Chapter Fifteen
"Are you really eighteen?" Harry flopped back on her lounge.
The lounge room began to twinkle with soft lighting as it stayed still.
"It's complicated." Lila sat down next to Harry, "In Earth 0.26 years, I'm eighteen but I'm a half breed, so I don't age. We just kinda die." She absently mindly spoke the last sentence.
Harry shifted his gaze to her, the past few days have felt like a whirlwind to him as he learnt about half breeds, Elvis impersonators, Ruffles impersonator and the truth about his best friend.
"How does a half breed die?"
Lila shrugged "No one really knows." She sighed.
They both looked at the wall as the tv struggled to obtain the image that was trying to break through the screen, static noise flickered on the tv screen as touches of green tried to break through "I give up." The voice spoke "Lila, if you can hear this. I'm alive. I'm somewhere. Shit." The touches of green gave up trying to break through the tv screen.
The lights in the lounge room flicked off, the static noise in the tv started to break through around the lounge room, the tv screen soaked back into the wall.
Harry and Lila watched as the static noise danced around them, they could feel the shake of the lounge.
They watched as costumes in various styles and shapes piled around the lounge room, they watched as hair wigs propped up on stands, they watched as several sewing machines stitch together pieces that were caught under its needle point.
They watched as piles of makeup scattered over benches.
Lila carefully stepped up from her spot, the lounge started to shake a little heavier trying to encourage Harry off.
She inspected the holographic items around her lounge room as the static noise started to die down, she watched as the sewing machines stitched, she watched as the costumes on the floor were picked up than dropped down, she watched as mannequin stands appeared.
Lila watched as the static noise hovered in the corner of her lounge room, blocking something from her view.
"Alright, I get it." Harry jumped up, the lounge quickly sank into the floor, another chair didn't pop up.
He looked around the lounge room, finally paying attention to everything in the room.
"I don't know where this is." Lila hushed under her breath as she stared at the static noise blocking her view.
Harry jumped as he heard a door slam against the wall, he turned his attention to the lounge room entrance, but the front door hadn't opened "It's Boss' office"
Lila tore her eyes away from the static noise to look at Harry, he looked at her.
"There's only one person who slams their door."
Lila chewed down on her lower lip as she realised it was going to be impossible to get into Boss' office.
Harry ignored the holographic imagery as he walked out of the lounge room, he rushed up the hallway and into Lila's room.
The curtains in Lila's room zipped closed, the blanket pushed enough aside to show the pink sheet underneath.
Harry pulled open the wooden doors of her cupboard, he pushed aside her clothes. He ran his hands along the back wall.
"It's a quick triple knock." Lila's voice filled Harry's concertation.
Harry inhaled as he folded his fingers into a fist, he exhaled as he tried to triple knock on back wall.
Lila stood behind Harry as they waited.
Nothing happened.
Harry raised his fist again.
"If you do it again, they'll know something's wrong." Lila verbally stopped him.
Harry shifted his gaze up at Lila.
Lila carefully balanced herself next to Harry, she placed her hands on the back of the cupboard wall. "Maverick." She softly spoke.
Nothing.
"Maverick, I'm scared." She softly spoke.
Nothing.
"Maverick, I don't know what's happening to me." Lila whispered.
Harry shifted his gaze between Lila and the back wall, he stayed quiet.
Hand gestures on the back wall started to appear. I can't let you in, Are you safe?
"Maverick, I don't know." Lila softly whispered.
Nothing.
"I've never been stopped from coming through before." Lila whispered.
A new set of hand gestures appeared on the wall We have our rules, If I break them. You'll be safe, little one.
Lila removed her hands from the back wall, she sighed.
"Not helping, are they?" Harry didn't understand what the hands spelt out but understand Lila's defeat.
"Maverick can't." She dropped down to her knees.
"We need to go to Memphis."
Lila seemed confused as she looked up at Harry "There's nothing at Memphis."
"Ruffles said there was a door, right?"
Lila shook her head "That's gone, when Ruffles and those guards died, the door vanished as well. Memphis is just a church now."
Harry pursed his lips together as he tried to think of a plan "How far does the village stretch to?"
She watched as he started to come up with a plan.
