Chapter 24: Respect

"Are you sure, Aang? I'm sure Bumi can handle himself." Y/N said nervously, helping Sokka get down into the sewer.

Omashu had fallen to the Fire Nation, leaving the team without a place to go. Sokka had suggested going somewhere else to search for an earthbending teacher, but Aang wanted to save his friend.

Which was understandable, but now Y/N stood in sewage water. The smell was less than pleasant.

"Let's just make this quick, yeah?" She prompted Aang as they waded through the tunnels. "We really shouldn't be there. We don't want the entire city waking up to try killing you."

"Yeah. It's past curfew, so we'll have to be sneaky." Katara whispered, waterbending a manhole cover open and gesturing for everyone to climb up. Aang easily leapt up, Katara and Y/N waterbent a quick platform to boost themselves, but Sokka slipped and fell into the gross water.

Y/N cringed as he climbed out, covered in glop and stumbling around. She and Katara waterbent the contents of a nearby rain barrel to wash him off, and Y/N dried his clothes.

"AGHH!" Sokka yelled. "THEY WON'T COME OFF!" Y/N slammed him against the nearest wall, clapping a hand over his mouth.

"Shut up! What do you not understand about being-" She cut off as she realized what was stuck to his face. "Holy crap they're adorable." Two purple pentapi stuck on either side of his face, looking at her curiously.

"You just have to rub their heads a little." Aang explained, scratching one's head, causing it to let go of Sokka's face. Sokka took off the other one as Y/N examined the strange marks it made.

"Hey, you there! You're breaking curfew!" The group jumped at the sound of Fire Nation soldiers yelling. They stayed still as the two soldiers approached.

"Young man, where did you get those blotches?" One asked, pointing at the weird marks on Sokka's face. Y/N glanced at the others.

          We're in trouble...

"Stand back!" Katara suddenly yelled. "My brother has a highly contagious and deadly disease called pentapox! Don't come close!" Y/N looked at her sister in disbelief as the soldiers panicked, running away.

"You're a genius, sometimes, know that?" She asked. Katara laughed.

                             —|➖◾️➖|—

"Wherever King Bumi is being held, it has to be all metal, so he can't earthbend." Sokka decided, looking up at the palace. They had quickly figured out walking the streets wasn't a good idea, so they traveled across the rooftops instead.

"Get down. People are coming." Y/N pulled her twin brother down as a group of people came into view. Three were simply guards, but the other two looked to be more highly ranked, the woman dressed like a governor, and the teenager possibly her daughter.

"It's so boring in Omashu." The teenager complained, her words drawn out. "Nothing ever happens here." She flicked at a strand of her black hair, most of it tied up into two buns.

"It might not be interesting for you, Mai, but plenty happens here."

Before Y/N could comprehend it happening, large boulders were hurtling down towards them, Aang barely airbending them out of the way so they wouldn't crush the governess.

"The resistance!" She cried. "Get them!" Immediately, the three guards and the girl Mai whipped their heads around towards Aang and the group.

"Heh. Run!" Y/N yelled as a knife flew over their heads. They turned and ran across the rooftops, the Fire Nation close behind.

"Agh!" Katara yelped as a small knife narrowly missed her ear.

"I'll meet back up with you guys soon!" Y/N yelled. Where are the knives coming from??  She turned around, bringing out the water from both her containers and jumping down from the roof, landing lightly in an alleyway. As she expected, the three guards leapt over her, while Mai jumped down to face her.

"Waterbender." Mai realized, taking a strange fighting stance.

"I have a name." Y/N smiled. "Y/N, a pleasure to meet you." She swooped into a low bow, grinning at Mai. There was no reaction. She's either very bored, or very tired.

"I don't care." Mai sighed, swinging an arm around, and before Y/N could process the three knives, they were sticking her to the wall behind her.

She's got them in her sleeves. She realized, barely managing to free herself before the next barrage came.

"A little rude, don't you think?" Y/N asked, narrowly dodging two knives and blocking another. "What was it? Mai?" She tried to confirm her name, but the girl didn't respond, swinging more knives at Y/N.

The knives were incredibly hard to dodge and keep track of in the dark. They were all sorts of shapes and sizes, and moved at different speeds. Y/N could barley keep up, she eventually surrounded herself in the water and froze it.

She could see Mai through the ice, several sharp points puncturing her shell. There was no way she could get out of this just on the defensive.

Y/N took a deep breath, waiting for the right time, then melting her shell, grabbing spheres of water and freezing them into small spikes. She whipped them around with a yell, sending hundreds of sharp icicles at Mai.

Mai didn't flinch as the sphere of ice exploded into flying shards. In fact, she barely blinked as she threw a fan of knives, shattering the icicles that would hit her and leaving the rest to fly by. Y/N's eyes widened as Mai threw more knives, pinning her to the wall by her clothing, this time very securely.

She hung there, breathing heavily as she stared. Mai relaxed her stance, tilting her head at her, unimpressed.

"That was the coolest thing I've seen in awhile." Y/N admitted with a tired laugh. She could've sworn she saw the tiniest of smiles cross Mai's features before disappearing again. She hung her head, struggling against the knives pinning her up on the wall as she stared at the ground.

"Boring." Mai drawled, walking forwards. "You'll face the proper punishment, yadda yadda. You could've at least made this fight more interesting."

"I respect you, Mai." Y/N looked up at the girl with a wide smirk, her eyes flashing. "That's why I'm sorry."

"For what?" Mai asked sarcastically, standing directly in front of her. Her eyes widened as the puddles of water around her suddenly wrapped around her ankles. The water immobilized her legs, and slammed her against the alleyway wall in less than a second.

Mai crumpled to the ground, a few stray knives slipping from her sleeves. Y/N pulled out the knives holding her up, freeing herself and picking up a few of the weapons, studying the amazing craftsmanship.

"For that." She smiled down at Mai's unconscious form.

She picked up more knives to study, sighing as she scanned the empty streets. Where did everyone go?

Then the street gave way beneath her, and with a small yelp she fell, the ground swallowing her up.
