Chapter 6: He Loves Her
Rapunzel's POV
I ran my brush through my short brown hair, relieved that I wouldn't have to spend hours detangling it. It was a plus I got when Eugene cut it.
I stared at myself in the mirror. I looked so different now. Three years ago, if I saw myself now, I would definitely freak out. My hair, my clothes, my expression, even my posture, was different. I liked the new me.
I wondered about Elsa and my dream. Why was she crying? Why was she in a storm? And why did Jack Frost show it to me? I hadn't seen him since that night. I didn't stop believing in him, so he had to be someplace else. But where?
"What's wrong, Rapunzel?" Eugene asked as he got out of bed. He walked over to me and hugged me from behind, his breath on my neck. I smiled at his concern.
"I'm fine. Just, thinking," I reassured him. He smiled back, then gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.
"You need some rest. They're docking the ship in London tomorrow. Maybe then we'll find her," he said as he walked me to my side of the bed. I could stay up for hours if Eugene didn't make me.
"Yeah, you're right. Goodnight!" I agreed. I climbed into bed and tried to relax, but it felt like it was impossible. My mind kept running with thoughts. I wanted to turn them off for one second, but there was no off switch.
I laid awake for what seemed like hours. I watched Eugene as he fell asleep, his breathing slowed down. I tried reading reading a book, but I couldn't concentrate. I wanted to go to sleep so badly that I couldn't.
But then a little distraction knocked on my door. I looked over at Eugene to make sure he was still sleeping. Then I jumped off my bed and opened the door to find Melody standing there impatiently.
"Princess Rapunzel! This may sound a little crazy but-," she began. But a cold breeze cut her off. We both looked back into the cabin and saw that the small circular window was covered with ice. I walked over to it slowly, and Melody followed.
"This has happened before," I said to myself.
"I know," Melody responded. I looked back at her at her with wide eyes.
"What do you mean?" I asked her as I knelt down to her level.
"He comes to my window and talks about her, your sister. He said I could help find her if I came on this ship," she explained as ice crept on the wall. Will two taps coming from the window, snowflakes appeared in the room and the room was freezing cold. I hugged Melody for warmth.
More tapping came from the window. Finally I decided to open it, but it was frozen solid. Melody tried to help me pull it open, but it was no use.
"Lay back on the ice, Jack," I whispered to the window.
An image of a snowflake appeared on the window. It danced and spun around, if a snowflake could even do that. Then one half of the snowflake turned into a glowing sun. It spiraled out of control, evaporated away, then turned into a blue moon. It was a strange thing for Jack to show us, but I knew it meant something important.
I pulled the window open one last time, and it budged open, bringing in the cold air of the sea. Jack floated into the room and sat on the small table in the center with a sad look on his face.
"Jack, what's going on?" Melody asked him, rushing to his side. Jack fiddled with his staff, trying to ignore her question. "Jack? Please tell us."
He let out a big sigh, then began. "I can't tell you specifics; the moon told me not to," he vaguely explained, looking at the floor.
"What do you mean?" I asked. Melody and I were now sitting next to this emotional guardian. He looked like he had seen a ghost even though he was as white as one.
"That, was a vision your future. I can't say more," Jack said as he pointed to the window. He must've been referring to the snowflake. But his riddles weren't helping, so I decided to ignore his rambling.
"Why did you summon Melody here?" I asked impatiently. I needed real answers.
"Elsa's getting worse. Her coronation is coming soon and it's getting harder for her to control her powers." Jack's mind wandered for a moment before he continued. "Melody has a book in her library that help you find her."
"Why can't you just tell us where she is?" I asked. Jack's answers were unsatisfying.
Jack hesitated to speak. He seemed scared and worried, but he knew he had to tell us.
"It's very complicated, but if you insist. As you know, I'm trapped at the age of seventeen. Elsa is aging and I'm not. She can't remember me anymore. You two can because you are children at heart, but she can't believe I exist. The only way for her to see me is either I become human again or," Jack explained before chocking up. He couldn't continue.
We didn't want to push him over the line, so Melody asked him a question that she and I were both wondering.
"Why do want her to believe in you?" She asked gently. A smile crept onto Jack's face, the only one he showed all night.
"She's special to me. We have a connection that's inexplicable. I don't want to lose that."
Melody and I looked at each other knowingly. Jack had feelings for Elsa. He had been the person she would go to for comfort. They saw each other every day. They had a relationship. But it was gone after her foster parents died. Elsa couldn't believe in anything anymore. And it killed Jack that he couldn't help her anymore. Be with her. Hold her.
"We'll find that book. Don't worry Jack, we'll get her back. For both of us," I said to him.
Jack got up and looked at us with hope.
"I really hope you do. Before it's too late."
Jack pointed his staff behind us for us to look. Eugene was standing there, wondering who we were talking to.
"What's going on?" He asked with a smile.
"Jack's here," Melody said as she pointed to Jack. He waved embarrassingly even though he knew Eugene couldn't see him.
"Oh, hey Jackie! Don't make it too cold tonight," Eugene said sarcastically. But in that second, his eyes widened with disbelief. "What the-?"
"Gotta get going, Eugene Fitzherbert. You've really cleaned yourself up," Jack said before he escaped out the window. When the window shut closed, all the ice, snowflakes, and cold air disappeared. Jack was gone.
"Thanks for believing," Jack whispered in our ears.
