Chapter Five-Nathan

He smelled her before he saw her. It was a scent he had often dreamed of smelling again. Jasmine mixed with pine and wood smoke. He'd been walking into the office with his officers. His first appointment of the day was a Paige Wilson, a child of one of his pack members. She had apparently been living abroad since they had absorbed her family into the pack and hadn't been able to present herself.

He didn't understand how a wolf could live away from her pack for that long without going rouge but he also had more important things to think about and so put it out of his mind when he was first told about her.

He was so focused in his conversation with his beta that he hadn't even fully registered it was her scent until he turned the corner and saw her. She was staring at the painting on the wall and didn't turn when the walked in.

"Paige?" he said. Not daring to believe it was actually her. The Paige he knew was a human named Paige Robins. She turned and looked at him. His wolf, who had been more aware of her scent, jumped to the forefront of his mind at seeing her face.

"MATE!" He shouted in his head.

"Nathan?" She asked. The sound of her voice sent a thrill to his heart.

"What are you-?" He stared at her in disbelief. In awe that she was here and that she was his mate. The woman he had loved for six months, and had carried a torch for, for five years, was here, in his pack house. Her face, which had reflected his own disbelief, quickly turned angry and she shouted "You son of a bitch!"

He was so stunned by her reaction that when she closed the space between them and pulled her arm back to swing at him he didn't even have time to react. She hit him square in the jaw and screamed, "That's for Bali! You bastard!"

He reeled back from the hit as his beta and gamma rushed her. She kept trying to fight to get to him as the wolf she was with screamed at her to stop. He regained his balance and smiled to himself before looking back at her. "Still got one hell of a right hook I see." He touched his lips where her fist had made contact, it was the same place she had touched him the first time they met. She had punched him then too. He smiled at the memory.

"It's alright, you can let her go." He called to his officers.
"But sir, she attacked you!" His beta said.
"That's just how Paige says hello." He said looking at her. She had stopped struggling and was staring at him, seething with anger.
"I said let her go." His officers did as he commanded but still stood in front of him. Like they didn't trust her not to try to hit him again.
"Come on in Paige, let's talk."

"I have nothing to say to you." She spat. He started to say something but she turned on her heal and started walking to the exit. The wolf she was with, must have been her sister, ran after her.

"Paige, you're supposed to present yourself to the Alpha!"
"Consider myself presented!" She called over her shoulder and marched out the door. His wolf whimpered as he watched her leave. He didn't want to be separated from her so soon after finding her.

"It's okay boy" he thought at Malcom, "She
won't go far. We'll see her soon."

Her sister looked back at him with a look of horror and embarrassment on her face. "Alpha I am so sorry for her behavior, she's normally not like this. She's jet lagged and-" he held up a hand to stop her explanation.
"It's alright. Paige and I have a history." He said as he stared after her.
"You know that human, sir?" His beta, Patrick asked.
"I'm so sorry Alpha, I don't know-" her sister started again. He cut her off by asking her name. When she answered he asked her how he knew Paige. He already knew of course. This must be her younger sister Sophie. Their scents were similar being family but not quite familial as Paige was not a wolf.

Although, his wolf had claimed her as mate. Werewolves can only mate with other werewolves. Paige was human as far as he knew. She had told him as much and she smelled human too.

"Her wolf is dormant." Malcom thought at him.
"What do you mean she's dormant? How can a wolf be dormant in someone that old?"
"She is dormant. We must wake her up." Nathan asked him how to do that but Malcom just gave him the mental equivalent of a shrug and moved to the back of his mind. Clearly unwilling to say anymore in the subject.

Every one was staring at him and he realized he had been quiet for too long. "I'm sorry, you said your name was Sophie?"
"Yes sir, Sophie Wilson."
"And Paige is your sister." He said it more like a statement.
"Yes sir."

"But she's human?" his gamma, Allen, said, confusion coloring his voice.
"Yes sir, her mother was human."
"We don't have any humans living in this pack. You don't share the same mother?" Patrick asked.
"No sir, we- her mother was-" Sophie struggled over her words. As if it was difficult to talk about.

"It's alright, Sophie. Please don't worry about what your sister has done here. There will be no repercussions from it."
"Sir?" Patrick looked at him, his eyes full of questions.
"You may go Sophie." She mumbled a quick thank you and ran off after her sister.

"Nate?" Patrick started. Nathan smiled, his beta and gamma only called him Nate when they were alone and were upset with him. In front of the pack it was always 'Sir' or 'Alpha'. He turned and entered his office. Patrick and Allen followed him in.

"What the hell was that Nate? Who was she? And why can she hit you with no repercussions?"
"More important question, what do I have to do to be able to hit you with out repercussions?" Allen joked. Nathan sent an amused glare his way.
"That's a long story, and let's just say I deserved more than that for what I did to her."
"What does that supposed to mean? How do you know her?"
"Paige and I met while I was away. We were... intimate and things ended badly."
"Wait a second," Allen said, like he was putting something together. "She said "that's for Bali" That's Bali girl?" Allen said.
"Yes. That's Bali girl," he said sitting down in his chair.
"Damn. What are the odds of that?"
"Who's Bali girl?" Patrick asked.
"You remember the girl he was messed up about right after he got back? The one he said would hold his heart forever, or some type of bullshit."
"The human girl you were ready to go rouge for?" Patrick asked in disbelief. "The one that made you so upset you became reckless hoping a rouge would take you out? The one you almost killed your self over? That Bali girl?"
"Yeah." he said, looking down at his lap.
"Shit." Patrick muttered. Allen nodded his head in agreement.

"Except, she told me her name was Paige Robins." He wondered why she had given him a different name. Perhaps she didn't want to be connected to the pack in anyway. From what he remembered of her rants about how she grew up, that made the most sense. "Allen I need you to get me the file on the Wilson's. I need to know what's going on here." Allen nodded and left the room. He and Patrick were quite for a moment.

"Nate, you have to send her away," his beta said softly, "She can't be here. She'll ruin everything you've worked for."
"I can't."
"Then I'll do it. You've come this far, you do not need her to pull you down again. We barely got you out the last time."
"It was nothing she did to pull me down. That was my father."
"It doesn't matter. It's not like you can be with her. She's human. You need to find your mate. You need to find a Luna, a werewolf Luna who can help you run this pack."
"That's the thing," Nathan said, "Malcom says she our mate."

"That's not possible. She's human." Werewolves can only be mated to other werewolves. They can take humans as chosen mates but that was rare. An alpha would never be allowed to take a human as a chosen mate.
"Malcom says her wolf is dormant."
"That's not... are you sure this isn't wishful thinking. You already had Malcom the last time you met her. Are you sure he wasn't just wishing for old times?"

Malcom bristled at the insinuation "Wolves have no concept of 'wishful thinking'. There is what is and what is not. She is mate." Malcom said to him.
"Malcolm is sure. And to be honest I'm glad. I wanted it to be her, even back then." He said with a small smile on his face. "I thought I'd never see her again."

Patrick looked at the joy on Nathan's face and couldn't help but be happy for him, though he was scared for what this meant. The last time Nathan lost her, they almost lost him. He let out a soft sigh, "I'm guessing by the way she hit you she didn't feel the mate call." He said.
"Could it be that her anger over powered it?"
"I've never heard of that before, but I've also never heard of a dormant wolf before so I guess anything's possible."

Allen returned, with the Wilson file. It was smaller than he expected. "Well boss, like most files on the Summit Pack, it is quite thin and is mostly filled with what they themselves have told us and what they've done since joining us." Nathan let out a sigh.

All the files from the Summit Pack had been destroyed in the same rouge attack that took out most of the pack. The pack house had been burned taking almost everything and everyone with it. If they had gone digital like most of the other packs it would have been saved. But the Summit Pack Alpha had been old and reluctant to change. His mate and his son had been killed in a rouge attack years before and he had no one to take over.

Nathan took the file from Allen and flipped through it. It was small as Nathan said. Abysmally small. It contained the usual family information and individual family profiles. Paige's was only one page.

Age: 27
  Sex: Female
  Wolf:
  Parents: Michael and Sandra Wilson*
  Location: London, UK

The wolf box was left empty and there was an asterisk on the file and Nathan moved his eyes down to read it.

*Pack member is blood daughter of Michael Wilson and adopted daughter of Sandra Wilson. Birth mother is unknown, believed to be human.

"Well that's completely unhelpful." He handed to it Patrick. "Allen, go talk to any other pack members that were in Summit Pack with them. See if they know anything more. Pat, head to the library, see if you can find anything on dormant wolves. My last meeting is at three. Report on what you have then and well go from there."

"Yes Alpha" they said in unison and left his office. Despite his confusion Nathan couldn't help but be happy. Paige was back, and she was his mate.
