Chapter Five
The door opened enough for a chubby man in a brown suit with a string tie hanging from around the collar of his white shirt, his cowboy hat squashed between the door and the door frame.
He looked Lila and Harry up and down finding disgust in the two standing at the doorway.
Harry swallowed hard; the man looked eerily like Elvis' manager Colonel Tom Parker.
"We're friends of Elvis." Lila calmly spoke.
A Dutch accent pushed through as Colonel Tom Parker opened his mouth "Elvis doesn't have friends."
Lila briefly managed to catch a glimpse of a rhinestone jumpsuit moving.
"Let them in, Tom." A southern accent coolly suggested.
Harry's jaw dropped; the accent sounded just like the one his posters used.
Colonel Tom Parker closed the door.
Harry and Lila watched as they listened.
"I said let them in" The southern accent didn't yell but there some a hint of loudness in his tone.
The door opened again.
"Oh, my Elvis." The words spilled from Harry's lips.
Sitting on a leather three seater lounge was a man in a white rhinestone jumpsuit, his black hair gelled back into a pompadour, he wore white socks over his feet.
"My gran is a huge fan." Harry didn't care where that sentence came from "My whole family is King mad."
Elvis beamed with enthusiasm, he never gets tired with hearing what people thought of his career even when his legacy reigned for centuries later.
"Well, tell your Gran I'm a huge fan of her's."
Harry lowered his head for a second before raising his head "Unfortunely my gran passed away, but I bet she would've loved to hear that."
"I'm sorry to hear." Elvis gave a moment's silence before raising his head, he took in the sight of Lila who had remained silent as her friend soaked in being in the Elvis Presley's presence. "Your Lila, aren't you?"
"Yes, Sir."
Elvis turned his attention to his manager "Can you please give us a moment, Colonel."
Colonel Tom hadn't left the makeshift home away from home, he had stayed in the corner of the room keeping an eye on Lila and Harry, he turned his attention to his client "No."
"Please, Colonel. These two are old friends."
Colonel Tom pursed his lips for a moment "If there's one rhinestone out of place, God help you both." He slammed the door as he left the room.
It took a few seconds before anyone said anything.
"How do you know who I am?" Lila asked.
"Please sit." Elvis indicated to the two single leather chairs across from him.
Lila and Harry took a seat as Elvis adjusted his sitting position just slightly.
"I was the one who sent you the magazines." He spoke.
"You?" Lila was both shocked and confused "I..I thought it was Boss."
"Let me start from the beginning." Elvis blinked four times before beginning his explanation "Before you moved in, there was a family. A very loud family. We couldn't handle the sounds, so we began our ways of convincing them to leave."
"Explains the ghost stories." Lila noted.
Elvis awkwardly shrugged "Sorry about that, but you know us. We're quite sensitive to sound."
Lila nodded.
Harry tried to follow along; he was more in awe of Elvis while being confused that Elvis didn't have a big booming voice that Lila had describe the half-breeds having when they spoke.
"We enjoyed the silence until we saw you move in, we prepared ourselves to convince you to leave but you were very quiet. Instead we watched, just watched you in the house. We started to like you. I started to send you the magazines. We thought you'd get the hint but you full breeds are a silly bunch. Centuries later and we still don't understand." Elvis shook his head slightly before blinking four times.
The room went silent for a second.
"Boss wants me, don't they?" Elvis sighed.
Lila nodded.
"He said that he wanted you to come home." Harry filled in the sentence that Lila didn't speak.
Elvis looked at Harry "That outfit brings back some memories." He half-heartedly smiled.
"How much of your memories are his?" Harry curiously asked.
"All, From the day he was born to the day he..." Elvis trailed off "From all the woman to Priscilla to Ginger." He lowered his head for a second "Even Little Lisa Marie." He sighed.
"Can you make new memories?" Harry asked.
Elvis shook his head "When we're someone else, we retain their memories. We can't create new or adjust old. We just have to live what they know. Though Elvis, his mind..." He softly shook his head to tried the thoughts.
"Do you have your own Priscilla?" Harry hoped Elvis would say yes.
"I did, she was a beautiful woman. Very beautiful." He sighed.
"What about Ginger?"
"Harry." Lila tried to shush her friend.
"It's fine, Lila. Harry's just curious and it's fine." Elvis sounded like he was trying to convince himself rather than the other two.
The three of them turned their attention to the door as it pushed open.
"Colonel Tom, are you.." Harry moved his attention to Lila "What did you call them?"
Elvis lowered his head as he tried to hide his laughter.
Colonel Tom raised an eyebrow "At least all the rhinestones are still in place."
Lila studied Colonel Tom for a moment, she struggled to see who the green creature under the disguise might be.
"I would like to invite Elvis to my house." Lila spoke to Colonel Tom.
"No. Elvis doesn't do house calls; he doesn't leave this building."
Lila rose to her feet, Colonel Tom carefully watched her.
"Boss can't have Elvis." Colonel Tom stated before Lila had a chance to speak.
Harry watched Elvis, he sensed that Elvis knew something that no one else in the room knew.
"Boss should know that Elvis can't leave this building." Colonel Tom spoke again.
Lila looked at Elvis.
"Boss never told you?"
Lila looked at Colonel Tom.
"Why can't you leave?" Harry curiously wondered out loud as he looked at Elvis.
Elvis shrugged as he stayed silent.
"But you know there's a way that he can. It's the same way Matorica comes and goes, right?"
Colonel Tom pursed his lips together "Elvis stays."
Harry felt a spark of a thought fill his mind "We gave what we could, pushing back as much as we could." He looked at Colonel Tom "That's why Elvis' is still here. You won't let him leave."
Elvis watched as Colonel Tom tried to hide his lie with his appearance, Colonel Tom stayed silent.
Elvis stood to his feet "Is it day or night?"
Lila looked at Elvis "Day."
"Of course." Elvis sighed before blinking four times "After my performance tonight, I'll come to yours."
"No." Colonel Tom demanded his no be respected.
"With all due respect, RaL I don't have to listen to you. You have the appearance of Tom, but you certainly aren't him."
"RaL?" Lila hushed curiously as she studied Colonel Tom, she had heard the stories of RaL, the green creature who failed to be Boss and had been quickly demoted to the aid of a shapeshifting half breed.
RaL as Colonel Tom snarled his top lip "You know what he'll do, Lila."
Lila kept her opinion to herself.
Harry felt lost as he attempted to carry on listening.
"Do you want that happening to Gullsea?" RaL kept his Colonel Tom appearance as he picked at Lila's thoughts "Thought so. Elvis needs to stay at Memphis. His safe here."
Elvis exhaled his deep breath "RaL, I'll be fine. I'll give up being Elvis Presley."
"You two shouldn't of come here, I had every right to force you out but of course, Gullsea didn't have the heart." Colonel Tom shot his glance at Elvis.
Lila finally found her words "After Elvis' performance tonight, he'll come to mine. Your invited to RaL." She now understood why no one liked RaL.
