Chapter 6: Moonwhisper
When I get to the room, my gaze falls to the burnt nightstand. I had completely forgotten about Gran's diary! After I was finished reading it last night, I put it in the drawer. "Please be ok, please be ok," I mutter under my breath as I approach the table. With my hands covering my eyes, I slowly open the drawer. After the count of three, I lift my hands and let out a huge sigh of relief. It's ok! The cover it a little burnt but the pages are only singed on the side. I hug the book to my chest and rush back into the kitchen.
The first thing I see when I get in there is two empty bowls sitting in front of Eric, who has a full mouth. Normally, I'd be mad at him for stealing my food, but I'm too happy from finding this book to get mad at him again. As I sit down, Eric swallows his bite and mutters a quiet, "Sorry." I wave it off and slide the book over to Eric.
He looks it over for a moment then looks back at me, waiting for me to explain. I take a big breath and say, "This is what Gran told you to give to me. This is her diary." Eric looks from the book, to me and says, "Sky, I don't know if you should be showing me this. It looks personal and I don't want to butt in or-" "Eric, I want you to see this. You need to read this," I interrupt him. Without another word, he nods his head and begins to read. Neither of us can resist a good story. I watch his face carefully as he reads through my life story.
For some reason, this makes me nervous. What will he think of my parents? Will he believe this story? I continue to wonder until he sets the book down and closes it. Before saying anything, the first thing he does is lean over to give me a hug.
"You must be so excited, Sky," he says over my shoulder. My mouth is open as I come out of the hug. He actually believes it? Does this mean I should believe it too? My heart flutters with hope.
"Excited about what?" I ask cautiously.
"About everything! You just found out about your parents and that you'll be able to see them!" He says with a big smile on his face. "Why do I seem happier than you?"
"Well, at first I didn't believe it," I answered. Eric gets serious and says, "Sky, Gran wouldn't lie about this. That's not like her. I nod, and a wave of happiness and excitement comes over me. I'm going to see my parents soon!
Before I drift off into my own little world, Eric pulls me out of it with a question. "Isn't this design on the cover what your necklace looks like?" I nod and pull off my necklace. When I put it on the cover, the two look identical. Suddenly, my necklace lights up begins to glow blue. My mouth drops open and when I look at Eric, he has the same expression. "Sky, your eyes are glowing again," he says in a shaky voice.
Before I could get up to see for myself, we hear a scratching noise at the door. Eric and I sit there and look and each other, waiting to see who will get the door. Finally, I get off of my stool, then push Eric off of his. I deem it his turn since it's my birthday and I put out the fire. He cautiously walks over to the door and grasps the handle.
As soon as he opens the door, a terrified look comes over his face. Then he takes five startled steps back and trips over the side table. At first, I am very confused by his actions. Why does he look so panicked? My thoughts are interrupted by a deep growl. My heart freezes as a huge dark wolf prowls through the doorway. It has ink black fur, and neon blue streaks throughout its fur. I had little time to take in its beauty though. This animal was still making its way toward Eric, while letting out an intimidating growl.
Without thinking, I slowly walk towards the wolf. I guess I'd have to play hero once again. As I made my way towards the big wolf, I felt no fear. Just excitement and anticipation to get to this creature. I'm not sure why I didn't feel afraid. Any normal person would probably be terrified if a wolf just walked into their house. 'You're probably not the most normal person around after what you found out yesterday,' my brain tells me.
Ignoring my brain, I shake myself back to what's happening right in front of me. Currently, I am about an arms-length away from the wolf and it has stopped going towards and is facing me. Now that this wolf is right in front of me, I can get a really good look at it. Just like the neon blue running through its fur, there is a blue moon crescent surround its left eye. When I see that, I immediately think of my necklace and the design on Gram's diary. It's identical to both designs. This raises more questions in my head. Why has this design been showing up more lately? Why isn't this wolf growling at me? Why do I feel like a trust this creature? Why do I feel the need to reach out and stroke it?
My hand gradually moves over to the wolf's dark fur. When my hand makes contact with its silky soft fur, it leans into my touch. A smile makes its way to my face. This isn't the mean, vicious creature I thought it to be. Instead, it seems sweet and lovable. I scoot myself closer to the wolf as it sits down. As my hand moves over its back, the blue in its fur seems to diminish until the only color left is black. Startled by this, I pull my hand away from the wolf, trying to figure out what I did.
Before I could answer my own question, the wolf lifted its paw onto my hand, looked at me, and whined. I looked at its face and it seemed to say, "Why did you stop? Pet me more please." I obeyed the wolf's silent request and stroked its fur. It seemed quite happy with this, and rolled over for a belly rub. At the sight of this, I let out a laugh. Here I am in Gram's cabin with a huge wolf rolled over on its back, waiting for a belly rub. I looked over at Eric to see what he thought of this once "vicious" animal. He looked absolutely stunned. This made me laugh more.
"What's that face for?" I ask after I finished laughing.
"Why did it growl at me? All I did was open the door. Why does it like you so much? Why did it have blue fur? Why did the blue disappear? Why did your eyes stop glowing?" he asks.
It takes me a minute to comprehend all the questions. When I get to the last one, I stand up and go to the bathroom. As I look in the mirror, I see that Eric is right. My eyes are back to their normal color. Then it hits me. My eyes glowed the same color as the wolf's blue fur.
Rushing back into the living room, I quickly ask, "Eric, when did my eyes stop glowing?" He thought for a moment, "It was around the same time the wolf's blue fur disappeared."
I was right! "I think that the wolf and I are somehow connected. I know that sounds really weird, but I'm not afraid of her at all and she seems to be fine around me," I explained.
"Her?" he asked. "How do you know it's a girl?"
"That's what I'm trying to tell you! I don't know how I know, it just feels right. We're connected somehow. I think that's why she growled at you, but she likes me. And her fur and my eyes can't just be a coincidence. They're the exact same colors." As I try to explain this to Eric, I find myself pacing back and forth. Needing something to do, I sit by the wolf and begin to stroke her.
"I'm not trying to prove you wrong or anything," he says, "but if you know so much about this creature, what's her name?"
This stumped me for a minute. I looked to the wolf to see if she could give me some sort of answer. She simply laid there and stared hard at me like she wanted me to read her mind. It was as if she was trying tell me, but I just couldn't hear. Almost like a whisper. Since my "telepathic powers" weren't going to work right now, I thought to her physical features. My memories immediately took me to her blue fur. Before it faded, I saw the crescent moon surrounding her eye. That's it!
Hesitantly, I answered, "I think it's Moonwhisper." My answer was met with three short barks from the wolf as she stood up excitedly. "I think that answers your question," I said with a smile.
"At least one of them. We won't go through them all, but what is Moonwhisper doing here?" he asked.I looked to my wolf friend once again, testing out my "telepathic powers" for the second time. Sadly, they failed me again.
"Don't you think it's a little strange that all of this is happening on your sixteenth birthday? It's almost like this was plan-"Eric cut himself short. With his eyes wide and mouth open, I could practically see the light bulb light up above his head. Without finishing his sentence, he hurried into the kitchen, then came back with Gram's journal.
He flipped open to one of the pages I read last night, and pointed to one of the sentences for me to read. Squinting at the small writing, I leaned closer and read,
Once she turns sixteen, someone will come to bring her back to us.
I stared at the words my father once said. My mouth dropped open. Could this really be true? I looked at Eric with the question on my face and he nodded. "Sky, I think Moonwhisper came to take you to your parents."
