An incandescence tears through the blackened sky,
Frightening its fireflies and diminishing their sparks.
As the minutes pass, a cascade of light sails
On the arduous journey to traverse the earth.
The dusk doesn't put up much of a fight,
Knowing it will once again be back to rule the sky.
A kaleidoscope of orange, yellow, and pink
Burst from the horizon and expel the residual blackness.
What was once enveloped in darkness
Is now a watercolor canvas of blue.
Its cotton surface is dotted with the names of its inhabitants
In the form of soaring wings and wisps of white.
As the day reaches its climax,
The diadem overlooks its kingdom from the summit.
And by the end of the daily watch,
It once again returns to the villa in the west.
An aversion stalks the air throughout the voyage:
The twilight will once more have its share of the crown.
Impatient for its turn among the sky,
Shadows gather any existing light in their jaws.
What once looked over its subjects with pride
Now emanates a rosy anger toward its successor.
The overseer shimmers back in mockery,
But the dawn knows it will get its chance soon enough.
It glances one more time at what its realm has become,
And then dips its head below the skyline.
Surrounded by darkness with its head held high,
The regained crown yet again takes its place among the stars.
