Chapter 2: Travel to the Future

I returned to the dorm, my mind still swirling with thoughts of Maya. Sleep had eluded me, and the next morning, I woke up early, feeling drained.

"Good morning!" Leah and Lila chimed in unison as I stumbled into the common area.

"Good morning," I replied, forcing a smile.

After a quick shower and changing into fresh clothes, I walked to class, my mind fog of silence. I barely registered for the lectures, lost in my thoughts. When class finally ended, Leah and Lila took me to a nearby arcade, hoping to lift my spirits.

"Let's play this one!" Leah said, pointing excitedly at a game.

But I remained distant, my mind still preoccupied.

"Mira, what's wrong with you?" Lila asked, concern etched on her face. "You've been lost in thought since we got here."

"Nothing," I replied, but my voice lacked conviction.

"No, something is definitely bothering you," Lila insisted.

"Is it about yesterday's email?" Leah probed gently.

"Yeah," I admitted, the weight of my emotions surfacing.

"Come here, let me hug you," Lila said, opening her arms. I stepped into their embrace, and as they enveloped me, my tears began to fall.

"Don't cry, Mira," Leah whispered, her voice soothing.

"Please don't," Lila added, her grip tightening around me.

At that moment, surrounded by their warmth, I felt a flicker of comfort. I spent the time with them, and slowly, the heaviness in my heart began to lift if only a little. I realized that even amidst the pain, I wasn't truly alone.

After we returned to the dorm, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. "I need some time alone," I told Leah and Lila, who nodded understandingly, their expressions softening with concern.

I walked slowly to a small café nearby, the familiar streets blurring around me. The bell above the door chimed softly as I entered, and the rich aroma of coffee enveloped me. I approached the counter, my fingers tracing the menu as I ordered a coffee—Maya's favorite.

As I waited, I could almost hear her laughter, the way she'd tease me about my choice of drinks. When the barista handed me the steaming cup, I wrapped my hands around it, feeling the warmth seep into my skin. I took a tentative sip, the taste bittersweet, and memories flooded back—Maya's smile, her playful nudges, the shared moments over countless cups of coffee.

I settled into a corner table, staring out the window as people bustled by. Each sip felt like a reminder of what I had lost. The café buzzed with laughter and chatter, but I felt like a ghost, drifting through a world that no longer felt like mine.

With each sip, the weight in my chest tightened. I closed my eyes, letting the warmth of the coffee seep into my soul, hoping to find solace in the familiarity of it all. But instead, the emptiness only deepened, and I fought back the tears that threatened to spill over.
After finishing my coffee, I lingered in the café until darkness enveloped the streets. When I stepped outside, the air was cool, and only a few people wandered by, their silhouettes illuminated by streetlights.

As I walked toward the road, the sudden roar of an engine jolted me from my thoughts. I turned just in time to see headlights barreling toward me, and panic surged through my veins. My mind raced, the only thought piercing through the chaos was Maya—my twin sister.

In that split second, I closed my eyes, bracing for impact. But instead of the expected collision, an eerie stillness enveloped me. I felt weightless as if I had slipped into another realm. Time seemed to stretch infinitely, and for a moment, I was suspended between life and death.

Then, gradually, familiar voices began to seep into my consciousness. I fought to open my eyes, and when I finally did, I found myself in a cozy living room, the soft glow of a lamp casting a warm light over the space. Maya sat beside me, her laughter filling the air as we watched a movie together.

"Maya," I breathed, disbelief flooding my senses.

"Yes, Mira," she replied, her smile radiant. "Don't be angry because I didn't wake you up. You were watching with me, but after a few minutes, you fell asleep."

"Did I?" I asked, still trying to grasp the reality of this moment.

"Yeah! Did you forget?" she teased lightly. "You were with your book publisher partner an hour ago. After she left, you came here to watch a movie with me."

Without a word, I wrapped my arms around her, the warmth of her presence grounding me.

"Did anything happen?" she asked, her tone shifting to concern.

"I can't believe I traveled to my future," I murmured, a mix of awe and confusion swirling within me.

At that moment, the weight of my worries faded, replaced by the comfort of being with Maya again, even if it was just a fleeting dream.

After the embrace, I pulled back slightly, searching Maya's eyes. "Can I ask you something?"

"Yeah, sure, Mira," she replied, her smile still bright.

"Whose house is this? And why is it so big?" I asked, glancing around the spacious living room, decorated with elegant furnishings and personal touches.

"Mira," she laughed, a lightness in her tone, "this is our house!"

"What?" I exclaimed, disbelief washing over me.

"Yeah!" she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"How?" I stammered, trying to piece together this surreal reality.

"Mira, did you forget? You're now one of the top five best-selling authors of the year!" Maya's voice was filled with pride.

I felt my heart race, shock coursing through me. "And you're rich, famous—an author, Mira!" she added, her enthusiasm contagious.

The weight of her words settled around me, and for a moment, I was lost in a whirlwind of possibilities. Could it really be true? The idea of success, of finally achieving my dreams, felt both exhilarating and overwhelming.

"Maya, I can't believe it," I whispered, the enormity of everything sinking in.

"Believe it, sis," she said, her voice steady and reassuring. "You've worked hard for this. You deserve every bit of it."

As I absorbed her words, a sense of hope flickered within me, mingling with the disbelief. Maybe this dream wasn't just a fantasy after all.
