Chapter 1

Everyone has that one thing which catches their eye no matter what they're doing or how they feel. Seeing it transports you back to the first time that particular object made you feel excited or happy or it could even be a bearer of sad times.

For me that item of joy hung above me, gently reflecting the rays of the setting sun.

The crystals made a soft clink as they came into contact with each other, allowing it to scatter its rainbow drops across the room and onto my skin. I've always found crystals to be interesting, not just for their beauty but for the way it could reflect something.

Usually, reflecting meant to direct light to another direction as if it were repelling it but a crystal repelled it by turning it into a masterpiece.

I wish I could do that. To learn how to repel the negative thoughts and transform them into something beautiful. As fast as the philosophy entered my brain it was countered by my own mocking voice about how  tired I probably was to be having deep thoughts about crystals.

Nevertheless, my fingers found themselves lightly brushing across the long strips and that was when I realized that I was being watched so I quickly turned around.

'Are you interested in them?'

He looked older than me but there was a trace of boyish charm lurking behind his playful expression. I never really appreciated a boyish behavior because, in my experience, they'd most likely end up being immature.

'Yes', I replied trying not to feel intimidated by his towering posture even though he stood at a one-arm distance from me.

'How do you sell them?', I asked.

'Per piece and in dozens', he replied.

'I just need one', I said.

'Is it for jewelry?', he asked and I found myself in a state of anxious confusion because when it came to anything that shimmered or sparkled, I couldn't really make up my mind and what was worse was that I had someone waiting on me until I could.

'Uh-'

'How about as an ornate?', he asked with a soft smile as if he understood the position he had put me in.

'That would be fine', I replied and watched as he walked over to take down a long piece from the collection I was admiring.

'It's overwhelming sometimes to make a choice over the things you love', he said without looking at me and I felt a smile creep up my face at his kind words but yet again my mind countered back by reminding me that his job was to be kind to customers and that I mustn't make up the start of a love story.

'You go to MG right?', he asked as he wrapped the crystal in bubble wrap.

Cue the start of my brain making up a 'secret admirer' story.

'Yeah, how did you know?', I asked and I could hear the alarms sounding inside my head, except I couldn't tell whether it was good or bad.

'You're in my literature class', he said and paused for a second to look at me which was when I noticed that his eyes were green mixed with blue which made them look like sea glass. In my defense, if you had lived in a country where the majority of people have eyes in shades of brown, you'd be mesmerized by his fairytale eyes too.

'Oh', was all that my intelligent brain could conjure up while recollecting and reminding myself that this was a continent where I'd see these colors almost every day and that I had to get a grip of myself.

'I guess I'll see you tomorrow', he said as he handed over the package and while I paid I tried to make a mental picture of him in my mind but all I could remember were his eyes.

The sound of another customer entering was my cue to leave, 'I'll look out for you', I said and with a smile, he left to attend the store.

As I walked out of the store I couldn't help but think why he remembered me when I didn't even know him. Or maybe he was just one of those people who noticed everyone. Anyway, it wasn't until I reached my apartment that I realized I didn't even know his name, all I had were those sea-glass eyes.
