Chapter 6:

The Eavesdropper

Tony didn't mean to do it.

It was a complete accident, and he hadn't meant to stay either.

He just did.

While Tony was installing JARVIS to the old therapy room at SI, he allegedly came across something that was definitely interesting.

He found Annabeth having a therapy session.

Now, he normally wouldn't have stayed because in matters such as these— everyone deserves their own privacy but he had no choice considering the fact that if he left JARVIS half installed, then half of SI's systems will fry.

The starting of Annabeth's session was quite interesting in Tony's eyes, especially as she pointed a finger at the poor old doctor screaming that she wasn't crazy.

At that point in time, Annabeth had sat down on the chair and with a small voice assured the doctor that she normally didn't act like this. It broke the Merchant of Death's heart.

Oh, but the uninterrupted hour the Pierce woman spent in there was heartbreaking for many— Tony coming in such category.

"Can you describe your relationship with him for me?" was a question that had intrigued Tony but the thing with Annabeth was— you would just two questions for one answer.

When she confirmed the fact that she never doubted him, Tony could swear that this was clearly one of the things that still made her feel happy.

Tony understood.

As it went on, Tony gained a deeper glimpse into the years from 1999 to 2002 where Lumont Pierce cheated on his wife, where Andrea Carter had cancer, and where Annabeth thought she was hurting him.

You weren't, Tony wanted to scream but he could merely watch.

The entire room seemed to change though when Dr. Allen asked Annabeth about Peter.

Just as it was for Annabeth, Peter had repeatedly remained a hard topic for Tony to talk about.

Peter was, in Tony's eyes, all of his dreams come true— a home with Annabeth.

When Annabeth proclaimed Tony the news, he was ecstatic because who didn't dream of starting a family with the girl of their dreams?

But just like everything in Tony's life, that dream was destroyed the moment he entered the hospital to see a glum Obie. Obie had been the one to tell him and Tony had to be the one to tell Annabeth— their son was dead.

Peter had become that wall behind which Annabeth and Tony sheltered themselves. Peter was the dream and dreams didn't come true.

So, when Dr. Allen asked about Peter and Annabeth told him about her dreams, Tony was reminded of his own.

Peter was supposed to be Tony's son, but he never got a chance to hold his little boy.

With a start, Tony realized that he still wanted all of this.

He wanted Peter to be proud of him— wherever he was in that special heaven made for incredible babies.

Tony loved Annabeth.

He always had and it seemed like he always will.

She loved him too.

For all one knows, he could still get it all back.

Maybe not at once but slowly— maybe by first becoming her friend and then maybe in the possible future...

This time, Tony decided that there would be no heartbreak, no pain.

This time he would decide what happened in his future.

This time Annabeth wouldn't leave.
