Chapter 41: Broken
F/N & FL/N= Fake Name & Fake Last Name —— (tell me what your undercover name is :) )
"Stop this, I have a proposition!..."
"Save it for someone who cares..."
"This is none of your concern. Let her go..."
"Oh? Why so agitated? You seem to care about the well-being of this waterbender..."
"Stay quiet. Promise me you won't let him take you..."
"I love you, Zuko. I love you. Remember that."
"I will..."
"Y/N, my beautiful lotus flower..."
"You know I love you, Y/N."
"Y/N!"
Y/N!
"Y/N!" Katara yelled, and Y/N sat bolt upright, promptly hitting her head on something hard.
"Argh!" She fell back, clutching her forehead. "Ow..." Upon opening her eyes, she realized what she had hit. Sokka, clad in full Fire Nation armor, was doubled over on the floor, also clutching his head. "Don't hover over me so closely if your waking me up!" Y/N complained. "I've hit my head enough without your big face being a factor!"
"Y/N!" Katara cried, throwing her arms around her sister.
"That's the thing." Sokka yelled, getting up. "You weren't waking up." He knelt by her bed, smiling despite the red mark on his forehead. "It's good to have you back."
"Back? I-" Y/N's eyes widened as she remembered. "Oh... what... how...?"
"I had to split the spirit water between you and Aang, it was barely enough to bring you guys back." Katara explained. Y/N shuffled so she could lean against the wall, getting her bearings.
It was a Fire Nation ship. The tapestries and metal gave it away instantly, and judging by the way Sokka was dressed, it was their cover. Still, it felt so familiar to her. The warm, flickering light reflected off the metal walls, creating a cozy feel. She used to think it felt like a prison, but now it just felt more like home than anything, other than the Southern Tribe itself.
"How? How did you save me?" Y/N felt tears form in her eyes. She lifted her shirt a little, only to almost throw up. There was a horrible, blistered burn wound, and a healing scab where the fiery weapon had gone clear through her body. She pulled the fabric of her shirt down again.
"That's the thing. I didn't get there in time." Katara said quietly. Y/N looked over at her, confused.
"But... but that means..."
"You died that day, Y/N." Sokka finished for her, crossing his arms. "I don't know how the magic water brought you back, but it did, Aang too. Both of you were gone. I'm not going to question it, though, we're glad you guys are alive."
Sokka pulled her into a hug, and she returned it. She had died. Actually died. By Zuko's hand.
"Y/N..." Katara murmured as Sokka exited the room, called by a soldier above. Y/N looked over at her sister, wiping the tears from her eyes quickly.
"...I...." for once words seemed to be failing her. "I saw him- in a new light. For a short period of time." She grabbed Y/N's hand, and they both held on tightly.
"I could never understand fully, but... I think I see now... what you saw in him. He's just... broken. Shattered, even." Katara sighed. "But now, I guess you finally see him how I do, don't you?" She smiled over at Y/N, but her expression dropped when she saw her shaking her head.
"Of course I don't." Y/N rubbed her eyes in frustration. "Katara, it isn't that simple."
"I think DEATH is pretty simple!" Katara yelled. "He tried to kill- no- he DID kill you. Do you have any idea what that was like? Watching your body go limp as he held you, screaming at your corpse 'don't go'? He's insane! How could-"
"Tell me." Y/N commanded, cutting her off. "If Aang, one of your closest friends, killed you, would you forgive him?"
"What? Aang wouldn't just do that." Katara said defensively, taken aback.
"What if he was in the Avatar state?" Y/N pressed, and Katara thought for a moment.
"Well, yes, I would. That's different. He has no control of it right now, it wouldn't be his fault. It wouldn't actually be him."
"Then you understand exactly how I feel."

"Where'd Aang go?" Y/N grunted as she set down a large box of supplies. They'd had a run in with another Fire Nation ship, and were quickly discovered to be the enemy. They had escaped thanks to a sea serpent, and now were docked at a small port.
"Don't know. He got pretty angry earlier, and snapped at me. I decided to leave him alone for awhile." Katara worried. "Stop pushing yourself. You only woke up yesterday. You're still recovering."
"Might wanna find him. A storm is coming, and if he's flying around, we're gonna have ourselves something more than a fake-dead Avatar."
"Y/N! Don't joke around about that." Katara scolded.
"I can joke about it because I'm dead too, and be quiet. Remember? I'm not Y/N anymore." Y/N pointed at her outfit. She rather liked it, actually. She looked like some kind of assassin.
She wore all black, with various buckles and straps holding the pieces together and holding it close to her body, with a short cloak that hid her containers. The cloth went under, and connected with the metal, making the shiny metal completely invisible no matter how she moved. It was still very usable, though.
A portion of cloth covered her nose, connected to the piece that held all her hair under thick cloth. A hood covered both, and any possibly recognizable facial features left uncovered were wrapped in white bandages. She felt like a ninja, if ninjas were dead to the world.
They had discussed it, and decided it better if both Aang and Y/N stayed "dead". Aang would be revealed at the invasion, and Y/N after the war, when Azula or any Fire Nation soldiers that recognized her couldn't hurt her under new rule.
That meant, until further notice, or the war ended, Y/N was dead. Gone.
She was F/N FL/N now.
The group had been trying to practice referring to her as such, completing her identity. If an enemy saw her waterbend, they would be immediately terminated. She had a store of real throwing knives to use first, before resorting to her icicles if she needed to.
Sokka even made a strange small box, sewn to the back of her throat that made her voice deeper, just enough to make it unrecognizable. They could take it out to clean and make sure she wouldn't have throat problems from the metal object in her throat.
F/N was a trained warrior traveling with them, paid to protect the Avatar. She was being paid for it, and also had a motivation from the Fire Nation slaughtering her family. She wore all black, and never showed her face. Her only recognizable physical trait was her cold, white eyes.
Y/N had nearly screamed when she first saw them in the mirror, and Katara quickly explained that her eyes had changed when she used the spirit water on her. Y/N recovered quickly, but still, it was strange, looking at her reflection now. Instead of looking at the E/C eyes she was used to, striking white stared back. They looked like fractured ice.
"Will they change back? They look so... empty. Broken." She had asked in front of the mirror, looking closely at the beautiful but cold white.
"Don't know. Hopefully they won't until this is all over. I don't know how we would cover the E/C." Katara had answered, shrugging and leaving the room.
Still, it covered up the only visible part of her that could give her away. It made her F/N.
If the invasion didn't work out, the water tribe warriors would spread rumors of the assassin traveling with the Avatar. One, to explain the fact that despite a girl being killed, there were still 5 people on the bison, and also to make people think twice about attacking them.
It protected all of them, but still...
This wasn't why she was doing it.
Zuko loved Y/N, not F/N. If F/N existed and Y/N didn't, he could move on. He could live his life without the pain, if everything in the war worked out. There were so many if's, but still. She could move on if he did. It was going to hurt.
"Hey, you're staring off into space again." Katara's voice snapped her back to the present. "Get inside, that storm is coming."
It was kind of funny, her new eyes.
They reflected exactly how she felt.
Hello, Author-Chan apologizes, I did say I would post in a week, but I know finals are happening for a lot of us students in these two weeks. This chapter has been ready for several days, but I chose not to post as to not distract from finishing this semester strong.
