Amelia Ruiz is a Mexican-American girl living in a time of discrimination against her community. She's confused with her life and everything around her. Dealing with her body image and the hate she gets from her classmates and sometimes even her own family sends her in a downward spiral that might not let her make it back out the same - if she even makes it out at all.

I frown when I glance in the mirror. Pieces of fat stomach bulge out from my shirt where the pants dig into my skin. Quickly, I open the bathroom door and run back into my room. I crouch down and pull out a new shirt, one that will cover up my extra skin.

I have to look good because I want and need to.
