20: Adolescent Feelings
I'm so sorry that it's been so long. I work two jobs and go to school and still try to have a social life. I love writing though and it makes me so happy, especially during a hard time I'm going through right now. I was planning on stocking up on chapters and releasing them all when I finished the book but you guys have all waiting for so long for me to update so here's a chapter. I hope you guys don't hate me and will still follow the story of Keenan, Aurora, Jesse, and India.
Here's a recap if you need it:
India found old letters sent from her Mom to her that her father hid from her. She ran away from her father after he had found her reading them and hit her. She went to New York two weeks early were Jesse already was with his brother Justin. She has not spoke to her dad or anyone from Greenfield. Jesse and India got into a fight because Jesse hasn't said he loves her, and Jesse went out to bars without India and with a girl that has been flirting with him (thanks to his brother Justin who meant to leave india behind at home) They've decided to distance themselves as india began school and Jesse worked on music for a record deal. She met a new friend, Sadie (from my other book This Love) and her boyfriend bash.
Aurora found out her parents are divorced and ran away to southern Cali where Keenan found her on a beach, He offered her his dorm and she is now staying there. He's a third string quarter back for the USC football team (better than most, Conrad is second string Full Back but is now first string after an incident with the first string) Keenan defended Conrad who is his gay roommate from other guys on the team and got suspended from a couple games.
CHAPTER 20
The living room was a complete mess. Beer bottles strewn on the ground, paper towels still damp on the floor where they tried to clean up a spilled bottle, and the smell of vomit was still potent in the air.
Keenan felt terrible for Aurora. Just like it had been during the camping trip, Aurora was no match for Keenan. She couldn't keep up with him like she thought. If she had her memories, she would know that.
Instead, she had began to whine and whimper after she had drank half of the remaining bottle, plus two glasses of wine. Keenan led her to the bathroom, knowing what was to come next, but as always she was stubborn. She refused to go with him, trying to drink more and win the bet, until it was too late. Her vomit found it's way to the plastic plant next to the couch.
Keenan was kind of grateful, he didn't like that thing in his dorm, but like all of the decorations, his mom bought it for him with no chance of arguing.
The plant was now with the rest of the building's trash, but the smell stuck around. Still groggy from waking up, and feeling the affects of a small hangover, Keenan pushed himself off the couch where he slept. After Aurora had fell asleep by the toilet, Keenan carried her to his bed. He wasn't going to make her sleep on the hard tile all night.
He propped open the window, feeling the hot California air hit him in the face. As uncomfortable as it was, he had to get the smell out of his dorm.
He sighed once he looked around at the damage. Aurora shouldn't have to clean this all up, especially when she's not feeling well with a strong hangover.
Thus, Keenan began his two hour long clean up of the dormotory bathroom and living room.
Conrad walked in as Keenan was beginning to wash all the dishes by hand. He looked bright and ready to go, a smile on his face.
"I figured you would be hungover and stay in?"
Conrad swiped an apple off the counter, quickly taking a bite. With a mouth full of food, he spoke. "I didn't drink much last night, niether did you. But now that I'm starting on varsity, I have to keep my grades and attendance up." Conrad coughed, nearly choking on his breakfast. "Are you heading to class man?" He asked once he controlled himself.
"I'm gonna skip today. I don't want to leave Aurora here alone." The truth was that Keenan wanted to be with Aurora alone. He's missed a lot of time with her. Well, he missed all the time with her. She didn't remember a single thing about him, not even his face when she woke up in the hospital.
Conrad leaned against the counter between them, a smirk replacing his grin. "When I first saw you I thought you were a ladies man. Then when I agreed to move in here, I thought there would be sorority girls coming in and out all the time. Aurora is not a sorority girl. She's . . ."
"Different," Keenan finished for him, trying not to smile. "I know. That's the point."
Conrad leaned in closer, as much as he could. His smirk had faded and there was a serious look replacing it. "I saw the way you look at her. Not everybody receives those kinds of stares, the good ones."
"You have?" Keenan wondered what that was like, to be on the other end of the lovey dovey eyes.
"I have received and given it," Conrad answered, standing straight. "But they never end well. All eyes have to close."
Keenan watched as Conrad walked out the door. His words resonated in his mind. What did he mean?
Eventually, Aurora woke up and walked into the kitchen similar to a zombie. Her curly hair was stuck to her face with sweat, her feet weren't leaving the surface of the ground, and an inhuman groan escaped her lips.
"Last night," she murmured, keeping her eyes clenched tight. She kept her arms out in front of her, so she wouldn't run into anything. "Why didn't you just kill me?"
Keenan chuckled and put away the last of the clean dishes. "Because murder is a crime?"
"It's okay. I would have allowed it."
Keenan leans against the counter facing Aurora. "How about we go out and get something to eat? I could show you the area."
A smile lit up Aurora's face. "That sounds great!" She jumped up from the stool, running to the bathroom. Keenan couldn't keep his eyes off of her. When she disappeared into the bathroom he felt a rush of disappointment.
He groaned and buried his face in his hands. 'What is wrong with me' he thinks to himself. He knew at that moment that he can't be too obsessed with her or she'll run away.
Keenan locked himself in his bedroom as he tried to clear his head. All he could think about though was Aurora. Her hair, her eyes, her smile, her voice. He never thought he could see any of those things again. It was as if she had died and been revived just for him. This was his second chance to get the girl of his dreams. He ruined it the first time but he wouldn't this time. He was going to make Aurora fall in love with the new Keenan.
He wanted to be the guy he was after the camping trip. The guy that ran down the street to a gas station for a pack of gummy bears for her ice cream. Or the guy that took her ice skating in the only ice skating rink for miles.
It was ironic how last year Keenan was obsessed with winning. That's why he tried so hard to get Aurora to sleep with him, even when she had a boyfriend. He just wanted to win. And now . . . he doesn't care about winning. He only cares about getting Aurora.
He leaves his room in a new outfit and finds Aurora sitting on the living room couch in fresh clothes. "How many clothes did you bring," he asks curiously. She only has one backpack so she couldn't have brought that much.
She shrugs, looking embarrassed. "Not a lot but it's okay."
"Any shorts," he asks, looking at her skinny jeans. She must be burning up in those. Aurora shakes her head.
"We can go to the mall first," he offers.
...
Aurora switched her weight from one foot to the other as her eyes nervously trailed amongst the college girls around the store. The three girls at the counter in front of her had sun kissed skin and beautiful long blonde hair. Their legs looked like they went on for days and from what Aurora could see they have boobs spilling out of their cut up shirts. Every girl around Aurora's age managed to look similar. Tan skin, blonde hair, and bodies that came out of a playboy magazine.
The girls left the counter laughing and smiling, their eyes landing on Keenan for a long second before running out of the store with multiple bags in hand. Aurora hesitantly placed her small stack of cheap clothes on the counter. The cashier gave her a bright fake smile as she began to ring up the items. The young woman didn't try to hide her stares towards Keenan.
"And your total will be $56.34. Is your brother paying for you," the cashier asked as Aurora fumbled in her wallet for the little cash she had.
"Not her brother," Keenan clarified, "and yes I will. Can you add these too?"
Aurora looked shocked at the handful of underwear that Keenan placed on the counter. Her cheeks went bright red as Keenan inserted his credit card into the card reader.
"Keenan," she hissed, hitting his shoulder. Her eyes darted around the store, seeing if anyone noticed the mountain of lace underwear in front of her.
"Don't worry about the money Aurora. It's not even mine. It's my parents."
"That's not," she whispered harshly, before stopping suddenly. The cashier was giving her a harsh glare. Aurora hid behind Keenan as the cashier finished the transaction and handed Keenan the bag of clothes regrettably.
Keenan followed Aurora out of store but it was hard since Aurora was basically running. He jogged to catch up to her, grabbing her elbow as she turned a corner. "Hey what's wrong?"
She rolled eyes and crossed her arms, yanking herself from his hold. "Why did you do that?"
Keenan groaned and then turned it into a small laugh. "I don't mind paying for you okay? I want too, please."
She was thankful that he paid. It was a tremendously nice thing for him to do and like he said, it wasn't his money anyways. She had barely any of her own. But it wasn't that.
"The underwear," she whispered while feeling a heat rise to her cheeks.
"I can't hear you," Keenan responded, leaning closer to her.
She could feel his cool breath on her face. She hasn't been this close to a guy before that she's been attracted to. At least not that she can remember. She remembers being boy crazy when she was fifteen, but this feeling was different. It was stronger, hotter, like a fire burning in her body.
"Oh." Keenan leaned back as an understanding look crossed his face. "I'm sorry," he said sincerely. "I just saw you looking at them earlier and thought you wanted them but couldn't afford them. Here." He handed her the bag of clothes. "You should go put on some shorts cause it's crazy hot out."
Aurora snatched the bag from Keenan's hand and ran off to the nearest bathroom. She was happy to be away from him, but she was so confused as to why she liked being so near to him as well.
Keenan watched her disappear down a hallway that lead to the restrooms. He mentally cursed himself. He forgot that the age she remembers being was fifteen. It wasn't exactly a confident age for everyone. Although she's eighteen now, her mind is still getting used to it. She must only remember buying packages of underwear from Walmart with her Mom.
Keenan realized that he needed to respect that mental age difference between Aurora and him. He wasn't sure what was going through her mind because she hadn't even told this stranger she had met her story. But he could only assume that she wasn't ready to be eighteen yet.
Aurora came back to Keenans side a couple minutes later. Out of all the girls walking around him that were staring at him, his eyes were only on Aurora. She was wearing a tank top and cotton like shorts with sneakers. It was nothing fancy or revealing or sexy, but to him she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen.
After discovering what love was and what girls were too at a young age, Keenan was always confused how people could say they were only attracted to one person. But now when he looked at Aurora he understood. It meant love.
