Chapter 33: The Drill

"We can't catch a break, can we?" Y/N asked, watching the giant drill rumbling over to the towering walls of Ba Sing Se.

"No." Aang, Toph, Sokka, and Katara said all at the same time. They all stood on top of the wall, looking down at the approaching Fire Nation tanks and armies.

"Hey! What are you all doing at the outer wall?" A guard yelled, and several more followed.

"I'm the Avatar. I'm here to help." Aang introduced himself. "Can I talk to your leader?"

"I'm right here, General Sung." A man marched up, smiling down at them. "And we don't need you're help. Thank you for offering."

"Um..." Y/N looked at him closely, trying to assess his mental stability.

"Don't look at me like that, young lady!" The general said in a condescending voice. "If you didn't know, Ba Sing Se means 'impenetrable city' for a reason."

"What about the big metal drill coming towards the stone walls, General?" Y/N asked snappily.

"Don't worry, I sent down the Terra Team to take care of the bugs down there." General Sung waved dismissively down to the tanks and drill. The Gaang watched as two easily recognizable figures emerged from the tank, running towards the earthbenders.

Y/N could barely stifle a snort as Ty Lee and Mai took out the entire group in under 30 seconds. The General's face went white, and he began screaming.

"WE'RE ALL DOOMED!" He began running in circles.

"Get a hold of yourself!" Sokka smacked the General across the face, and he composed himself.

          "Sorry." He whimpered.

"Need our help now?" Y/N asked. He nodded vigorously, and she rolled her eyes.

                             —|➖◾️➖|—

"I always wanted my life to be a but more interesting, but I will say, I'm starting to get sick of charging into battle." Y/N commented, running alongside the Gaang in a dust cloud to conceal their presence.

"Yea yea, Adrenaline Junkie. Everyone in." Toph ordered, opening up a tunnel in the ground. Everyone jumped in, and she closed the entrance behind them, plunging them into pitch darkness.

"It's too dark, I can't see a thing!" Sokka complained.

"Oh no! What a nightmare!" Toph said sarcastically.

          "...sorry."

                             —|➖◾️➖|—

Once inside, stealing the schematics of the machine from an engineer was easy enough. Y/N had no clue what she was doing, simply following Sokka.

"Ok, so we just need to cut the braces that connect this inner mechanism here, which should be..." he ran through a few more hallways, then stopped to point up at the high ceiling. "There! You guys need to cut that brace first."

Aang leapt up, taking Katara with him. They began passing Katara's small amount of water from her pouch back and forth, slicing at the metal.

"Y/N!" Sokka called from below. "The others are over there!" He pointed to some other braces, and Y/N started making her way over to them, but stopped at Aang's voice.

"Y/N help us with this one!" He yelled, panting. "We're getting tired!" They had sawed about halfway through the brace. Y/N sighed in annoyance, shooing them away from the brace. She took the water from her containers, taking a deep breath to remember what she had practiced.

With a yell, she threw all of her water at the intact part of the brace, the terrible sound of metal ripping in half stinging her eardrums as large spikes of ice pierced the brace. She made the ice turn back to water, and boil, heating up the metal and catching the drops that fell.

She brought the water back to repeat the motion, the ice not making the metal screech horribly this time around because of the heated metal bending easier.

After hitting it one more time, the brace snapped in half, and the entire drill shuddered, stopping almost completely.

"I think that did it, let's get out of here!" Sokka yelled, but stopped as a voice came over the intercom.

"We have come into contact with the wall." The voice announced.

"Not good." Y/N said, also worn out from destroying the brace. "We still have a lot to go."

"Wait!" Aang realized, flying over to stand on another one. "We only need to destroy them halfway to weaken it, then I can deliver a final blow from the top!" Everyone agreed, and set to work, Aang and Katara on one, and Y/N on another.

By the second one, Y/N was exhausted, throwing the large spikes over and over. Then came the fire.

She just barely dodged the first barrage of blue fire, ducking behind the brace to shield herself. Aww, Azula giving me a head start. The brace was extremely hot from the continuous fire, and Y/N only had to give it one hard hit with five icicles to damage the brace enough for Aang.

"Time to leave!" Y/N called down to Sokka, putting the water back into her containers and using the steam in the air from damage done pipes to make herself an ice slide, sliding down on her boots, grabbing Sokka along the way, earning a terrified scream as Y/N surfed down her passage, Sokka flying around behind her.

They flew into a pipeline with Katara, all of them sliding down the weird sludge and out of the machine.

"Block it! Block it!" Y/N yelled at her sister, turning around to waterbend the sludge to stop comingour of the pipe. Ty Lee was visible on the other side, now trapped. "Sorry, hunny." Y/N smiled at Ty Lee as she had to swim up the pipe and back out the hatch to prevent herself from drowning.

Toph quickly joined them, earthbending the rocks in the slurry to build up more pressure in the pipe. They waited, hoping Aang could still do his job, but the yelling and roaring blue fire above wasn't very comforting.

A few more minutes, and Y/N began debating whether or not to go help Aang or not.

Just as she was about to leave to see what was happening, the pipes exploded, the entire drill breaking down and collapsing in on itself. The suddenly pressurized explosion of slurry threw her back several hundred feet, Y/N barely able to catch herself so her head didn't bash against the ground.

I think I'm getting better at not dying.
