CHAPTER FOUR.
Lila gave a stretch as she felt her chair softly shake, she slowly opened her eyes to the quiet lounge room. She looked up at the blinds seeing the darkness seep in, she slowly rose up to her feet before her recliner quickly disappeared into the floor. Her pillow and blanket sank with the chair.
A four seater lounge returned in its place.
Lila rubbed her eyes as she shuffled to towards her bedroom, she barely had a chance to push open her bedroom door when she noticed a symbols of hands spelling out the word Memphis.
"Now?" She sighed.
A row of hand gestures appeared on her bedroom door. Elvis won't wait.
She refrained from making any loud noises as she pushed open her bedroom door, she looked at her bed as a red and white 1950 polka dot halter neck dress laid flat, a pair of white 1950 wheels floated down onto her bed, a white belt appeared around the waist of the dress and a 1950 red and white polka dot headband laid on her pillow.
Lila pursed her lips together; she knew she had no choice.
She knew Boss liked when she followed his instructions before he interjected, this time it felt slightly different. This was the first time Lila had to dress the part.
Lila stepped out of her bathroom, the red and white polka dot headband carefully positioned over her victory rolls styled black hair, her nails painted red, red lipstick covered her lips. The white belt showed off her curves as she tiptoed in her heels down the hallway.
She looked at the front door seeing hand gestures appear. He'll forgive you.
Lila waved her hand over the words forcing them to disappear as she used her other hand to open the front door. She stepped out onto the porch; she felt the breeze of the hot air as she closed her front door.
Her flickering front yard forced itself to stop flickering as Lila stepped down the grass covered path.
She ignored her mailbox as it gently hummed to itself.
Lila looked up at the quiet street, she watched as the lights in the neighbourhood flicked off. She smiled to herself slightly as she crossed the road, she watched as the orchid covered fence line part just enough for her to step through.
She allowed the soft grass to gently squash under the light pressure of her heels as she walked up to the front door, the door gently swayed itself open.
"Harry?" She called out as she stepped through the house.
Lila squinted her eyes slightly as a light flicked on as she walked down the hallway.
"Harry?" Lila shielded her eyes from another light as it flicked on, she kept her gaze low as she followed the carpet down to Harry's bedroom.
The bedroom door swayed open, she forced herself to look into the bedroom as the light brightly flicked on.
She allowed her eyes to adjust before speaking again "Harry."
Harry laid twisted amongst his pile of blankets and pillows; posters of Elvis Presley decorated his walls; the various Elvis' turned their attention to Lila as she stepped closer to the bed.
Harry's bed gently shook as Lila stopped by the bed's edge.
"Hmmm...." Harry groaned as he sank his head under two pillows.
The bed shook again.
"Hmmmm....." Harry groaned again as he gripped a blanket tighter around his body.
The bed shook for a third time.
Lila watched as Harry tried to fight against his bed, she could tell he hated his bed waking him up.
"Do something worth remembering." Spoke one of the Elvis posters in what seemed to be an authentic thick southern accent.
Harry sighed as he laid in bed.
Lila seemed curious by her friend as she continued to watch him.
"Hmmm..." Harry smiled as he groaned.
"Harry" Lila interrupted him.
"Shit!, What?" Harry startled awake as he tried to untwist himself from his blankets.
Lila couldn't help but let a small laugh slip through her red painted lips.
"Man, you look pretty." He took sight of her beauty.
"And your naked." Lila sat down on the edge of his bed "In front of the King."
"Not naked, I'm covered in blankets." Harry corrected her.
Lila rolled her eyes.
Harry watched as four numbers appeared at the side of his bed, 04.35, he sank back into his pillows and blankets.
"Do you want to find Elvis or not?"
Harry propped himself up on his elbows "Can Elvis wait until at least six?" before dropping back onto his bed.
"Elvis might but Boss can't. Do you want this magazine or not?" Lila rose to her feet.
Harry groaned as he yawn "Alright." He pulled the blanket over his bed.
Lila rolled her eyes as she walked out of the room, the bedroom door swayed closed. She made her way back out of the house, the lights flicked off behind her with each step.
When she returned out to the soft grass, the front door softly closed shut.
She looked up at the dark sky, watching as stars twinkled and clouds moved past the new moon as it's blue tint attempts to shine down.
It took less than ten minutes for the front door to open again.
Lila turned her attention away from the night sky, she looked at Harry as he stepped through the door.
His dual coloured red and black hair naturally slicked back into a pompadour. He stood proudly in a black and white striped shirt which peeked from his black jacket, the black pants kept the shirt tucked in, his lace less brogues covered his white socks.
She seemed impressed by his look "Let's go to Memphis!" She beamed as she bounced on the ball of her feet.
Harry stepped towards Lila; he reached his hand out to her. She placed her hand into his, together they stepped through the gap of the orchids and walked down the street.
Their walk to Memphis wasn't a long one; it only took them two hours by foot.
Memphis wasn't a place instead it was a church; the words Welcome to Memphis sat in a faded shade of pink above a double wooden door.
Memphis was one of the rare buildings that looked exactly like a building from Earth 1, nothing about it looked like it belonged in Earth 0.26. Memphis didn't shake or flicker, it didn't move by itself, nor did it make a sound.
Harry and Lila grabbed a door handle each and pushed open the church doors.
The inside of the church was near bare expect for a drum kit, three guitars and 1950's microphone on the low rise stage.
They walked into the silent church; their footsteps echoed on the wooden floorboards.
Neither of them had entered Memphis before, it was the only place that only the esteemed performers and guests were hand selected by an anonymous source.
Harry's jaw dropped as he stopped in front of the stage, he recognised one of the guitars; a 1955 Martin D-28, a leather strap blazed with Elvis Presley. "This...How..." He dropped to his knees as he praised the famous guitar "Sweet beauty."
Lila stood in the middle of the church; she closed her eyes for a moment.
She allowed herself to imagine the atmosphere of the church.
The screaming fans, the loudness of the instruments and his singing voice.
A smile formed on her red lips.
Harry turned his attention to Lila as she swayed herself to the music playing in her head. He watched her as she kept her eyes closed, she parted her lips just enough for her breath to escape through as the music continued to play through her head.
Lila reached for the mid-length of the skirt of her dress, she gently pressed that around her body as she began to slowly twirl around the church floor.
Harry smiled as he watched, he had never seen this side of Lila in the years he had known her.
He couldn't hear the song playing in Lila's mind as he rose to his feet, he softly shuffled towards her "When you walk through a storm." He began to sing "Hold your head up high." He watched as Lila stopped twirling, she swayed the skirt of her dress around her legs "And don't be afraid." He watched as her red lips formed into a smile, he gently placed his hands around her waist "Of the dark, at the end of a storm." He gently swayed with her, she moved her hands away from her skirt and placed them over his shoulders. "Is a golden sky and the sweet silver song of a lark." He felt her forehead lean against his as she kept her eyes closed.
Together they swayed; Lila began to hum the tune of You'll never walk alone. She slowly slid her hands up Harry's face and over his ears, he kept his eyes open as he heard the music Lila was playing in her head, the very same song he was trying to sing.
Together they sang "Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain." As they swayed around the church "Though your dreams be tossed and blown." They stopped singing as the tune played Elvis' vocals in their heads.
Harry and Lila stayed with their foreheads against each other as they swayed, he kept his eyes open as he watched Lila was curiosity, watching as her eyes fluttered as she kept them closed, watched as her lips twitched closed before opening into a smile, he watched as tears began to roll down her cheeks.
Harry carefully lifted one hand from her waist, he wiped her tears away, she kept her forehead against his.
He rested his eyes for a moment as he allowed their footsteps trying to guide them around the room, he listened to the music that filled his and Lila's mind.
Neither had noticed a person stepping into the church, neither had noticed what the person was wearing; rolled up jeans covered their legs, a tailored jacket with a velvet collar covered a plain white shirt while a drape jacket completed their sense of fashion, their black lace up shoes allowed their white socks to peak out over the top of their ankles, their yellow, white, purple and black dyed mohawk proudly stood curled on top with the side of their head shaven.
Harry and Lila were lost in the music as they hummed in unison, they swayed as they lost themselves in the moment.
The person brought their index finger up to their lips, the room went silent; the echoes of the footsteps stopped, the music playing in Harry and Lila's head stopped.
Harry gently moved his head away from Lila's hands, he noticed the person staring at them.
Lila slowly opened her eyes; she broke out of Harry's soft grip. She stepped over to the person "Ruffles?"
Ruffles shook their head before signing it's the only disguise I was allowed to use.
Lila thought carefully as she looked at her hands, she silently prayed her sentence went the way she hoped as she used her hands to string together her sentence. Matorica?
Ruffles in disguise nodded their head.
Lila looked at Ruffles, she wrapped her arms around Ruffles. Ruffles sunk into Lila's arms "it's been years." She carefully whispered into Ruffles' ear.
Harry watched with curiosity; his footsteps broke the silence as he stepped towards the two of them.
Ruffles pulled out of Lila's arms, looked at Harry.
Lila tried to sign as quick as she could without confusing her lettering this is Harry, his helping me.
"Wow!? Ruffles. Look at you." Harry stared in astonishment, he had only meet Ruffles once and that was when Ruffles was at the beginning of their career.
Lila couldn't help but let a giggle slip form her lips as Ruffles raised an eyebrow than shook their head.
"Harry, this is Matorica. They loved Ruffles and..." Lila began.
Ruffles shrank knee high before shifting into their green creature form, leaving the mohawk as is while their clothes uncomfortably sat on their body.
"Woah!" Harry felt like his mind had just been blown.
Lila signed to Matorica Why are you here?
Matorica looked up at Lila before returning with I'm Elvis' opening act, seems the legend himself loves my act. Though I do have to keep it tame.
Lila let another giggle slip.
Harry didn't understand, he had never been taught sign language before.
Lila looked at Harry "Matorica is a friend of Elvis'"
"Has it come to stop us?"
Lila scrunched up her face in slight annoyance "They. They aren't here to stop us, just to make sure their doing their job and it isn't affected." She returned her attention to Matorica before signing Can we see him?
If you can get past the Colonel. Matorica responded.
"So, Elvis is here? Here, here?" Harry's voice almost stung Matorica's ears.
Lila quickly hushed him; she returned her attention to Matorica Where would we find him?
Matorica took a second to allow the quietness to wash over them before leading Harry and Lila through the church.
"Lila, if half-breeds are deaf than how can they perform?" Harry curiously asked.
Lila kept her calm as she answered him "It's the way it vibrates around them, there's just something about the way the half breeds move with music. Their voice somehow matches the level of the instruments while the half-breeds just feel it. It's so magical to watch. You have to watch one of them perform." She praised the half breeds.
Matorica lead Harry and Lila through the hallway of the back of the church, the three of them past several closed doors. Matorica stopped in front of a closed door and turned their attention to Lila before signing Goodluck.
Lila signed thank you, she watched as Matorica returned to their appearance of Ruffles before walking away as if power ran through their body.
Harry kept his curious gaze on Ruffles, he couldn't believe how scarily close Matorica had made their appearance.
"Now or never." Lila breathed.
Harry pulled his attention to the closed door as Lila softly knocked four times. The two of them waited.
