Hurt
Chapter 4
*Nichole*
No! I thought as I ran, how could that wolf hurt him, so mean, so... so wrong. I knew I needed to get to the mountains... well I think. Koda and I had to run, but I couldn't leave him, no way. I turned back, and I saw him urging me on, and I turned back to the rocky mountains to check how far they were away, but when I turned back, he was lying on the ground, limp and helpless, a very big bloody mess.
The wolves had gone, so I turned back and ran to him. Koda ran after me, even though I knew he didn't like Oneye.
"Are you okay?" I practically yelled.
I saw him take a breath, a deep one, as if it was hard, or there wasn't enough oxygen. "Yeah.... just you know." He said implying the blood and all.
I stared at the blood and got a little dizzy, there was not too much, but still a lot of blood, it made me woozy. Oneye seemed to half heartily smile at me, I didn't know I looked that pale when I got woozy.
He stared at his bag and pointed at it. I carefully took the leather bag to him and he pointed at a bandage and a cloth. I took it and used it to clean up the bloody wounds. I touched the lightly and honestly I didn't want to touch it at all, but I had to, it was that, or let Oneye die. That was not a choice. He talked me through it. His voice was horse, and I knew he was straining to speak.
He started to wheeze, I didn't know what to do, I thought about water, and food. Maybe oxygen. Oneye seemed to see that I wasn't concentrating, instead I was thinking of all these things. He seemed to figure out that I needed to stay on task, even though I didn't.
"Just try to stop the bleeding, cloth over the worst one, then tightly bind the wounds, if some can't--" he stopped to take a shaky breath. "Just leave it."
I nodded and kept going, soon most of the blood was gone, but Oneye wasn't looking that great. I bandaged all the wounds, claw marks, and bit marks. Those wolves were strong, and it looked like it almost drained all his blood.
"Tired?" I asked.
"Yeah, but we need to get you to that mountain." He said silently.
"But you need rest." I said softly.
"But you need to be safe." He argued.
"But look at you!" I said roughly
"But... I swore." He stated.
"Oh... in that case... okay then, take me there. Here." I held out a hand and helped him up, I carried his bag and together we walked silently to the mountain.
Finally he broke the silence. "Tell me, why are you running?"
I gawked at the question, I didn't know how to answer. "Um... see, my adoption parents, they are mean, you know?"
"Oh, I get what you're saying." He replied quietly
"So I decided to run, not only that, but right now, in the city, they are going crazy, I don't... don't want to be part of it." I said with a sigh as I recalled the story.
--- Flash Back ---
"No, it should be that guy." my mom yelled at my dad.
"No way, it's gotta be her." He yelled back.
My mother was wearing purple dress and leggings underneath. She was going out to a town meeting. My father wore a tux and it boggled my mind that they were wearing these things.
Little did I know that they were going to get in quite the fight.
When they came back they wailed and pleaded for me to not listen, but I did anyways. They couldn't stop me. So they kept talking anyways.
Apparently the people were running for who should be the captain of the army. They got in a fight and now they claimed they would have war with each other till one of them won. It would affect the whole city.
When things started to threaten me and my family, I knew to get out. That's how I had ended up with Oneye.
--- Back to Reality ---
"Oneye, thanks."
"For what?" He seemed confused.
"For saving me, and not yourself." I told him.
"Oh, no problem, that's what I swore to...."
"What exactly did you say?" I was curious and I wasn't letting him forget about it either.
"'To protect the owner at all cost, I, Oneye, promise to always protect, and help the young girl and will lay down my life if I must. I swear over my dead body.'
"Never to lose these treasured items, to return it to her once I was sure." He recited.
"Over your dead body?????" I was amazed.
"Well I'm willing to lay down my life aren't I?" he said, I knew he meant what he just did, he almost died.
He was right, he was about to before anyways, I had to be grateful. How I cherished it, I didn't think he'd take me back, after running and all of that, yet he was still willing. It scared me, how do I know it wasn't trickery?
I wasn't even thinking but Oneye stopped in his tracks. I realized that I wasn't paying any attention at all. So I looked at him, he was looking up at a tall mountain. It's grey rocks crumbling down. Trees were on the side, and there was a trail up the mountain. It wasn't the tallest thing ever, but it still was really tall. I looked up to see a few animals up there. I heard the shriek of an eagle, a beautiful shriek.
I looked at Oneye, in his pants, and no shirt but instead just a cape of fur. I realized that he hadn't looked what-so-ever like an Aboriginal, yet he looked like he belonged. Finally as I started to stare back at him he stared back at me.
"We're here." He said with a heavy heart.
