21: Catching Up
India crashes into her bed late at night. It's been one week since school started and she's already exhausted. Maybe it's because of the new area, or the new schedule, or the studying upon studying. Or maybe it's because her heart is completely just drained.
One week and there has only been a total of twenty texts shared between India and Jesse. She has cried until her tear ducts have been drained. She's in the stage of feeling completely nothing now. There's too many emotions and thoughts running through her that she's just turned off from the world.
The only good thing in her days are Sadie and her boyfriend Bash. They go out to get coffee every now and then and even though Bash isn't much of a ray of sunshine, he's warmed up to India. She has begun to feel comfortable around him and even be excited to meet up with him and Sadie.
India lies in bed, staring up at the ceiling above her. Her roommate snores loudly in the bed next to her, as she does every night. She's part of the reason why India hasn't gotten a good nights sleep in a week. Her roommate is nice but hardly ever speaks. Or at all actually. India tries to provoke a conversation with her from time to time but her roommate only offers a weird glance. India is pretty sure she doesn't know English or chooses not to speak it. She's walked in on a group of girls in her dorm, and once they saw India they spoke to each other in Hindi and left with stares pointed at India.
Her phone buzzes on the nightstand next to her, but she's too exhausted to grab for it. It's probably Kasper asking for the notes in class, seeing as how he asks her every day. She doesn't like her British Literature class as much as she thought she would. In face she doesn't like any of her classes. They're either boring or just too much work. Thinking about even walking into class tomorrow gives her an unsettling amount of anxiety.
Her phone buzzes again, which makes India finally work up the strength to look at it. Maybe it's something important. Maybe it's Sadie. Or maybe, just maybe it's Jesse. Her heart skips a beat, waiting in anticipation to see if he's finally texted her. She holds the phone away from her and takes a breath. She needs to calm down. She knows she can't be so dependent on one person who clearly doesn't show the same feelings for her.
She looks at the screen and her heart skips a beat but instantly picks up. It's not Jesse, it's Keenan. She hasn't spoken to him in so long. What could be important enough for him to suddenly talk to her.
'I'm sorry it took so long to get your stuff, but my dad shipped it out yesterday.'
'It should all be there tomorrow or the next day.'
India looked at her phone confused. He must have texted the wrong person.
'Wrong person,' she types back. Her phone buzzes again immediately.
'India?'
'Yes it's me,' she texts. 'What are you talking about?'
She watches as the little read receipt shows up on the screen, but no texting bubble follows. She stares at the screen for a couple minutes, waiting for Keenan to text back. Finally he does.
'Sorry, apparently you didn't know'
'Didn't know what?!? I'm so confused'
The texting bubble pops up and doesn't go away for quite some time. So many things are rushing through India's mind and not all of them are making sense given her exhaustion. Her phone buzzes again in her hand as her eyes begin to close.
'Jesse asked me to grab your stuff and get it shipped to you in New York last week. He told me you were there, but I forgot cause I got busy with something you wouldn't believe and when I told my dad to finally grab the stuff your dad wouldn't let him in the house, so it took a while.'
"Oh my god," India whispers, sitting up straight on her bed. India was prepared to just buy everything new and start over. She would rather spend a bunch of money on new things than communicate with her Dad, but Jesse was one step ahead of her. Maybe he did care.
Sadie was a good enough person to lend her some of her old dorm things, like her blankets and even some of her clothes. She was getting tired of it though and was excited to have some of her stuff back.
She texted Keenan back with 'thank you. I appreciate it.'
She just hoped that Jesse didn't tell Keenan about her Dad, but she doubted that he did. He knew the boundaries she had set up, especially with Keenan. That trust went away though when Keenan sent another text.
'I'm sorry about your dad... you can always talk to me' A smiling face and heart emoji put at the end of the text did nothing for the anger India felt. How could he? How could Jesse tell Keenan such a private and important thing about her life?
"Oh no," she whispered to herself, feeling her insides coil. Keenan's Dad clearly knows as well, otherwise he wouldn't have grabbed India's things. Who else knows? The whole town? With the way people talked in Greenfield that was the most probable outcome. The whole town were spreading lies and gossip about her family now. Her father might have hit her, but she didn't want the whole world to know that. That was between her and her father... and Jesse. And now the whole town of Greenfield.
Angrily, with a fire burning inside of her, India goes to Jesse's contact and presses the phone icon button.
Only one ring passes before the other end is picked up.
"India," he asks, sounding relieved and happy.
"What the fuck," she screams into the phone.
...
Jesse freezes, his heart stopping as India yells into the phone. She's never sounded so angry before. His older brother looks at him curiously from the other side of the couch, but Jesse pays him no mind. All he can hear is India's voice echoing in his ear.
"What's wrong," Jesse asks, confused beyond belief.
"You stabbed me in the back," she screams. "You told Keenan about my Dad! How could you fucking do that to me!"
"What," Jesse asks. "I never told Keenan anything!"
She laughs dryly, giving Jesse a sickening feeling in his stomach. "Bullshit Jesse. With how often you lie now you're gonna have to start getting better at it."
"India," Jesse growls, feeling his blood boil. "I promise you that I didn't tell Keenan about your Dad!" Justin turns down the volume from the TV as Bud creeps into the room, wanting to hear what the yelling is about. Bud and Justin share confused looks as Jesse shoots up from the couch and begins to pace around the small apartment.
"Then how the hell did he know I was in New York and to ship me my things?"
Jesse stops walking and sighs heavily. Pinching his nose, he explains, "yes, I asked him to ship you the things you needed, but India . . ."
"What Jesse? What else did you tell him? Because he seemed awfully sorry for me. What happened with my Dad and I is none of any ones business!" A small voice is heard on the other end of the call, but Jesse can't make it out. It just sounds angry. "I get it, I get it! I might not speak your language but I know when you curse at me," India says, but Jesse knows it's not directed at him. He hears a door slam before India starts yelling again. "Thanks to you the whole town is gonna find out and his name will be ruined! Because of you!"
"India," Jesse seethes. "Do not blame this on me! I didn't tell Keenan shit!"
"Then how the fuck does he know," she yells, with so much anger it scares Jesse.
Jesse takes a deep breath, trying to calm down. "Let me come see you. I'll tell you then." He tries his best to keep his voice soft.
"No," she draws out. "You're gonna tell me right now."
Jesse rubs his forehead and begins to pace again. He needs to see her. "Send me your location."
"Jesse just fucking answer me," she screams.
"Not until you give me your location!"
India groans loudly on the other end, clearly frustrated. 'That's fine' Jesse thinks. He just needs to know where she is.
"There," India spits a minute later as Jesse's phone buzzes with her location and dorm number. She's always giving more than asked. "I sent it. Now tell me or I'm going to kill you."
Jesse rolls his eyes in effect of her words. She can be so dramatic when she's upset. A part of him begins to be attracted this part of her. It's like the flame that's been flickering within her for so long has finally grown. She's his hot burning Sun.
"After you left your father got a DUI. The word spread around. That's all I know." Jesse waits for a response. Anything, but nothing comes.
The call ends.
...
It takes Jesse thirty seven minutes, using the subway to get to India's dorm. As he runs up the multitude of staircases he thanks himself for demanding her location, but he curses that all the maintenance men in NYC can't fix an elevator.
He's out of breath when he gets to her floor but his lungs stop working all together when he sees her at the end of the short hall. In the arms of another man.
