17: First Day of College
The rain didn't let up for three days. It stayed gloomy outside, just like India's mood.
She missed him, so much. She missed hearing his voice, seeing his smile, feeling his hand in hers. Every night in her dormitory she cried herself to sleep, wishing he was there with her.
Other than a couple short texts through out the day, India and Jesse didn't speak. All she knew was that he was working on his songs, with Sierra. That gave her all the reason to put as much effort into speaking to him as he was to her, which wasn't a lot.
The only person to give her company was Kasper, who would drop by her room once a day and invite her out with his new friends. She accepted once and instantly regretted it. His friends were exactly like the ones back home, innapropriate and jocks. They hit on her all night, making her uncomfortable to the point that Kasper walked her ten blocks back to the campus.
One of his friends though reminded her of Keenan. Being around him, hurt her enough. She wondered what her old lab partner was up to these days. She knew the accident that took Aurora away from him really impacted him. It impacted India too. Sometimes she'll catch herself thinking of that night, of the accident that left her friend with no memory.
Jesse always managed to help India not think about it too much, but without his presence, it kept ruining her mind. Ultimatley, she felt guilty for walking away with only a broken arm, while Aurora lost the past couple years of her life.
She wasn't very close with Aurora, but that night she felt closer to her than anyone else, other than Jesse. She felt as though Aurora was the only other person who understood her. Then, in one quick moment, she lost that.
She wanted to find someone else who could be that person, someone who wasn't Jesse. Someone she could vent to about Jesse. Kasper didn't like hearing about him, he felt more as though he shouldn't hear about him. Kasper was smart, he knew exactly where the line was drawn between them and knew he shouldn't cross it.
Her friend Luna was never a good choice. Sure, they were friends, but they were so different. She could only imagine what Luna would tell her.
'Dump him! You can do so much better! Go out! Meet a stranger and spread your legs for him! You only get over a guy by getting under another one!'
So India had to search else where for someone who could listen and throw in some advice here and there. Good advice. She had an idea of who it could be.
India sat in her first class of the day, of the year, of college: British Literature. The only thing that kept her calm about this day, was that she would have a familier face with her. The girl who handed her her schedule on Friday. Her name was Sadie she believed, and India thought she was going to save her seat. Except, Sadie hadn't arrived yet, and with the class almost starting India was afraid that her class got switched.
Kasper was in this class with her, but as soon as he saw the group of foriegn models in the back, he had completley forgotten about India.
India nervously arranged her notebook, pencil, and pen on the desk in front of her. She noticed a couple girls walk by and giggle behind their palms, their eyes zeroed in on her desk. India's confidence dropped a couple pegs, and her nerves rose to dangerous heights.
She wished Jesse was here with her. He would know how to calm her down.
'Oh screw it,' she thought to herself. She reached down to her bag by her feet and pulled out her phone. A part of her wished he had already sent her a text. Maybe one along the lines of 'Good luck. Love you.' Hell, she would be okay with one saying 'hi'.
Her heart sank when her screen lit up to show no notifications.
Nothing.
Why did she even bother? She dumped her phone back into her bag and sank back into her chair. She didn't need him, if he didn't want to be there for her. This was her life, her future. She could find her own way through it.
"There you are," exclaimed a cheery voice.
India looked up to see Sadie sliding into the chair beside hers. India sat up straight and wiped the frown from her face, replacing it with a small smile. She came! India's nerves settled instantly.
"Hi," India said softly, trying to contain her excitement. "I didn't think you were going to show up."
Sadie laughed with a twinkle in her eye. "Yeah, sorry about that. My boyfriend flew in last night to surprise me. He wouldn't really let me go to sleep, or you know, get out of bed this morning."
India turned her head slightly away, staring back at the front of the lecture room. She was jealous of Sadie, because that's what was supposed to happen to her. If only Jesse cared enough.
"Why aren't you with your boyfriend," Sadie asked, surprising India. She was looking over her shoulder to the back of the room. It took a second for India to realize she was looking at Kasper who was obviously hitting on a red haired beauty. He was making her laugh with no doubt so obnoxious joke.
"Oh," Sadie whispered, looking back at India with a pityful look. "I'm sorry. Guys are jerks. Just ignore him. We could go get coffee after this class and vent?"
India grinned, feeling ten times better than five minutes ago. Sadie was the exact friend she needed.
"You're right, that sounds great! Except that flirt is not my boyfriend, never was. My boyfriend is some where in the city, probably singing love songs to a half naked girl."
Sadie's face dropped in sympathy. "I could ask my boyfriend to kill him. He's a marine, he knows how to. And don't tell anyone this, but he likes hurting guys." India's new friend chuckled, easing her nerves even more. She barely remembered this was her first day of college, until the proffessor came in and yelled at everyone to shut up.
India and Sadie shot right up in their seats, their wide eyes glued to the professor marching into the room, his round rimmed glasses on the tip of his nose and his white hair reaching his shoulders.
"In this class be prepared to read some of the greatest, and yet most boring books of all time," he announced to the class. He didn't tell them his name, although they should all know that from their schedules. Instead, he climbed onto the old age ridden desk, and pulled out a water worn leather book from his teathered jacket.
He flipped through a couple pages, and began reading. India was confused as to what exactly he was reading, since there was no title on the cover that she could see and he never announced it.
India looked sideways to Sadie, to see her completley compelled by this man who seemed to be obsessed with everything from the 1800's. India smiled and copied her new friend.
Maybe this day wasn't going to be too bad.
