Chapter 7: Heading Home?
Previously: "Sky, I think Moonwhisper came to take you to your parents."
_____________________________________________________________________________
I looked over to Moonwhisper to see if this was true. Moonwhisper got excited as she jumped around with her tail wagging. Her happy barks told me we were right.
I don't really know how to feel. Should I be excited that I'm going to see my parents? Should I be scared? Should I be nervous? Should I be re-thinking this whole plan of following a random wolf to who knows where, to find the parents that I've never met?
When I look back over to Moonwhisper, I realize that I completely trust her. I don't know why. I've only known her for 10 minutes at the most.
Her happiness has soon infested me. I grin as Moon runs around the room, back to me, then around the room again. As she races around the room, her long pink tongue dangles out of her mouth. My heart beat faster and I couldn't keep a bright smile off my face. Excitement runs through me. "I'm going to see my parents," I whispered to myself. Now that I've said it out loud, it seemed to make it true.
I looked over at Eric and said, "Pack a bag. We're going to find my parents."
Somehow, my smile grew bigger. I heard Moonwhisper bark happily. "Let's go girl!" I called to her as I practically skipped down the hallway. She raced to my side.
Once we arrived in my room, I tossed a back pack on my bed. Doing this reminded me of Gran. Every time we stayed here at the cabin, we would go on adventures in the forest. . Gran would always help me pack the right stuff. We would have to pack our bags with food to eat while we were out because we usually didn't return to the cabin till it got dark.
When I had a few outfits and other necessities stuffed in, I think about what else I need. Right away, I think of Gram's diary. Since that's back in the kitchen though, I'll get it on my way out. Pulling out my suitcase, I search through it to see if I left anything in there. Instantly, I take out the scrap book from earlier and put it in the bag. Maybe I could show my parents some of these pictures. Then they'd see that they left me in good hands.
Thinking of pictures reminds me of my sketch pad. Of course! I am dying to try and draw Moon. With her black fur, bright blue markings and pick tongue hanging out of her mouth, it will soon be one of my favorite drawings.
I looked down at Moon, "Do you want to be in here, girl?" Noticing that I'm talking to her, she looks up at me, whines, and then lets out a bark as her tail wags again. "I'll take that as a yes."
Chuckling, I turn through the pages of my sketch pad. Perhaps I might even be able to sketch out my parents. Most of the pages are already filled with dozens of different couples that I'd imagined as my parents. Finally, I'll be able to draw them for real instead of just guessing.
I stuffed that in the bag and gave one final look around the room. It was hard to pack when I didn't know how long I'd be gone. "Guess this will have to do," I tell myself as I zip up the bag. I sling the bag over my shoulder and kneel down to be level with Moon. She instantly rushes over to me, excited for more attention.
Grinning, I cup her soft face in my hands and ask in a baby voice, "Are you ready to go Moon? Are you going to show me where my family is?" Moon becomes ecstatic. Her tail wags ninety miles an hour as she lets out joyful barks. She puts her paws on both of my shoulders as she smothers my face with slobbery kisses.
I can't contain my laughs as I try to push her off. Even when I got up from my couched position, she still jumped up to me, insistent on soaking me with slobber.
"Moon get off!" I manage to get out in between laughs. When she finally begins to calm down, we walk out of the room, then I shut the door behind us.
"Eric are you almost ready?" I called out as I headed for the kitchen. "Yep," he said as he walked in. He wore a backpack identical to mine. Opening different cabinets, I searched for the snack bars, while Eric opened the fridge for water bottles.
"This is just like old times," he said while putting the water in his bag. "Remember when we would go on adventures with Gran into the forest?"
Pulling out the box of snack bars, I nodded. "Yeah, that's just what I was thinking about earlier." I glanced down at Moon. "But instead of Gran leading us, Moon will." Moonwhisper barked in agreement. I smiled. Normally, whenever I mentioned Gram, I began to feel sad. Now, Moon makes it better.
"Are we ready to go?" Eric asks. Scanning the room, I look for something that we've forgotten. I shook my head. "I think so." With that, we walked out the front door and locked it behind us.
"Now what do we do?" Eric asked as we just stood there in the yard.
"Umm, I guess we follow Moon."
I knelt down and faced the big wolf. Cupping her big furry face in my hands, I whispered, "Ok, Moon, now's your time. Show us where my parents are." As I stood up, Moon pelted off in the direction of the woods. Eric and I looked at each other, then sprinted off in the direction where Moon ran.
"Wait for us, Moon!" I called out. She must have heard me, because a moment later, Moon emerged from the forest line, her pink tongue hanging out of her mouth. With her head cocked to the side, she looked confused, like she didn't know what she did wrong. The both of us laughed when we saw her. Once we caught up with Moon, I said to her, "How about we go at I little slower pace."
Without another word, Moon turned around and walked toward the destination at a brisk pace. The two of us trailed behind her, into the thick, green forest. In this place, there were no trails or paths that were cleared. So with every step I took, I different plant slapped my leg.
Up above, the hot sun glared down at me. Within minutes, sweat appeared on my face, and I had to pause to put my hair up. It took me a couple tries, because I wasn't used to having hair so long. It was going to take me a while to get used to all of these changes.
When I was finally satisfied with my hair, hurried to catch up with the Moon and Eric. Moon was still walking confidently towards our unknown destination. Eric was trailing her, watching for me.
I brushed shoulders with Eric as I caught up with him. As we walked, Eric turned to me and asked, "Who are you going to be for this quest, Sky?"
I gave him a weird look. "What do you mean?"
"Remember when we went on adventures with Gran? You would always pretend to be some kind of princess. I would always be a knight," he explained.
I nodded, remembering how much fun we had back then. "Yeah, I remember. Gran would always be something magical, like a witch or wizard."
Eric chuckled, "Yeah, she was the best. Anyways, back to the original question. Who will you be for this quest?"
I pondered that question for a moment, then decided to go with my favorite pretend princess. "I'll be Princess Rose." Almost every time we came out here, I was Princess Rose.
"What about you? Which character will you be this time?" Unlike me, Eric chose a different character almost every time. He never ceased to surprise me.
Eric tapped his chin as he thought. His characters were always a little more detailed and original than mine were. While it took me about five seconds to decide, Eric stayed silent for a few minutes.
Finally, he looked over to me and said, "I'm going to change this up a little. Instead of being a knight like I always was, I'm going to be a village boy named Conner. Conner has all the qualities every prince should have, but he wasn't born into the royal family."
"Oh, and his best friend's name is Victor." he added.
I rolled my eyes at how much thought Eric put into this. Then I asked, "What is our mission today?" Eric would always think of what our special missions were too.
"Rose's father was put under a spell be Rose's evil step mother." We are trying to find a secret garden that holds the only cure for him." Eric paused to gesture at Moon. "Our faithful fox friend, Toivo, is leading us to the garden."
As if Moon knew we were talking about her, she stopped and turned around. The look on her face seemed to say, "Really?" She looked unimpressed. We let out chuckles when we saw her face, then continued on with our little game.
* * *
We traveled most of the day, only stopping for a dinner made up of snack bars and berries. As it grew darker, the both of us agreed that this was the longest trip through the forest we've been on. We'd never had to spend the night in the forest without a tent, so we were worried about where we were going to sleep. Moon solved that problem when she led us to a cave.
"How did we miss this when we were little?" Eric asked as he tentatively stepped into the cave. "This would have been the best place to go for adventures!"
"I'm not sure," I say quietly. "Maybe it was because we weren't supposed to be here." Was there something already in here? Did something live in here? Is that why Gran didn't want us in here? "Maybe you should go first," I tell Eric as I shove him forward.
"No, no, no!" Eric screams as he quickly runs back out. While we were both determined not to be the first in the cave, Moonwhisper had already gone ahead. We didn't even notice until we heard a loud bark come from the cave.
"I think Moon just told us to suck it up and get inside," I said with a nervous chuckle.
"I guess we have no choice now," Eric said. I simply nodded and stepped into the gloomy cave. As we go further in the cave, the light slowly recedes until I can't see. The cave has so many paths and turns. If it weren't for Moon, we'd be completely lost. It becomes very quiet, and all I can here are the footsteps of me and Eric and the scrapes of Moon's claws against the hard ground.
My thoughts begin to wonder. What if it's not Moon's claws though? Is some other creature? What if it's a dangerous creature? My heart beats faster and my breathing quickens. Even if this isn't a dangerous animal, I still wouldn't know how to get out of this cave. I can't even remember how many turns we've made in the last few minutes. If this isn't Moon, we're in trouble. The claws make their way closer to me.
I am just about to scream, when I see that this animal is just Moon. Letting out a big sigh of relief, I mutter, "I wish there was a little more light in here."
Then without warning, Moon's blue marks begin to glow again. It makes me jump, but I immediately notice that I can see again. Now that I can see, I look for Eric. There he is, about three feet behind me. As he hurries to catch up, I hear him say under his breath, "It just keeps getting weirder and weirder."
Gently, I nudge his shoulder. "Are my eyes glowing again?" He stares at my face for a second, then nods his head vigorously. "Yep, they definitely are." Letting out a laugh, I ask, "Does it freak you out?" He nods his head in response.
"Well at least we can see better now." Eric snaps his head to me and gives me this confused look. "It's not that much better. I can only see you and Moonwhisper." He hesitates. "What do you see?"
Shrugging, I look around. The cave's not dark at all anymore. "I can everything clearly. I don't know why you are having so much trouble. Have you checked your vision lately?"
He shakes his head and smiles. "It's probably another super power your new wolf friend gave you." I pause and think about it. Was he right? As soon as Moon's fur lit up, I could see fine. Before I could think about it more, I noticed that Moon had stopped walking and was laying down.
"I guess it is bed time," Eric said with a chuckle.
"Great. I'm looking forward to sleeping on the stone hard ground," I grumbled. We sat on the ground and took out our waters for one last sip before going to sleep. Then we set out bags on the ground and laid our heads on the bags.
With the hard, cold ground beneath me, I can't imagine how I am going to get any sleep. I twist and turn without managing to get comfortable.
After what felt like forever, I finally found the right spot.
I whisper to Eric, "Good night, Eric." His response was a soft snore. Smiling, I called out to Moon. "Good night, Moon." She whimpered back in response.
"What's wrong Moon? Are you having trouble sleeping too?" Instead of answering, Moon got up, then wedged her way between my arms and laid down. "That's what you wanted, huh?" She licked my hand, then snuggled closer. I wrapped my arms tighter around her. Maybe this wasn't such a bad way to go to sleep I think to myself as my eyes begin to close.
