Chapter 24

'Whatcha doing?', chirped Sumi's voice through my phone. It wasn't easy to talk like we used to anymore because of the different time zones and work.

Sumi was in London pursuing her masters in archaeology while also interning at one of the world's most current famous architects; Pierce Pharaoh.

To be honest though, I never really knew who he was until Sumi shattered my eardrums one early morning to tell me she had been accepted in their scholarship program. It's not because I didn't care about Mr. Pharaoh but because I didn't really care about any famous architects the way Sumi fangirled over them; I just knew who they were because I had to study about them in our 3rd-year history class.

'I'm researching a synopsis for my thesis', I said rummaging through my notebook.

'Oh, it's started?', she asked.

'Sort of. We're supposed to send in the synopsis this week and I'm not sure if I have a good topic', I frowned looking at my best friend.

'You? Scared about a topic presentation? You're out of your mind', she scoffed.

'M.G isn't Green, Sumi', I smiled bitterly.

'But you're still Salome. The girl who can't mess up research papers even if she wrote it in her sleep', she scoffed and I shook my head in amusement.

'What do you have?', she asked.

'History of religious architecture and something that can help me link their evolution', I mumbled.

'You'll find that something', she encouraged and I smiled at her.

'You don't think Pierce Pharaoh would have some good books over there would you?', I asked.

'Are you asking me to steal from him?', she asked widening her already huge eyes.

'No, I'm asking you to ask', I laughed.

'I'll try', she said with that sing-song voice which meant that it wasn't a promise but that she'd give it a shot. 99% of the time though, she always came through which is why I knew I had nothing to worry about.

'You're his favorite anyways', I mused.

'I do find it strange though. He's always checking on me and just providing me with anything I want and drags me almost everywhere', she said blankly.

'I heard he's single', I grinned.

'Your point being?', she hissed.

'You're the one who keeps going on and on about how handsome he looks for someone in their 50s', I laughed.

'Repeat those last words, Omi', she said rolling her eyes at me.

'So?', I asked with a wicked grin.

'He has a son who looks like he's our age. I'm too young to be a mother to someone like him', she said tiredly.

'Ah, so you have thought about it', I cackled.

'I do sincerely wish you were here so that I could kick you', she said through her teeth and I made sure to laugh excessively just to annoy her some more.

'He's a total brat', she said.

'Who?'

'His son. Remember how I told you that I met him and he-'

'-completely ignored you. Yeah, I remember', I finished and she shrugged.

'We could ship him off somewhere', I said and she lifted her arm as if she'd punch me through the phone screen.

'Enough making fun of me. How's Ethan', she asked with her wicked smile.

'He's fine', I replied with a smirk.

'Oh I know he's fine', she said and I couldn't help but laugh again.

'Why haven't you taken a picture of him yet. I need to see this Disney prince who's captured the ice queen's heart', she said with a dramatic tone.

'Don't overdo it', I said and she stuck her tongue out at me.

'I don't know. We've never really had a moment to take a picture. We mostly talk or work-'

'-BORING', she cut in.

'Well, what would you do?', I challenged.

'Anything but what you're doing with him', she laughed.

'He's just a friend, Sumi', I sighed.

'I don't think he is. Not by the way you smile these days. You look...whole', she completed and smiled lovingly at me.

'I do feel wholesome', I admitted which was something I hadn't felt in over two years.

'Why can't you even like him?', she asked.

'I thought I told you I'm horrible with choosing men', I scowled.

'I thought you said Ethan came to you', she said and my ears perked up.

'Yeah but-'

'You dint choose him. He came to you, he searched for the girl in the crystal shop and stood by her side to get her attention. I don't know what kind of writer you are but that definitely sounds like someone out to get a girl', she shrugged.

'I don't know Sumi. Even if he did like me, how am I supposed to date someone who's not Indian? I don't even know his family background', I said and she sighed.

'Why can't you just ask?'

'It's never been important when we're together', I mused

'There's your answer', she smiled proudly and I shook my head at her.

'Peter's here', I said and caught her attention once more.

'Oh, someone's the center of attraction these days', she teased.

'I'm still a magnet for drama'

'Did you talk?', she asked and I told her everything that happened between us.

'Not that I know Peter or anything but I never really thought he was your type even though he seems to get the better of you. He's clearly smart like your rival. You don't need a rival, Omi; You need an ally', she said and I felt my heart skip a beat.

'When did you get so wise?', I asked and she grinned proudly.

'Ah, gone are the days you thought the opposite of chicks were-'

'NO OMI NO!', she exclaimed and frantically started to plug in her headphones while I toppled over with laughter.
