the people here to be quite supercilious, actually." I turn back to look at him to see his eyebrows furrowed.

"Super what?"

"Mouth breather." I mumble and roll my eyes.

"Mouth breather? How old are you?" He laughed and I couldn't help the tugging on my lips.

Silence fell between us.

"So, is that guy your boyfriend?" Greyson asked me.

"Who?"

"The guy that was like 'Oh Dylan, I cannot let my beloved leave my side to get into a car with this handsome devil. He will surely steal you from me.' and you were like 'oh Nick, I could never love anyone but you'." He mocked in a loving high pitched voice, smirking at me.

"First of all, he never said that and second of all, I never said that and third, no. He's not my boyfriend."

"Oh, so there's an opening?" He glanced at me and I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah, if you were the last guy on Earth." I scoff, shaking my head as I look back out the window.

"Hard to get, I like it. But you don't have to try so hard, sweetheart. I'm already interested."

"You revolt me." I've lost count of the amount of times I rolled my eyes at this guy.

He smirked in a response.

"There it is." I sat up at the sight of the car. I never thought I'd be so excited to see this hunk of junk.

Greyson pulls up in front of the tuck and parks before stepping out of the car. I follow his lead as he walked over to the truck.

"The hell happened here?" He exclaimed when he opened the hood of the trunk and saw the oil everywhere.

"Nick tried to fix the car himself-"

"Is that why he looks like he was rolling around in an asshole?" He looked back at me and I nod. He shook his head, turning back to the truck. "Idiot."

I rolled my eyes and cross my arms over my chest.

"All right, this'll be an easy fix. I just need to get this thing back to the shop." He dusted off his hands and turned around to face me. "I'll need you to help me hook it up to the truck."

I nodded and followed him to the back.

~ ~ ~

"And you're sure he didn't try anything?" Nick asked me for the hundredth time and I chuckled.

"Yes! Now stop pestering me about it. Why do you care anyways?" I smile, my head tilted up to look into his eyes.

He looked to his left and I noticed his cheeks were turning pink.

"Just making sure you're safe. We don't know anything about this guy." He told me and I nodded as if I believed him.

"I can hear you, you know." Greyson called from where he was working on the car just a few feet away.

I rolled my eyes.

"I don't remember inviting you into the conversation."

"Well, it was about me so I think it gives me a free pass." He smirked and nodded his head before turning back to the car. He was holding the hood open with his left hand as his right hand did something with the engine.

"Are you almost finished? It'd be nice to leave beside the sun goes down." Abby stood up from the bench next to the doors and walked over to stand by us.

"Chill out, I'm almost done." Greyson turned around to tell her and his eyes fell down to something on the ground. "What happened to your shoes?"

"Oh shut up." Abby turned back around and sat next to Owen. who was sleeping, on the bench.

"We really need to get him to a hospital." I mumble to Nick and he nods, the two of us watching him.

"What's wrong with him?" Greyson asked when he glanced at Owen.

"He has a concussion."

"Damn," Greyson mumbled as he did something to the engine with a wrench. "There's a hospital in town you can go to."

"We don't have any money." I told him. "You took all of it."

He chuckled and I knew he had that stupid smirk on his face.

"Not my problem." He shrugs, turning his body around so his back is leaning against the car. He wipes his oil spotted hands with a dirty rag.

"You are the most disgusting person I've ever met." I shake my head, my body shivering in anger.

He smirks and winks at me, causing my body to revolt.

I'm not going to lie, he was attractive. Probably one of the most attractive guys I've ever seen in my life; Hotter than Calvin Klein models with his chiseled jaw and sharp cheekbones. Even through his jumper, I could tell he was athletically inclined. His eyes were brown like warm chocolate cake. His hair was a really dark shade of brown, almost black but not quite. It was cut and styled so the front of it could swoop up if hair gel was applied.

But his personality made my body want to shudder. The mere thought of having to spend more than an hour alone with him made my blood boil.

"Well, it should be working now. Can I have the keys?" Greyson threw the rag on the floor next to the car and I scrunch my nose at it.

Nick reached into his front pocket and threw the keys at Greyson, who caught them with ease. He walked around on the driver's side and slid onto the seat. In just a few seconds, the car roared to life with a sound much nicer than yesterday.

"Wow, that's actually impressive." I say as Gresyon slid out of the car.

He smirked. "You flatter me, sweetheart."

"All right, we better get going now." Nick chimes and Greyson rolls his eyes. "Don't want to get stuck in traffic."

"You're right." I nod, shoving my hands unto my back pockets. "Abby, let's go." She nodded and whispered something to Owen.

Greyson walked up to me slowly until he was only inches from my face. His minty breath hit my forehead and my voice got caught in my throat I wanted to back up, but my body didn't.

"If you ever need more car help," He whispered, his eyes connecting with mine. "Call me." He lifted his hand in between our face, a small business card between his fingers.

He smirks as I take it and he backs away slowly, my cheeks flushed.

"Dylan," I blink and look at Nick, who was sitting in between the car and the driver's side door.

Abby was helping Owen into the backseat of the car as I jogged over to the front seat and slid inside. The garage door started to rise slowly, the setting sunlight projecting inside the building.

"See you soon!" I heard Greyson call from his desk as he sat back down, propping his feet up with his magazine in his hands.

I roll my eyes as Nick drives the car out into the road.
