14: Remembering Part 1
It hurt.
He was hurting, beyond words.
He wanted to pry open his chest and tear out his heart right then, anything to not feel this.
But, it was amazing.
It was a miracle.
This was the greatest he's felt in four months.
And the worse.
Her hair. Her scent. Her walk. Her voice. It was all the same, but all different.
His palms were sweating an entire river as he stood in line to order, with the girl he loved beside him. The girl who forgot who he was.
Keenan's head was aching with confusion. How did she not remember him from the hospital? He was in the room with her when she woke up.
How could she have forgotten him twice?
What was she doing in California?
Did God hate him? Was he being punished? Or rewarded?
"So what's good here," Aurora asked, gaining Keenan's full attention.
He squinted at the menu behind the cashier, trying to find something she would like. He never found out much about her likes and dislikes, so he had to guess. He was afraid he wouldn't do a good job though.
"You have no idea do you," she teased, jabbing his stomach with her elbow.
He gulped, nervously saying, "I don't want to give you something you wouldn't like."
"I have an idea," she exclaimed excitedly. "My friend Max and I used to do this all the time when this happened. He would order his favorite meal for me, and I would order mine for him. If we didn't like it, we would switch."
Keenan hardly heard what she said after, 'my friend Max'.
Friend.
Not boyfriends.
With a curious look of hers pointed at him, he absentmindly nodded his head. She smiled in satisfaction, stepping up to the cashier to order.
Keenan didn't know what he just agreed to, his mind was fully occupied by the epitmome that was her.
He snapped back to reality as her hand rested on his shoulder. He looked up from the tiled floor to see her looking at him patiently, waiting for him to do something.
"Come on, order for me," she said with a heart shattering smile.
That.
That was something he would never forget.
He stepped up the cash register and ordered the first thing he saw. He didn't know what it was, he hardly knew how to pronounce it, he only hoped that Aurora would like it.
