{2 days later}

The Key family all came to the table after a long day. Devan was starving from a long practice at school, and his brother as well from his two hour day classes. Their mom set out a pot of roast beef in front of the men at the table.

Mr. Key went to take the lid off of the container and took a long whiff of the hearty meal, "Honey, this smells delicious." He kissed her as Devan started digging in, "Yeah mom, it's cooked so perfectly, like always." Mrs. Key smiled at her kind family, "Thank you. Just know I slaved over that kitchen counter to get everything prepped for you guys." They believed it. The woman always went all out to make the food for their family.

Collins was dished his roast but he wasn't as excited as the others were to have some. He looked down and felt for his key necklace and fingered it. Devan took note of it and realized his older brother looked slightly down. Collins was usually in deep thought when he messes with his special key necklace. The younger one tried to ignore it and stabbed his fork into the juicy, tender roast and stuck the food into his mouth.

He bit down into it and the boy's taste buds went off the charts! The tenth grader spoke in between bites, "Mom! This is..like the best roast you've made..EVER!" The middle aged woman smiled at him, "Thank you, Devan." The dad looked at his older son who barely touched his food, "Collins, is something wrong?"

The boy looked up with a startle, deep in his thoughts. Collins let go of his necklace and looked at the concerned expressions he was getting from his family. He wanted to put them at ease, "Guys, I'm alright. I was just thinking..," he took his silverware and cut of the meat, chewing on what was now in his mouth, "Mmm! That's really good mom, as usual." The family wasn't fully convinced, he wasn't even sure if it was even convincing to himself. Collins didn't really know what was wrong, something didn't seem right. He took more bites of the roast beef, slowly reaching for his necklace.

Later, the sun began to set and the rain started to shower from outside the window. The family was cleaning up from dinner, well the boys did. The parents went in the room to "talk". Devan looked and saw Collins looking slightly better. He couldn't help but ask, "What was going on..during dinner?" His brother started to turn glum again and the younger one added quickly, "You just looked like a lot of stuff was on your mind. Are you okay?"

The older one tilted down towards his necklace, "Yeah, it's just..you know when you get that feeling that something bad is happening or will happen?" The younger one nodded as Collins sighed, "That's what was thinking about. I'm okay, really." Devan knew there was something else but didn't push it, "Okay, good."

The blonde went to put dishes into the kitchen sink and tilted his head towards his brother. He had a mischievous look in his eye that made Devan curious, "What's up?" Collins grabbed the freezer door handle and tugged it, pulling out a carton of ice cream, "I think it's time to have some dessert." A shimmer of childhood spark filled the shorter boy's features, "You said it not me!" With childish grins, the boys went to the cupboard and got out two bowls and spoons, and started serving up cookies and cream ice cream.

{Time Skip}

It was 10:30 at night now and the key brother's had turned on Family Guy on the couch having already cleared their ice cream bowls. They heard the wind pick up it's speed, and the rainfall coming down harder. Devan was starting to doze off but Collins felt wide awake. The older brother noticed and a smirk came across his face, "Dev, you're falling asleep and you have school in the morning. Go to bed." The younger one moaned trying to keep his eyelids open, "Just one...more...episode!"

Collins laughed at him but was interrupted with a doorbell chiming throughout the house. The two exchanged a glance as the bell rang once more. They weren't expecting anyone to come over, especially at this time of night. Being the responsible one, Collins got up to answer the door, "I'm coming, hold on!" The young man reached for the knob and twisted it open. Once he opened it, he found a familiar face on his doorstep.

Standing before him was Carla, practically drenched from head to toe, with tears streaming down her cheeks. His eyes grew with distress as he saw her standing there holding her arms, shivering in the cold, only wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Collins breathed out in shock, "Carla?" Carla blurted out in pure pain, "Eddie cheated on me!"

As if in instinct, she ran into his chest and he pulled her into a tight embrace as she sobbed into his grey sweatshirt. Eddie cheated on Carla?! How could he do that to her?! Without asking anything, Collins just held her comfortingly and she cried while Devan stood in the living room to see what was happening. Soon the older one brought the sad girl into his house and he sat with her on the couch, turning the TV off.

Carla was no longer crying and only sniffled, leaning her head on Collins's shoulder. The key parents came out of their room to see the situation. The father looked from the girl to his boys, "What's wrong? We heard crying." The uninvited guest spoke up, "My boyfriend..cheated on me." Mrs. Key saddened stepping towards the curly haired girl, "Awe you poor baby." She sat next to her and began to rub her back.

The boy's mother has known Carla for a long time. The woman was best friends with the girl's mother at work and the daughter had came over to the house quite a few times, but never this late. Devan remained quiet for some time. This wasn't his conversation and he was taught to not intervene. Mrs. Key asked the hurting one, "Do you want to talk about it?" Carla didn't answer with her eyes glossing over.

They all sat there and Collins wanted to dearly help her, he hated seeing her like this. He looked over at her, grabbing her hand gently, "Wanna go talk out on the porch?" Carla looked as if she was thinking about it and finally stood up which meant she did. The magician led the girl towards the front door once again as he felt his family's gaze follow them out.

He opened the door for her while she walked out by the railing. Collins shut the door behind him and walked over towards her, leaning on the same railing. He felt his heart beat wildly when he caught a glimpse of her looking at the rain out in front of them. She looked stunning with the moon's glow settling on her face, her angelic body fallen gracefully on the porch rail, her hair laying nicely on her shoulder, twisted as if it was professionally woven. For someone who was downright miserable, she couldn't have looked better..

Collins escaped his thoughts and noticed her body shiver, "Are you cold?" Carla rubbed her arms without looking him in the eyes, "I'm fine, Collins." No she wasn't. Without more thought, he took off his hoodie and held it in front of her. She saw it and cautiously took it and started putting it on, "Thanks." After a moment of silence, the boy soon spoke, "So..curly fry, what's a girl like you doing at a place like this?" Carla looked at him with a bit of annoyance mixed in a playful smirk, "You can never be serious for more than five minutes, can you, Collins?" He gave a light laugh, "Hey, I'm just trying to lighten the mood."

"Whatever, cyclopes." The lanky boy asked now with wholehearted concern, "So what happened?" The girl looked down at the grass in the front yard and took a deep breath, "...Well, I was going to run some errands for myself and I told Eddie I'd meet up with him at his apartment around 9:45. So I went to the store and I actually finished earlier than expected. I drove to Eddie's house...with his jeep," she looked ashamed and angry at herself, "And I went inside to ask him if he'd come and help me unload my groceries to find him...with this blonde chick. He was all over her," she closed her eyes, "I couldn't believe what I was seeing, at the same time trying to unsee it. I yelled and cussed him out for making out with the girl..and I ended it. I left him his jeep and my groceries."

Collins listened intently to her words, feeling even more hurt for her than before. Carla continued opening her eyes again, "I didn't know where to go. Eddie had lended me the car for the day so all I had was my bike. It was pouring..I was cold. I didn't want to go to my parents..they wouldn't understand," she looked at him, "So I came here. I knew you'd be there for me, you always were. And..I needed you."

She needed him? The tall boy couldn't speak as her eyes shimmered hitting his. Carla looked down timidly, "You were right..about Eddie. He wasn't the right guy for me. All he ever thought about was his selfish interests. Honestly, I don't know what I saw in him in the first place. I need someone who cares about me, someone that I'll be able to talk to about anything. Someone who can make me laugh at the worst times and make me feel like I'm the luckiest person in the world," she suddenly blushed, "Those words you said at the beach..did you mean it?"

The guy felt time stop as he stared at her, "Are you kidding? Every word I said on that beach was 100% truth. You mean more to me than most things in this world. I've known you for so long that it felt like you were my sister," he paused not sure how she'll react. He slowly went to grab her hands, "But when you started dating Eddie..I realize you weren't like a sister to me. You are literally my best friend, Carla. You are so strong and you make me feel like I can do anything. Also, you are so beautiful words can't ever describe. A-and..," he blurted it out, "I love you."

Carla was speechless as Collins's face grew a bright crimson. He wasn't sure how she would react until he felt her move closer to him. He looked to see her smiling and a tear come down her cheek, "I love you too, you softy." Collins heart began to burst with a grin showing his happiness. He placed his hands on Carla's face, wiping the fresh tear off her cheek. He slowly leaned towards her and his lips touched hers with passion.

Devan poked his eye through the blinds to see Collins's hands on Carla's waist and Carla's arms around his neck. A sly smile filled his expression. "Do you think they are doing okay out there?" He heard his mom ask behind him. The boy turned towards the woman with a smile, "I think they are doing just fine." He turned back towards the two as they let their moment last, a moment they hoped they could always share more times to come.
