Devan typed on his laptop in the bedroom quickly and with determination. He moved his mouse. Click. He leaned back with a sigh as a website popped onto the screen. Devan took a breath in and started to speak, "Alright Springfield, show me what you have to offer." He started to scroll and click the mouse trying to find something he could be interested in at this school. At first, he was doubtful, but then he spotted something that made him smile, "Hmmm, Art and Photography..."
"Hey, bro!" It was Collins coming through the door, "Whatcha lookin at?" Devan replied still staring and scrolling at the computer screen, "Trying to find something to look forward to at this school..," he started thinking to himself, "Do they have an Art club too..?" The older one smirked, "You know you're starting tomorrow, right? You can just figure it out when you get there, have a tour, and maybe find something other than Art to be interested in." Too bad that was the ONLY thing he was good at, he thought. But Devan just kept that to himself, "Yeah, I'm just finding some ideas." Collins reached his lankier body over him, "Well, you can put a pause on those ideas for a quick..second!"
He had grabbed the mouse and went onto a new tab. Devan laughed as his brother's side smashed into his forehead, "Hey! What are you-?" Collins pulled away and the screen showed their posted video from yesterday, "Bro, look at this! It shot up to 51K views and 36K Likes in only 16 hours!" Devan couldn't believe it even though he knew his brother would be a big hit, "Oh my gosh! This is awesome!" The taller Key smiled and grabbed the mouse and scrolled down, "And dude, read the comments!" The younger one inched closer but Collins's arm was in the way, "Move!" He grabbed the mouse from him and began to scroll. Devan cracked a smile, "Haha, 'The egg throwing part satisfied me'." Collins rubbed his head, "It satisfied my head trauma." They both laughed and scrolled, "Ooh! 'Omg Collins is so much taller than Devan!! Lol'!" The other playfully pouted, "Hey! I had an out of control growth spurt.."
"Sure you did, buddy," Devan responded patting his brother's shoulder. When he did that, Collins looked at the screen and his eyes popped out, "Ohh! Look at this one!" He lunged at the computer and pointed at the comment, "'Devan is low key attractive'?!" Devan made a blank stare and shrugged, "Well that's one person..-" Collins stopped him, "No bro, look! The comment got 265 likes and 60 comments!"
"Actually 32 but thanks for the lift up."
"No wait dude, check them out!" This was starting to make Devan uncomfortable. Collins rattled off a few on the screen, "'I know right', 'More like high key',-- 'Sorry but Devan is way hotter than Collins'?! That's rude! But Devan, don't you see that girls so dig you?" The younger one saw the screen, but for some reason didn't believe the words. Attractive? How can a guy who is so skinny, shorter than all the other people in his grade group, and be so insecure about his smile be attractive? He wasn't a jock, lift weights, or anything because of his hurt shoulder and he didn't really care for it anyway. But it's always been an insecurity for him in a public place when he sees the cool kids walk past him. They see Collins, but Devan was just his shadow. Now that all these girls were saying all these comments about him, he wasn't sure how to take it. He closed up his laptop and spun his chair around, "How about we take a break from the video, huh?" Confused, Collins asked, "But what about-"
"I'm gonna go for a walk on the trail." Devan walked past his older brother and towards the door.
Collins wondered what was up with his younger brother. Devan seemed just fine a moment ago.. Then he realized. Devan must be feel insecure about his appearance to fully understand people love him. But Collins had his fair share of negative feelings about himself. For starters, he has always been the tallest in his class and when he was in middle school, he was made fun of for it. On top of that, he can't read or write well because of his dyslexia, but that didn't stop him from believing his fans mean what they say. His defaults make Collins who he is and that didn't stop him from finding a girl who loved him too. He was not with someone at the moment, but there was definitely someone who caught his eye.
Her name is Carla. She is such an optimistic, smart, driven and beautiful girl. Unfortunately, she's dating a guy named Eddie and Collins thinks she can do much better than him. But Devan hasn't had that experience yet, let alone have a crush recently. Collins would know because bros tell each other everything, no matter how stupid. Maybe having Devan go to a school with people his age will help him find some friends..or that someone he can call his own.
After seeing Devan walk off, with questions and thoughts running through his head, Collins decided to let his brother go on the trail by himself.
Devan started to walk quickly towards the trail, having realized Collins didn't come after him he slowed down his pace. He exhaled and stuck his hands in his jacket pockets, kicking a pebble that was in front of him. Soon Devan began to relax as the trees along the trail began to sway, rocking his worries from existence. He suddenly smiled feeling the breeze take him away from the world's problems, the new school, his insecurities, his mind. Midway through the trail, he stopped and the familiar spot and cut through a secret hideaway he and his brother shared. He made his way through the branches and found his grassy hill with a beautiful tree that stretched its branches all around, now filled with color because of the change of season.
Collins and Devan had found this place and hung out by it since they were kids. They didn't have any other friends but each other and their imaginations. They'd always play make believe and pretend they were mountain climbers and see who could reach the top first..until Devan fell and broke his arm and popped his shoulder. Still, they continued to play and even though they aren't so little anymore, they like to go and sit by the tree and clear their minds. Devan gave a deep sigh and walked over to the tree and laid his back on the tree trunk, grabbing a folded piece of paper and a pencil from his pocket, and began to draw. He had never really gone anywhere without something to doodle on and under the autumn oak tree was his favorite spot. It just..inspired him to draw his most favorite things. When they were younger, Devan would draw or paint and Collins will perfect his magic tricks. It was like their second home to get away.
As Devan doodled, he heard a sudden noise come from the other side of the tree, then a thump, and a deep sigh. He would've assumed it was Collins coming over to join him under the tree, but his older brother usually said something to him by now and the person came from the other side of the woods. Also this person sounded feminine. Devan began to sit stiff at the acknowledgement that someone was there that he didn't know and it was a girl. He started to speak but in a confused form, "Uh..hello?"
There was a gasp and someone stood up from the other side of the tree. The sound of crackling leaves and footsteps of the person started to come around in front of him. The girl who stood above him made Devan freeze. She had light ginger hair, crystal blue eyes sort of like his own, freckles across her nose and light cherry lips. She wore an orange vest with a white shirt under it, blue jeans, and combat boots. Devan found himself staring then realized she was talking to him.
The girl looked nervous as if she was stepping onto unwanted territory, "Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! I didn't realize anyone was up here. I thought I was alone, if you want me to leave that's fine." Devan shook his head, "No, it's okay..it's-it's not really my tree." Wow, good first impression Devan, he thought. 'It's not really my tree'?? Of course it's not his tree, he didn't put a sign up that said "Don't Touch Devan's Tree"! Why is he so socially awkward..? The girl didn't seem fazed but more so relieved, "Okay, good. I'm new to the neighborhood and I sort of stumbled upon this place and I thought it was a nice setting for someone to just..breathe." Devan felt the same way but kept his mouth shut. The girl suddenly hit her head, "Oh, I probably should introduce myself, shouldn't I?" She held her hand out, "I'm Stella Green."
Devan realized he should probably stand up and say his name too. He did so and shook her hand, it felt soft, "I'm Devan Key." A smile formed on her face and suddenly his did as well. They let go and Stella began to look like she was thinking, "Key? Where have I heard that last name?" Devan became anxious. He didn't want her to know he was Collins Key's brother and go wanting to be friends with the famous America's Got Talent star and leave him in the dust. So he quickly fired back, "I was wondering that same thing..are you related to Celo Green?" Stella's cheeks rose up to her eyes and she started to giggle. Devan immediately loved her laugh, it was charming but real. She started to calm down and cross her arms, "Do I look like Celo Green?"
"Maybe if it was dark out and..you chopped all your hair off," Devan replied starting to chuckle a little. Stella laughed too, "Even if I did do that, I can't sing for my life!" They both laughed some more. A tear came down from the girl's eye from laughing so much reminding Devan of Collins when he laughs, "Wow, you have a really good sense of humor, Devan." That made the tenth grader smile and Stella continued, "Maybe you are related to a famous comedian." Or a famous magician.. Devan commented with a raise of his eyebrow, "Maybe I am." Stella smirked making Devan not want this moment to end. But then a ding sound came from a phone. She went into her back pocket and fished out what looked like an IPhone 6, the latest phone out, "Oh geez, my dad texted me and said I need to go home.." It just ended. Devan just shrugged, "Oh that's fine, maybe I'll see you some other time since we're neighbors." Then she eruptively said something he didn't expect, "Do you have a phone?"
"Uh..for what?"
"Oh crap, I'm sorry I keep jumping into random topics. I was thinking we could exchange numbers?" Devan was hoping she'd ask but only answered, "Sure." He pulled out his IPhone 5 and they gave each other their phone numbers. Devan stared at his phone punching numbers into it, "...4563?" Stella nodded, "Uh huh, those are the last digits."
"Stella! Are you out here?" She gasped as she heard a voice come from a nearby house in the distance, "Coming, daddy!" Stella turned to Devan, slowly walking away, "Thanks for the number..I'll see you later, Devan!" She started to jog away into the bushes till she was gone. He smiled as she left and waved, "Bye." After a few seconds, Devan went to the tree to grab his drawing he was working on earlier and shoved it into his pocket, then looked at his phone and powered it off. As he started to walk back on the trail a smile grew on his face. He actually made a new friend.
