Chapter 43: F/N
Y/N's POV
"Remind me why we're doing this?" Y/N carved out a few Fire Nation designs in the rock platforms Toph created, looking around at the torches placed along the walls of the cavern.
"Aang wants to throw a dance party for the kids at his school, just let him have a little fun." Sokka muttered. Y/N sighed.
"I guess that means I'm hiding in the back cave with Appa, then?" She asked, watching as the flying bison walked into the cavern, disappearing in the darkness.
"Actually, no." Aang jogged up to them. "These are just a bunch of Fire Nation kids, and they don't know we're the Avatar group." He held up a pretty outfit similar to Katara's. "I figured you'd like to be out of 'character' you could say for a bit, and convinced Katara that it was alright. You can be Y/N for one more night, then after that we'll start calling you F/N, we'll be moving further into Fire Nation territory."
Y/N took the outfit, holding it up and studying the quality work, seam designs, and dark red color. She smiled down at him.
"Thanks, Aang. It means a lot."

Even given the chance to, Y/N didn't feel like dancing. After everyone got going, and people started dancing together, a few guys came up to her, and Y/N regretted not staying in the cave with Appa. Each ask was incredibly awkward, and most of the guys were about 12 or 13, which wasn't really a huge age gap, but it felt really uncomfortable.
Y/N missed the parties on the old ship. She missed Zaji's amazing dancing, Amo's jokes and delicious punch, Kai's natural talent for the drums. She leaned against the wall, imagining she was still there, spinning across the metal floor, tipping to let Zaji catch her, only to spin her around again.
Then she imagined spinning right into the arms of another. Her breath caught in her chest as she remembered Zuko's face. Her face must have gone white, because Sokka tugged on her arm, asking if she was alright.
"Yea, yeah." She reassured him, patting his shoulder. Toph frowned at the ground.
"You're really tense. Are you sure? I can't actually tell if you're lying or not." She admitted, looking up at her with milky eyes, staring blankly at sharp, bright white.
"That's because I'm not even sure if I am."

"This place is awful." Y/N mumbled, staring forlornly at the poor river village around them, starving and ill from the polluted water.
"Stop staring at the huts and lets move, F/N. Don't give me that look." Sokka backed up when Y/N glanced at him angrily. "Geez, I hope your eyes fix themselves soon, they're really intimidating."
"Maybe I'd like to keep them, then." She shot back quietly. Y/N wasn't supposed to say much, but more just be an intimidating presence, which was easy enough, but Sokka was making it harder.
They kept walking, and bought some fish off Xu, a guy that either had split personality disorder, or just liked being crazy. Y/N stood quietly as her siblings bought the gross food, trying not to stare around at the terrible state of the village.
"Excuse me, miss?" Y/N turned around at a little tug on her pant leg. A small girl stood there, holding an empty water jar. "I really like your eyes." She complimented shyly. "Big brother said not to talk to strangers, but I wanted to show him your not scary."
"Oh, really?" Y/N crouched, getting on the girl's eye level. "I'm sure big brother is just trying to look out for you, there are some scary people out there."
"I wanted to show him that F/N L/N is on our side, and she's gonna help win the war for us." The girl whispered quietly with a smile. "That's you, right?" Y/N was taken aback for a moment. The word had spread this far already? To a tiny village on the river?
"I guess you already know me, then." Y/N chuckled quietly. "Yes, I am F/N. What is your name?" The little girl glanced back, fidgeting before speaking. There was a boy, maybe 13, standing off a good distance, looking worriedly in their direction, but he didn't move to approach.
"Y/N." The girl replied. Y/N's heart jumped for a moment, thinking she had been figured out, but then she realized the girl was just stating her own name. "Promise you and the Avatar will defeat the bad guys?"
"Of course, Y/N." Y/N smiled at her, discreetly waterbending some clean water into the girl's empty jar. Y/N stared at her in amazement, and she held a finger to her lips, winking at her and gesturing for her to go back to her brother.
Was the Avatar not the only sign of hope? F/N L/N seemed to be reviving people as well, something she didn't notice normal old Y/N doing.
"What are you doing, F/N? Come on, let's go." Sokka prompted.
"I think I like being F/N, Sokka." She whispered as she whisked by, her smile hidden by the black mask.

Appa got sick, so they had to stay a few more days. Y/N was more than elated to find out the town's spirit had been coming to help them, especially because it was obviously Katara.
"You always had a heart for those in need, haven't you?" Y/N asked, chuckling to herself. Sokka, however, was livid.
"You've made it so much worse, Katara! Now the Fire Nation soldiers are going to wipe out the lot of them for something you did."
"They aren't going to be wiped out, Sokka, we won't let them. Come on, let's mop the docks with their faces, F/N has a reputation to uphold." Y/N fixed a few of her knives to her sides. She hadn't fought anything for awhile now, and she's would be lying if she said she hadn't missed it.
"...maybe as a last resort. There are a lot of them, we should try the Painted Lady ploy to try just scaring them off first." Aang suggested, and Y/N agreed, watching as Katara carefully painted the markings on her face.

It was a lot more fun than Y/N thought it would be. She, Sokka, Toph, and Appa all got to make scary noises, and Y/N helped with the fog effects. Katara slowly approached the firebenders threateningly, and most of them looked like they would pee themselves, quickly leaving.
The screaming only came when Y/N stepped out of her hut, holding knives.
There were only 10 that were left, but she ran forward, quickly throwing knives into 3 of their necks, killing them nearly instantly. The other 7 screamed something about 'assassin' and tried to run, and she killed a few more as they hopped on their rides to retreat to the broken factory. She left the rest to tell the tale.
"That was horrifying." Sokka commented. "You came out of nowhere."
Y/N looked over at him, the creepy smile evident in her eyes, even if he couldn't see anything else.
"Being F/N is so much better than being Y/N. Y/N is broken. For now, I'm leaving her behind."
