Chapter 8 p 2
He stood there, his shoulders rolled back his gray eyes examining the world around him. How could he be standing there, and nobody did anything about it.
Was he really an elete?
I watched as the first girl made her way down the stairs, Molly Burns, a middle class girl with strawberry blonde hair. She sported a lemon yellow knee length gown. A middle class guy walked up to call for her first dance, and the two of them walked to the side, nobody else would dance, until the two main elete, Conrad and I guess Nathen had made the choice of the two girls they wanted to call for their first dance with.
I watched as Allice made her way down the stairs, her delicate curls bouncing off her shoulders. She looked like an angel as she slid to the floor, and the men exchanged glances, until one stepped out. I was shocked as Nathen didn't move an inch, instead Mason bowed before her, and the two of them made their way to the side.
I wondered if anyone would come up to me when I made my way down to the floor, if nobody did, it was a sign that one was undesired and should grow up a spinster.
I watched as Megan danced her way to the floor, Gerald Williams, her date bowing before her.
Shya descended next, timid but confident, and I watched with eager eyes to see if Conrad would walk out next to her, however he didn't move a muscle, and my eyes widened even more as Nathen came out of line, lowering before her. He kissed her hand, their eyes linking.
I felt a tinge of the green eyed monster bubble up in my stomach as he stood with her, a proud smile playing at her lips to be chosen by him. It hurt to know that we had been close friends the week before.
I walked up when it came to my turn, my eyes raking over the crowd below. I drew in a breath, rolling my shoulders back and sticking out my chin as I pressed down the stairs, forcing a smile.
One step at a time Drew
I waited at the bottom, counting the seconds as nobody came. I just knew I would be a spinster. Who would want a rebel like me?
However, I glanced up when someone cleared their throat next to me. My heart skipped a beat, as I glanced at who was before me, looming over me.
"C Conrad?" I muttered out, falling victim to his mesmerizing eyes. My stomach did flips and he lifted my hand to kiss it, pulling me closer to prepare for the first dance.
I savored in the feeling of his strong hand against my waist, my other hand engrossed in his. He made all the nerves go away for that moment, as I pretended I was someone else, a girl who was not being watched by everyone.
It was just Conrad and I
Shya seamed pleased in the arms of Nathen, as he spun her, her shark eyes latching onto mine as we exchanged glances. Allice sulked in the arms of her date, even though Mason was a catch, if she wasn't with Conrad it Nathen, then she might as well be dead in her books.
"What are you thinking about," Conrad's voice broke me out of my thoughts, I shifted my hand in his, not knowing what to say.
"About my friends," I stated, giving him a half truth. He laughed lightly, flashing me a lopsided grin. I felt the heat rising to my cheeks so quick I could not hold it back.
"The competition starts on Monday," he stated, and all of us get to stay in the Royal quarters for the grand Assembly, are you ready for all of that." His words sunk deep into my brain, I had been asking myself that question all week, was I ready?
I shrugged in response, forcing a brave face as I caught a glare from
shya, I wondered if she was ready. Conrad drew in a breath, glancing around the room as he locked eyes with Alice, "I'll be back," he excused himself, and before I could even gathered my thoughts, he vanished behind a door.
I stood confessed in the middle of the dance floor, dumbstruck staring at the place where Conrad has been a second ago as the music came to a close, girls smiling at their dates, and attempting to get the attention of an elite.
Food was the next stop for me.
I made my way through the crowd, dodging confrontation with anybody. I snatched up a plate, piling it high with treats, I guess this was the way I eased my nerves, however I didn't get far before someone spoke behind me.
"Of course I would expect it from you to come over to the food table." I glanced up at the three girls, each of them wearing a glare on their face. Nancy still slightly in front of Louisiana and Emma, her arms crossed.
I knew I would have to face them eventually, when I had refused their offer on the bus. I didn't want it to be here though.
"Well it seams that I can't expect much from you as well, seeing that you all got asked by third class men to dance, oh, and it appears that you didn't get asked to dance at all," I turned my ice filled eyes on lucyAnna.
I knew it was a cold road to go on, it wasn't really polite to speak in that kind of a way, but they had been nothing but rude to me for years, and I knew that I had made my way up to the top they had become a trio of social climbers.
Nancy huffed, glaring at me, " Jonathan is not in the third class," She croaked, grabing a glass of lemon water. I chuckled lightly, preparing to leave, but I was cornered by another face I didn't want to see on the way out.
"We need to talk," Shya hissed, she looked so much different with her red hair done up, and elegant makeup plastered onto her once reserved face. I stood there, my mind unable to catch up with tonight's events as I listened. I know Nathen and you have been sneaking around, and I just wanted to say," I held up my hand, my mind spinning out of control.
How did she know? Was she spying on me?
"What are you, spying on me now? How do you know him anyway," I quipped out, leaning against the wall, as everyone joined for another slow song.
"Drew, Nathen is the son of the President, of course I would know, and, he has taken an interest in me as well, he made that clear by the way he asked me for the first dance. All I am saying is, just don't let all of this attention go to your head."
I nearly had had it with her, but by the piece of information I had just gained, I was struck silent. He was the presidents son, that meant he would one day be the president. How had I not known this before?
Did everyone know this but me?
His father shared the same gray eyes as him, and the hard carved jawline.
" you are telling me to not let it go to my head," I bit those words out at her, annoyance flooding into my system faster than I could manage. Her guarded expression stayed the same, once shy passive Shya had turned into a snake just as two faced as Allison.
"I am planning on winning, and if you cared about me, you would let me, my father is loosing all his money, and he is counting on me, we may loose our class slot because of it." I took a step back, as her eyes pleaded with me.
I would have promised her a marriage with Conrad in a heartbeat a month ago however things had changed, and I may lose my place if I fall behind, I turned on my heel and stocked off, molding into the dancers as I attempted to compose myself.
How had this night gotten so out of hand?
