After a few hours, Devan eagerly went down the dirt road, his adrenaline increasing. He was going to go hang out with Stella at his secret spot that wasn't such a secret anymore. The two had been meeting up with each other a lot more lately, and their visits had grown frequent. Devan was starting to grow a great passion for Stella and hoped the feelings were mutual, and this particular night sets the lapse of the events that would soon come.
"Hey Dev!" The young girl called, meeting the gaze of the Key boy. He beamed when he saw her face, "Hey Stella!" She edged closer to him and sat beside the teenager under the oak tree, her arm skimming his. His heartbeat increased, feeling her presence. He hoped the redness in his face wasn't too noticeable. Devan and Stella soon began to talk with one another and laugh about their day, things that happened at school and many other events. Soon the topic of the performance came up and their duet dance.
Stella smiled, tilting her head up towards the clouds as a light pink color from the sun setting spread across them, "Man I love that one song 'My Girl' we do together. I don't know why I love it so much..maybe it's because I feel it has a deeper meaning within it, ya know?" Devan nodded in understanding, knowing full well how he felt about the song, "Yeah, I feel the same way.." Stella glanced at Devan quickly and smirked, "I'm so glad you are my partner and not Nathan."
"Me too, I hate the guy," Hearing what he said come out of his mouth, Devan immediately regretted it. He forced out quickly, "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that." The ginger giggled a little and nudged the boy, "No worries! Nate is the worst. He always gets on my nerves when he tries to flirt with me..," she playfully gags causing them both to laugh. Stella fiddled with her fingers after calming down, "But yeah, you don't have to be sorry. We've been friends for at least two months now so we should be able to talk to each other about these things."
A sudden shadow came across the girl and her facial expression saddened. Devan grew concerned, "What's wrong?" Stella glanced at him and bent her head down, "It's just—," she began to position her body so she was facing the boy, "Can I...can I tell you something?" He wasn't sure what she wanted to tell him but agreed, "Of course, anything."
Her eyes directed on Devan's, shimmering in the moonlight. She stared at him for a long while and let out a shaky breath, "Okay.. I never really talk about this to anyone because it's sort of personal, but I trust you." Now Devan knew this was important and listened intently. "So, you know how my parents are divorced?" She asked cautiously.
"Yeah.."
"Well, my father is seeing someone and I don't like her. The woman is like twelve years younger than him she could practically be my sister. I think he's just into her because she's young and it makes me so..so angry. I know my mom is heartbroken about it, it's as if she wasn't good enough for him. I don't even want to live with my father anymore..h-he barely pays attention to me anyway." Devan felt awful for Stella. He could hear the devastation in her voice and see the tears glisten in her eyes.
He placed his hand reassuringly on hers, "Hey," she looked up at him, "I know what it feels like to be confused about change..just know that people are hear for you; I'm hear for you." Stella then smiled him, blinking back her tears, "Thanks, Devan. That means a lot." She soon wrapped her arms around the friend and he did the same. The young boy comforted her for a few seconds, not wanting that moment to end. They pulled away and there was an obvious flushness come from Devan, but Stella didn't seem mind or notice.
"Thanks for listening..I had to get that off my chest. I bet you don't have any crazy things that happen in your life like mine.." Does being related to a famous Youtuber count, the boy asked in his head. Devan shrugged his shoulders and answered, "Nope, I'm just a normal dude with nothing special going on." He knew it wasn't good to lie to her but..was he willing to risk what relationship he has with her? Stella giggled as her body still stayed close to his, "That's okay, I like you for you, and I think you're pretty special." A warm glow came into existence on her face, almost like a blush.
This sort of surprised Devan and he was sure of he was imagining it. Was he imagining it? The sun set and the moon was in full blaze. He could barely see Stella's face now, just her silhouette-her beautiful silhouette. He couldn't think clearly anymore as her hand still rested in his. Just go for it Devan, his thoughts screamed. Stella was silent but she continued to stare at his frame. Her fingers tangled with his and gripped tightly. His pulse was going wild as it course through his veins.
Devan felt his and Stella's body creep closer towards each other and the movement didn't stop. His hormones were on edge unsure what was happening but it felt right. It remained silent, they leaned in closer and—
"Devan?" They stopped. Inches from each other quickly became feet in an instant once the presence of a third member joined the moment. Burning red, Devan called with a croak, "I-I'm here!" The boy knew the person was Collins, even if he could barely see anything there was no denying the relation. Stella stammered, her hands now far from Devan's, "Hey, Joey!" She spoke quietly to her friend, "Thanks for the talk. Um..I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay," was all he could say as the girl stood up and exited the scene in a quick haste. Devan sighed defeatedly and got, walking toward the direction of the dirt road where his older brother stood. Without a word, the two slowly headed down the dark path back to their house. The young one wasn't sure what to say until Collins interrupted his circling thoughts, "Bro, do you realize you've been out here for almost two hours? It's ten thirty and you missed dinner!"
Was it that late? Devan's cheeks continued to burn but Collins didn't notice and continued, "What were you two doing anyway?" The artist shoved his hands into his pockets, "Just talking.."
"Oh yeah like I'm gonna by that! I didn't hear any noise when I came over to get you." Silence overtook the void until the eldest asked with interest, "Were you two—?" Devan stopped him quickly, "No!" Collins laughed a little, "But you guys were going to...right?" The boy didn't answer for a long while, "I don't know what was happening.."
Collins poked the boy in the arm, "You guys really need to hook up. I can just see it," Devan couldn't see this but Collins gestured out his hands and stated, "Stevan!" Devan rolled his eyes and slugged his brother gently in the arm, "Shut up, bro." That's when the two gave their last heartfelt laugh and rounded the dirt corner the night feeling endless.
