Chapter 1

*Oneye P.O.V*

I saw her turn back and she ran as fast as she could, her dog by her side. I wanted to catch her but how could I? Just a young girl running for, I don't know what, but she was running from something.

For what? I don't know, at least not yet. She ran by the hills and stumbled, she rolled to the side and her dog stopped by her, that dog was really loyal. She stood up and looked back, I didn't see anyone following her. Her dog nudged her leg gently. She patted the dog's head and started to walk away. I had to follow her. Since she was walking, I could get a good look at her.

Her dark brown hair was in a braid going down her back, her amber eyes sparked with hope and excitement. She had a dark blue jacket over her plain white shirt and blue jeans that had a lot of rips in them. She had a bag that she placed over her shoulder, it was brown, and it seemed to have her stuff in it. She wore blue runners that seemed to fit her well, I couldn't tell how old she was, but she was probably about my age. 

I was hiding behind some trees when I heard her scream something out loud. I watched her but didn't see anything. Then I realized what it was, there were people with spears here, the people I lived with. I was far behind now, so I started to run, they were surrounding her and her dog. 

"Stop!" I yelled as loud as I could.

"Oneye?" They all responded.

"Yes! Now Stop!" I said as I ran down a hill.

I could see the fear in the girl's eyes and her dog ready to pounce. She held on to her bag and to the dog's ruff. The dog growled at me and I backed away.

"Why do we hurt those who don't hurt us?" I asked as I was walking around them.

"We try to keep ourselves safe!" One answered, all the rest cheered at his words.

"I will take this girl, you won't hurt her," I said as I walked to the girl. "My name is Oneye," 

She stared and backed away with her dog, I realized I was still holding a dagger in my hand. I put the dagger away and she relaxed a little. Everyone backed away and ran to their village, they disappeared over the hills and it was just me and her left.

"Hi, I am Oneye," I said as I faced her.

"Hi, thanks by the way, I'm Nichole, this is Koda," She said patting her dog's head.

"No problem, you running huh?"

"Yes, how did you know?"

I looked around. "I was watching you," I admitted, "I was."

"Oh, wow," She said, she started walking away.

"Where are you going?"

"Well, I'm going, it's not you, but I have to get out of here,"

"I'm coming with you,"

"Um, kay."

"Where to?"

"Somewhere,"

"Runaway with no plans?"

"Yes, I decided this morning to leave." She said quietly as she turned around to face me."

"Wow, ok, well you're gonna need food and some water, yes?"

"I have a bit, but yea I'll need it," She replied, "Thanks."

"No problem," I said as I took a sac beside a tree, "So where do you plan heading? North? South? East? West?"

"Wherever really, do you know a good place?" She said as she started walking towards some hills.

"I actually do..." I said as I swung the sac over my shoulder. "Let's go." 

We walked to the hills and went over them. We walked silently until the dog went crazy, he started barking.

"Koda! Calm down," She said frantically as she tried to calm him down. "What is it?"

Koda ran over the hills and Nichole chased after him. I hard a shriek and a gasp, so I ran as fast as I could to them, I saw an arrow beside Koda, who was lying down on his side. Nichole was lying on her knees with her arms on the dog, her head buried in his fur.

"What happened?" I asked as I approached. 

"Your people! They hurt him," She got off of Koda and pointed at the arrow, "They attacked, and look, they left that behind." She showed a scar on Koda's back right leg.

"Oh no," I said as I took the arrow in my hand, I carefully examined it.

"What?" She asked as she looked up.

"Poisonous arrow," I said looking back at her.

"WHAT?" she screamed.

"I can help okay?" I said as I took some things out of the bag.

She turned her head to me and took a glance at the dog. "Fine," She stated.

She sat there  watching me and I could feel her fear. I took out a bandage, some water, and a bit of medicine. I took a cloth and put water and medicine on it and placed it on Koda's legs. The dog winced but stayed still.

"So, how old are you?" Nichole asked me.

"I'm... uh 13." I said awkwardly.

"Oh, I'm only 12, I'm turning 13 soon." She told me.

"Can I ask you something?" She asked me.

"Of course," I replied as I wrapped a bandage around Koda's leg.

"Why do you look so different, even though you are like those people, and seem to know them?" She questioned me, as she looked around and stared at my weapons.

"They took me in, my parents, well they left me a long time ago." I said as I got up.

"Oh, my parents, they they don't really like me, they think I'm bad luck."

"Wow." I replied with shock. "He should be better now, but we should camp out here, it's almost dark."

She looked up and nodded. "Let's stay." She murrmured.

I set up a place for us, with a fire and I got some rocks and put the m around the fire. She sat around and watched with her dog. The dog had gotten up and limped towards her and sat by her.

"So, I guess we sleep?"

"Yes we do," I responded.

We had both fallen asleep when I heard a loud shriek from the otherside of the hills.
