Chapter 4
'YOU DID WHAT?!', exclaimed Neena as she toppled over the couch from laughter and I mentally face palmed myself as I watched her thrive off of my misery while deeply regretting telling her about what happened in class.
Neena sat up, took a deep breath and looked at me with a collected face only to erupt into fits of laughter again to which I reacted to with a pillow thrown at her face.
'Okay, okay! I'm sorry but seriously Omi, you bailed on him with the most stupid excuse!', she said out of breath.
'I didn't know what to do! I panicked! He just stood there in all of his Disney prince glory and then out of all the names in the world his just had to be Ethan!', I exclaimed running a hand through my hair only to get it stuck in my so-called wavy hair. (Note to self, screw the curly girl method)
'Wait, how is any of that a problem?', she asked confused and I remembered that I'd never told her about Karthick's full name.
'Karthick's middle name...It's Ethan', I replied in a whisper and that made her sit upright with no trace of playfulness.
'Oh Omi', she said and opened her arms wide open for me to fall into, which I gladly accepted.
'I'm not ready to have another male best friend. I can't even think about having another one', I said.
'How do you even know if he's gonna be close to you?', she asked trying to make sense of my dilemma.
'I just do and he showed all those signs of wanting to get my attention', I said and felt a tear prick at the corner of my eye.
'As in?'
'The noticing me even though I never did, the having my back and then wanting to know more about me', I said.
'Isn't that called being friendly?', she asked confused.
'Outwardly, yes but it's a freaking pattern of all the boys in my life. None of them who start off like this end up being just friends, they become more than that and sometimes even out of hand', I said and shuddered as I recalled one guy in particular.
'What made a Karthick different?', she asked 'and I paused for a second before speaking
'His sole purpose in becoming friends with me was in his terms to 'save me'. So, I could never see him in a romantic way. He's always been my savior or as I used to call him 'my angel friend'.
'He must have been overwhelmed when he heard it', she said and I laughed as I remembered the day I had told him.
'He only knew about it until it was really late but he said that he didn't know the term but that he always knew I had seen him as 'my safe person'. That's what he called it. We had a horrible fight and when we made up he said he felt guilty for putting me in a vulnerable position even though he was supposed to keep me safe', I said and stopped before I opened that door of emotions.
'Are you afraid that Ethan is going to be a savior for you just like Karthick was?', she asked and I nodded.
'Isn't that a good thing?', she asked but I shook my head.
'I'd start comparing him and I know I'll do something stupid', I said.
'Well if it's a pattern for the other guys like you said then why can't you stop it?', she asked trying to understand my messed up brain. That was one thing I loved about Neena, she never thought anything I said or did was crazy but instead tried to understand and if not, she'd just be there for me.
'I can't stop it because it's not my fault. I'm basically the same person to every guy I've ever met. Awkward and shy at the start and then crazy and sometimes even flirty towards the end. It's how they see me, it depends on them and I just know that this Ethan person is gonna end up in that spider web of all the guys I owe a relationship!', I said and she pulled me close for another hug.
'I don't know much about patterns Omi, but I do know about chances. You said it yourself, he's a Disney prince and how often do you think that's gonna happen to any of us?', she asked.
'Are you forgetting the fact that I'm Indian and that my parents have this thing against dating?', I asked with an alarmed expression to which she only laughed.
'Has that ever stopped you? As far as I can understand you went with the pattern and besides you don't even know what he's gonna end up as. Talk to him, Omi. This could be your chance to actually do what you came here to do; a fresh start', she said and I sighed knowing that she was right.
'I was overthinking, wasn't I?', I asked.
'Kind of'. 'Okay'
'But seriously gimme the deets about this prince', she said with a raised eyebrow.
'The deets? Seriously? Don't make me tattle to Declan', I said.
'Oh Dec knows that his girl appreciates the male... physical... appearance', she said choosing her words slowly and I rolled my eyes at her.
'PLEEEEAAASEEE OMMMIIIII', she whined.
'Sea glass eyes, dark hair that falls in curls to his neck and that oh so gorgeous tall-athletic figure', I said in a breath and she squealed.
'I swear if you don't start talking to him I will become your fairy Godmother and bibi-dee-bobity-boo you into his arms', she said to which she was greeted with another pillow to the face.
